Very much in the Roger Head, Jeff Moran, Wayne Judson mould.
The fact that he won the B&F twice says more about the team that he was playing in at the time than him - a worthy winner for the Saints of '79 and '80.
Some great names there but i would also include Verdon Howell who was a superb high mark and a very skillful player on the ground who often would dash down the ground from the back line in much the same way as Trevor Barker. Robert Harvey must rate very high the way he has weaved in and out of packs without opposition players hardly ever able to lay a hand on him. throughout his amazing career
Skilled Saints that I have seen...ignoring those of recent years such as Aussie with his kicking on...
Barker for his high marking. As a kid at South Melb once I saw him take mark of the year just in front of me when he off virtually no run up just stepped up into the sky....using an opponent fora ladder. barks took so many screamers that one could not keep track.
barks also for his fearless play...
Winmar.....for just about everything. Mr Silk....who was very exciting to watch too with dazzling high marks...and 70m torp goals...and who head to head with G Ablett Snr would lower his colors!!!
Ditterich for his hardness. Won the ruck by force of will....
Harvey for his jinking....is skill in running redefined a football era and which has now become more commonplace.
George Young....dazzling before he did his knee...and good full forward even after
Everitt...now hated by many.....but for his size had very good skills and as tap ruckmen there have been few better.
Marking...Buckets Loewe....and Pup Sarau who used to drag in bagfuls too.
Lockett....a complete footballer with amazing marking, kicking and ground skills and who could intimidate like no other. Best kick at goal I have ever seen.

had a lot of talent. i remember at moorabbin once when his right leg was injured he switched to left foot and kicked about five. no doubt plugger could have done the same, only better

Had to take a look at this thread to see if possibly the most skilled big man I've ever seen cracked it for a mention and glad to say he is not forgotten.
John Macintosh was a fantastic player. Saw him spin out of a pack and hit a leading forward with a left-foot stab pass. I was dumbfounded.
Still maintain he would have been a legend of the game except for his losy knees which restricted him to 54 (IIRC) games.

Looks like I was the only one to include Ross Oakley. He was another who was cut down by injury, 2nd semi against Collingwood in 1966, after just 62 games and never played again. He too could kick on both sides, could run like the wind and take a high mark.
Most of the football world only remembers him from his time a AFL supremo, usually not kindly.
But as a footballer he was top drawer, part of a great centre line of Oakley - Stewart - Read. In those days , the centre line plus Ruck and Rover were the onballers of today. Teams with great centre lines usually won the flag. How bitter it must have been for him to have missed out on St Kilda's one day in 69 years - now, of course, one day in 111 years - Oh dear!
A bit before my time, but I nominate the '66 premiership team -a mix of the incredibly talented, the hard workers, and the tough guys. They all played as a TEAM and nobody gave up.
An honourable mention to Harvs and Barks who would have fitted nicely into that team.
Apart from that, we have had far too many talented individuals who put themselves before the club when the going got tough, hence only one premiership.
my uncle used to talk about a guy in our 66 team named Travis Payze (dont really know much about him other then he died a few years ago ) and how he was his fav. player of the time . he also stoked when my father named me Travis (although im not named after him )

Not sure if the kicking style would have him represented in this thread!
Travis Payze was a reserve in the '66 GF, his first year at the Saints with only a handful of games at the time. He replaced Allan Davis, another first yearer with about 5 minutes to go. He took one mark and had one kick, but he played in a premiership. (Our other reserve did not get onto the field - Kevin Billing - and for many years was not officially included as part of the premiership team. Interchange was an act of desperation in those days).
As cowboy18 says, his kicking style was, well, cramped (he modelled himself on Kevin Rose), and he was slow. But, he made the best of his attributes of strength, endurance and tenacity and became a top ruck rover, selected to play for Victoria.
He became President of the Saints in 1987 with the arrival of Darrel Baldock as coach and remained until 1993. We could have won a flag in that time. Alas, just another could have.....
He was a great Saint.
