Hayes, Harvey......Max THEN ..
The very sad thing about today is that it was the longest serving players at the Saints who were our best players.....which does not bode well for our future. Now yes Max had a few kicked on him..but geeze the ball was pumped to his opponents so often and so well that he did well to restrict the damage to what it was.
In their effort and their skills...they showed why they are a class above their team mates.
Everyone else was average at best...and poor to very poor.
Some like Birrs and Kosi get honourable mentions for being competitive.
Even Bally who earnt some good ball had some horrific skill errors. Sam had a quiet day too.
Joey was terrible his use of the ball and hardly ever put the ball to the advantage.
The reality is that we do not have much cream....and a lot of ordinary players on our list.
Of even greater concern if you look at Casey...that we probably only have Armo asa ray of sunshine asa "ready to play " player with upside.
Ferg may make it..but odds are not good. Ditto for Gwilt.
McEvoy. Allen and Steven I all like...but they are probably all a year away..
Raph is not up to it either....and X is AFL standard,,,,but is no star.
We don't have a lot of ready to play players.....and the ones there do not seem to be fully engaged by Lyon as our work rate is not good enough.
Effort by many is poor...and skills often even worse.
Though one question remains.....of why Hayes, Harvey and Max can try so hard in comparison to their team-mates?
The team will work harder in future games....but the sad reality is that too many of our players have not continued to imporve.
PS: I don't include Roo in the above as he would not have been 100%.

Spot on! If Armitage is ready now and McEvoy, Allen and Steven are a year away, then why not play all 4 of them for the remaining games and accelerate their development. Surely that's better in the long term that persisting with the likes of Blake, Fiora, Dempster, etc.

I think that this week has made me swing over to this view..Statsman wrote:Spot on! Too many other players are treading water.
Gets some games into Howard too...as his last two weeks have been better.
Need to make ahrd deciosons at the end of this year....and be in a position to make them.
Mini yes should get another cahnce to show if he has what it takes in the AFL....if not he goes too.
He should be told say that he is picked fot at least 3 weeks.

Mini has had plenty of chances over the last few years. It's perfectly clear already that he's a very good VFL player that isn't up to it at AFL level. No point persisting any further with him.

There is very very little trade bait on our list.Juggernaut wrote:agreed 100%
but whats going to happen at the end of the year when in all likelyhood banger and max have retired.
There all tradebait in my opinion
The market for poorly skilled, slow or one-dimensional players is not great.

It's pretty pointless to single out individuals when the whole team plays like crap. Why have our best ('the top end') started to resemble second rate VFL players That's a better question

My point is that we have in fact not developed a new top end.mischa wrote: It's pretty pointless to single out individuals when the whole team plays like crap. Why have our best ('the top end') started to resemble second rate VFL players That's a better question
Ignoring Roo who is,,,,but who would not have been 100%....
Dal...by and large good teams can limit him. He is avery good player...but the not the elite we imagine him to be.
Sam...I will give the benefit of the doubt to today.....as I believe he is one of our few very good players.
Ball...is getting better, but his disposal is still not as good as it needs to be for an elite player.
Joey...does not hurt opposition enough with his disposal...
Gram......defensively poor...is a liability in the backline as teams isolate now.
Kosi.....is now a good honest big man....poor as a ruckman and ok asa key forward.
