Relax says Greg Westaway football is Golf

Post: # 576437Post supersaints »

Can we take this guy seriuosly ?
I think I know why we have not heard from Greg until now, he must be with Archie on the golf course every day....

"Westaway, who has former players Andrew Thompson and Nathan Burke as football directors, said he believed the players had to relax.

He likened football to golf.

"The harder you play, the harder you try, the worse you go. If you relax a little bit and take a deep breath . . . that's what I think they need to do," Westaway said.

"Just relax and let your natural ability come out, not be too intense about it.

I am starting to worry big time..... This is to a side that is showing no intensity of late, maybe Ross has hypnotised everbody? :? :?

As I have said elsewhere, maybe he and Kennett could hire some media bodyguards.

The analogy would be better placed if he meant that if you don't try to...

Hmm, no, that was a shocker Westy :P

Still, I like golf, and yes, I do try to belt the cover off it and yes, it gets me into trouble quite a bit.

there's more to golf than mindset.

there's a lot of technique involved as well as strategy.

if one is slightly off you can kiss your round goodbye.

to take the golfing analogy further atm not only are we down on confidence but our swing is stuffed and we have the yips.

If football is like golf, sack Lyon, get Blighty back and make Sam Fisher captain!

I reckon footy is like chess.

I like getting on the front foot and knocking over my opponant in glorious fashion. Waiting back and dithering while your opponant makes all the running and puts you under pressure...death.

I think his analogy is Ok.

However another reason president's shouldn't say anything. There is absolutely nothing to gain from a president saying squat.

A set shot at goal at training or in the park with your mates is a piece of cake. You relax, and just naturally aim to kick the ball between the two big white sticks (which incidentally are infact very far apart and quite a large target).

However, in match conditions when a thousand thoughts and emotions are going through a player's head - a set shot at goal is still one of the sports toughest skills.

Why?

Pretty much for the reasons Westaway stated. When you relax and simplify what you're doing it's really not that hard. When you 'over try' you tense up, second guess yourself and generally make errors. Remember the old adage of 'just go out and enjoy your footy'?

That's my spin on what he was getting at anyway.

Geez, some of the criticism here is pretty unfair.
I remember an article with Corey McKernan a few years back, at a time where he was overcoming a significant rough patch. He pointed out that his love for football and his desperation to play well, had really affected his performances. When he decided to take time away from football, and become a bit more relaxed, he was able to hit his straps again.

I think it's illustrates the point where you lose control of your abilities as you let your desperation takes control.

I would think that after the start to this season and the press we've had, that a number of players who had seen a premiership as 'a given' a few years ago would be placing a lot of pressure upon themselves.

so he said relax and don't overthink the situation>-- I agree- the guys seem to sometimes be thinking about the end result of the kick before they even look up- trying too hard to make sure it's ok-- they don't take the first option and trust that their teammamtes will be there.

Agreed with the fact that perceived external pressures can make your body and mind tense up when it should be flowing naturally.

Just like some players can come up and dominate in crunch games, some players also crumble under perceived pressure,

Would love to know what Tiger thinks of that comment!
I would love to see the stress that they go through in playoff holes!

Still not convinced he has anything to offer as President.

He's abandoning Moorabbin without a fight - against the best interests of StKilda members.
Rolled over to Demetriou and agreed to two extra teams - against the best interests of StKilda members.

And now this crap golf analogy and his "ten year" statement.
