kosi at full forward

Post: # 573848Post bigcarl »

kosi's effort in kicking four goals was one of the few bright spots in an otherwise black day for st kilda.

he looked dangerous and the lions paid him the respect of always having a couple of guys on him.

i think he needs to be settled into ff and given time to make that position his own. today was an important first step.

He still didnt take a mark on the lead. He will be found out over a period of time at FF as you must be quick off the mark. You can only take so many pack marks a year.

Hey Plunger,
A goal from outside 50 after a mark on the chest sliding along the turf, ring any bells for you? The running bit before the mark, I think they calll that a lead.

kicked 4 and was easily our most effective forward. he's strong enough to hold his ground in a pack and not to be brushed aside like a rag doll.

riewoldt, on the other hand, should not have been out there. he is obviously not right and that shanked kick signified that he has no confidence in his knee or his kicking (one or the other).

for a forward he'd make a wonderful winger :? or even a chb

Yep one mark on the lead and he is the next Tony Lockett. Of course he will take the occasional mark on the lead but he isnt a FF.

in kosi's and roos defence its hard to lead when we play and deliver as we do.
just watchin kangas n dogs game, execution around ground and into forward line is awsome (under pressure) which makes the forwards look a ehole lot better. reminds me of the fast track attacking saints that once ruled the dome.

we both know there's only one tony lockett. the best player to have played the game (imo) doesn't come along too often.

but i thought kosi made a very reasonable fist of it and kicked four despite very limited opportunities and lousy delivery.

He shanked kick indicated he mis-kicked it (have a look at the replay and you will note that he watched the ball go onto his boot....that is not how to kick..).

His last shot on goal was perfect.

A 95% Roo is clearly better than a raw Allen, Charlie or Ferg.

For a forward...he makes marvellous forward.

The problem...or rather one of the problems ...today was the underperforming midfield.

Joey for example just "pumped" the ball into the forward line rather than passed it.

Banger was the only player that PASSED the ball to our forwards reliably and consistently.

agree with that. we were smashed around the ground and simply didn't get enough of the pill.

perhaps one answer would be to get our best player (riewoldt) more involved in the game in a running role (once his knee improves, of course).

i'll bet you he does ... if he is selected at ff and allowed to play the full game there.

what about a 4-man forward line ... riewoldt and dal santo across half forward; kosi and milne deep.

tell them they're not to leave the forward line and go traipsing all over the mcg chasing their opponents.

give them some space and chuck the rest on the ball with instructions to pump it in quickly and directly.

tbh i couldn't see a set-up like this failing given a half decent supply of forward 50s,

give it a go. it's time to take some risks.

He has to be coached by the right person.

Well I would certainly prefer Kosi's Cube.....to Riewoldt on the wing

You can't pot players for their leading when our midfielders are intent on drawing players to them rather than moving the ball quickly.

We have absolutely zero understanding between our midfielders and our forwards in terms of timing a lead.

It's simply another area where we are being poorly coached.

kosi's cube ... i like it. :)

wouldn't rule out roo to the wing at some stage but there's more than one way to skin a cat. we need a bit of lateral thought down there from the coaches.

would be one way to give our forwards a bit of space, which is half the battle. the other half is getting the pill in there.

Kosi sould be given the rest of the season at FF, providing our rucks hold up. Or we should bring Allen into the side, play him there and have Kosi in the Forward Pocket, Giving Roo a liscence to run wherever he likes.

also on kosi at ff and touched on in another thread is the fact that he seems to be screwed over by the umpires continually.

if it is a marking contest involving kosi the free kick invariably goes to the opposition.

umpires hate him, probably because he's a physical type who can use his strength to intimidate.

kosi needs to learn the art of taking a dive and milking the free kick.

perhaps fraser could give him a few pointers.

G-Train used to give a few away but get some as well. a talented comic actor with the gift of timing.

One of the reasons that I posted earlier in the year to play Kosi at CHF and not FF is how Kosi goes in one on one marking contests such as FF's often get in...
ie the wrestli/jostling mark.

Kosi has two big problems with this:

1/ He stupidly way too often puts his hand on his opponents back and gives away soft easy frees. This is stupid and clumsy..he needs to elimante it from his game. I commented on this several times in the past..and he is still doing it....as he did in this Lions game.

It is no accident that FB's so often get in front of Kosi...they know it is a high % play for them.

2/ Kosi is very prone to being nudged off the ball...something that many good full backs have the knack of doing.

Kosi is at his best when marking on the move...and reaching out. You need to kick the ball off to his side (ie on the opposite side to his opponent).

This is part of why I would play Roo at FF and Kosi at CHF....or between CHF and FF. though both can move around.

Agree whole heartedly carl.... Kosi was outstanding yesterday from limited opportunities, and really should have had 6 or 7 had things gone his way... (got screwed by the umps atleast twice)..

He is a naturally gifted footballer who will quickly learn the nuances of his new position, and will be a vastly improved FF in 12 months... Including marks on the lead..

Plugger66's constant remarks about him not being able to lead and not being a full forward are seriously getting to the point of dilusion.. He clearly took 2 marks on the lead yesterday, and given better delivery would have had 4...

FWIW i'd prefer a player who has natural contested marking ability being 'taught' how to lead than vica-versa... Kosi is our answer forward, but he needs support in the form of Roo, Allen, more output from Schnider etc...

Kosi kicking goals against hopeless defenders has never been an issue.

It's just that most club's don't have useless defenders.

He's our number one full forward and shouldn't play anywhere else.

i think they are probably interchangeable at chf and ff depending on the situation, but in the main i'd prefer kosi at ff and roo moving around.

for one thing it's a shame to waste a guy with roo's mobility and endurance in the most static position on the ground.

i suspect also that, with confidence, kosi is a better shot on goal, though neither is as reliable as you would like YET.

also i like a strong contested marking option deep because that, more than anything, encourages the team to attack the goals.

but back to my other suggestion, kosi's cube as you have dubbed it.

it would give us

a strong contested marking option (kosi)
one of the best mobile big men in the game (roo)
a creative and highly-skilled half forward (dal)
and
one of the best opportunist goal-sneaks in the game (milne)

having only the four of them in our forward line (and the others on the ball, starting at half back) would give us that most valuable commodity for forward ... space. i'd forgotten that less is often more when it comes to forward structure.

... of course it all relies on us getting the ball inside 50 often enough (quickly and directly) to kick a winning score.

the other thing i'd tell them to do is not to traipse all over telstra dome or the mcg worrying about what their opponent is doing, but to stay in the forward line waiting for a chance to kill the opposition on the rebound.

it's just the musings of a frustrated supporter, but it couldn't be worse than what we saw on the weekend.

and just encourage the rest of the team to pump it in there quickly and as often as they can.

It all depends how you play him...

I see asa super mobile FF...leads out...and then doubles back.

I can imagine sometimes that he takes off.....then stops..lerts the FB catch him...and then he doubles back to run ontoa high kick forward for him to gather and goal..

There are a number of good Full backs around....but Roos mobility wil stretch them. They would much prefer to play on Kosi.

kosi's strength and ability to take a contested mark will stretch a few, too. so it might depend a bit on the match-ups.

but what about the 4-man forward line idea, regardless of which plays where?
