With all the heat being on Ross Lyon, I'd like to pose the question....

What about his boss?


In the world of 'modern footy departments', it seems to me that it's simply a way for no one to be accountable anymore.


We have injuries as bad as ever.

We've recruited rejects.

Our game plan is hideous.


There's alot of heat on Lyon, but what about the boss? What about the guy that runs the whole show?

What is Drain actually doing about the following....

Injuries?
Fade outs - fitness?
The coaches inability to get the players to listen to him?
Our recruiting of discards?


Apparaently in this modern, cutting edge world of Footy Managers and so on, the coach is there to coach. Not worry about the other stuff.

Although the coaching is clearly an issue, 'the other stuff' is a big issue.

In the opinion of the SS faithful, what has Drain brough to the table?


2 years on, has the brilliance of Rod Butterss and his 'modern footy dept' had any impact on the club in a positive sense?

From the above...there are only two soft tissue injuries at present...and one is a rookie.

The others are in the main impact injuries.....and not preventable. All they can do is get them back as qick as possible.


With hamstrings....my understanding is that once a player has had one, that they are alot more likely to have it re-occur. When you have had them several times you are even more likely. Misson tool over a list with many sufferers.

So from our previous long list of chronic hamstring sufferers we currently only have one out. ...with Eddy out with a calf injury.

Add to this that Ball is looking the best he has been for years.



Misson has not actually been at the club for that long a period.

From what I can see we have dramatically improved in our conditioning of players ina short period.

It will be interesting to see what the situation is once the players have been under Mison for overa full season.


To expect no soft tissue injuries is unrealistic.

Yes I would imagine that he would look after all in the football department in this respect.



Makes sense to have someone besides the coach do it. History would suggest that coach struggles with this aspect of leave records.

contracts
management of leave
staff monitoring (ie physios, doctors, trainers)
overview of equipment ect
media
Stuff like that I imagine but still only a guess.

I've asked some very valid questions.

Our club is in trouble on-field - for the second straight year. I think most supporters would be very interested to see what the people in charge are doing, what they are meant to be doing and what they are accountable for.

If you don't know the answers, feel free to butt out and let somene who does know have an input.

I also started one called 'Sack Lyon'. It wasn't about wanting Lyon sacked either.

Do you just read the headlines in the paper too?

I think we should sack 1 person at random from the club after every loss just to appease the angry people on this forum. That will get everyone on their toes. Further, we should sack RL and replace him with Genghis Khan. Now there was a hard task master.

Seriously though, injury management has clearly improved drastically, and exceptionally quickly so he is worth his cash for that alone. Our so called 'fade outs' have generally come in the second quarter so would likely have more to do with a lack of talent across the 22 (we had over a third of the team made up of rejects Friday after all) than fitness. Hell, we ran over the top of the Pies, fittest team in the league apparently, and just blew chances. Unfortunately, the recruiting of rejects goes hand in hand with the lack of player development that went on with the previous administration, as well as some awful trading decisions. If we had a plethora of young guys coming through I'm sure we wouldn't have required Gardiner, Dempster etc. But Springvale/Casey have been awful for many years now and St.Kilda players have barely featured in the best. The combination of better development and injury management have combined to see a vastly improved seconds this year, with many Saints guys pushing for senior selection. Of course, all this would be moot if Watts, Brooks and R Clarke were, say, Birchall, Sewell and and McGlynn. To get nothing out of 3 first rounds is a club killer and we are paying the price. RL and Drain have had to start from well back in the pack. In spite of this, we outplayed the Pies in most areas, are 4-4 and the sky is still up by the looks of it so maybe take a bex and a lie down.

After that there are only new recruits with history of hammy injuuries at their previous clubs
Schneider - Already missed weeks with a hammy
King - Missed weeks

Hammys have never been a problem for Raph. Mainly quads, hip flexors and calves.

Max has missed games this year...pretty sure it was a hammy
L.Fisher had the two big hamstring injuries in '04 and '05 (maybe a slight strain last year), but other than that has been fine. Only one regulation hamstring injury doesn't put him on the list.

You're chronic hamstring sufferers are X, Max and Schneider who have all missed games this year. Our injury list may not be as bad as a few years back, but most of the injury-prone players are still getting injured plenty. There hasn't been any improvement in that area.
