Of course they do, that's why they're winning. It's why al the teams that are winning, are winning.St DAC wrote:Their bloody effort Rodger. You can say what you like about Collingwood, but they work hard all game. We don't, despite (IMO) having a class edge on them.
It's why they beat us last year, and again 2 weeks ago.
But what are you basing the 'self-motivated' part on? The coach's number 1 duty is to get the players' heads right.

Well, I guess we disagree on that. The coach sets the tone right enough, but IMO only you can motivate yourself to do your best. The coach can design and implement a gameplan, implore the players to work hard, provide valid reasons to do so, but only the player can get that effort out of himself.rodgerfox wrote:But what are you basing the 'self-motivated' part on? That's my view; obviously you think differently. So it goes ...

Teams aren't self motivating. Individuals are. Only you can choose how much effort you'll put into an activity. You can learn the behaviour I suspect.JeffDunne wrote:If teams are self-motivated as you suggest, do you draft self-motivation or do you teach it?
Did Geelong decide to get tough on players and discipline before or after they realised their list was self-motivated?
Of course other factors can come into play, but that's the essence of my point.
In Geelong's case they appeared to make a collective commitment, and individually motivated themselves to stick meet that commitment.
I wish we would do the same.
Not sure if anyone heard Burkie on SEN a week or two ago talking about this very topic (I think he'd written an article on it).
In particular he was talking about some of the weird things coaches say to try and motivate players. Once example he used was from GT (TBH I was surprised there wasn't a 20 page thread on it).
I've never heard of any coach that expects his list to be made up of self motivated individuals. There's probably 10 players in the league that don't need help in this regard.

I would be a bit more optimistic JD and suggest there is more than 10 players whio are 'naturally' self motivated and will play well regardless of the coach, club politics or any other distractions.

Do we expect players to be self-motivated - well yes - but in most it needs to be taught - it's like expecting students to be self motivated -the best ones are - the rest need to be taught self motivational skills.
Teams know this - a few years back NY Yankees added a specialised motivational coach to their management (chad bohling). Research motivation in sports coaching - you'll soon learn it is a necessary requirement of a successful coach - to believe that motivation will naturally occur and that the problem of those players that aren't motivated lies solely with them is naive.
I would suggest collingwood are performing so well because malthouse is a natural motivator, (as is leigh matthews). The cats went through a process that also motivated the team as a whole. Grant Thomas was a good motivator. Ross Lyons obviously isn't!

Collingwood players are definitely not self-motivated.St DAC wrote:Collingwood players seem self-motivated. So does Hawthorn, Geelong, Bulldogs et al.
If a player cannot motivate himself to live his dream playing AFL footy then he needs a new job.
Malthouse - IMO the most under rated coach in the competition - is without peer in getting his team revved up to perform well in big games. Last Friday was just one of many examples of his ability to do this.
I don't reckon that Collingwood has had the quality of list to seriously contend for a flag in any season that Malthouse has coached them. Yet that have made two Grand Finals, and have progressed in the finals series on at least one occasion (I can't be bothered to go back and check how many times). I gave them no chance at the start of the season, and yet I now reckon they are a sneaky chance for the flag this year.
Malthouse is the classic example of the difference a first rate coach can make to a club. More so even than Williams and Mathews, because they had better lists with which to work IMO at Port and Brisbane.
Try imagining the difference a Malthouse would have made at Freo over the past few years. And try imagining how Collingwood would have gone with a Connolly or a Gary Ayres in charge.

I'm not a 'bitter' GT supporter, but f***, at least you felt like the players were desperate to play for him.
Half the time I reckon the players are sniggering at the huddles: "As if I'm taking instructions from a bloke with a drawl AND a lisp..."
ahh..players sniggering at 'lisping Lyon"...... ......you gotta love the back tracking now.....
