Jack Steven / Dangerfield (crows)
As everybody who saw footy classified last night or has been on BigFooty today will know there is a lot of buzz going out about young Dangerfield who Adelaide picked up with pick 10 in last years draft.
He chose to stay in Vic to complete his schooling before heading over to SA, apparently he has been playing brilliant in the TAC cup (14 touches in the first quarter and 8 goals for the match).
He plays for Geelong, the same team that has brought us the likes of Brown, Ablett, Hodge etc. and someone from their club (I'm assuming the coach) has said he's the best player he's seen go through there at that age (which means nothing).
The reason I bring this up is because everybody was talking about how Jack Steven was eligible to play in the U/18s this year, he was also a Geelong boy and IIRC he won their B&F last year which is a great effort, is he playing in the TAC cup or as a club have we decided that the VFL is more important?
I would be interested to see how he would go in the TAC cup compared to players coming up in this years draft, obviously he and Dangerfield should dominate due to already completing a pre-season with an AFL club but it would still be good to see.
I am really excited about Steven, more so than any other young player on our list (except Armo) because to me he seems to have what it takes, or is at least showing early signs, particularly his attitude.
If anybody who has been keeping close track of Steven could fill the rest of us in it would be greatly appreciated, I believe he kicked a few for Casey on the weekend but I'm not sure if that was the reserves or seniors. I would also be keen to hear opinions on whether he is an outside chance to debut this year, or whether we will have to wait until '09 or maybe even '10.

"Jack, in particular impressed, when despite being the target of oposition players, eventually had the last laugh when he didn't let it distract his own game and drilled 3 majors for the day."
Looks pretty light on, but has a crack and has footy smarts. Has played a ltle bit in the middle but mainly played up forward. Played round one in Case 2's but was BOG from memory i think.

He is 180cm......and seems to know how to kick a goal which is something we need.
I saw him in the SC after the Dons game and he looked sturdy enough for his age (which is 18 and a few days) and aftera nother pre-season should be solid enough fora midfielder.

That is very promising, a midfielder who can split the sticks is so vital these days and despite how the game changes it is one thing that is always handy.
How would 3 goals in the VFL seniors compare to 8 in the TAC cup, I'm not really sure how much of a difference there is between the two leagues, however having had a full pre-season over the other players would have given Dangerfield a huge advantage...

I liked what I saw in the NAB cup and posted at the time tht he reminded me of the Jones & Smith debut's in the Ansett Cup way back when.
This year will be a big one for him learning how to play against men .. no doubt he will tire as the year goes on.
However, I agree - the kid looks the good.

WHat you can say that whilst playing in the VFL, Steven will be pitted against much bigger and more mature bodies thatn in the TAC. I would also think that the VFL comp is a higher standard than the TAC.

when miles comes back from injury replace gilbert with Miles, in a few years sam fisher will be on the interchange. gilbert to replace sam.saintsRrising wrote:You could imagine in a few years time the team looking like:

Sam Goose Gram
Schneider Armo Joey

McEvoy Hayes Ball

I don't know about that, everything I heard was that he was bottom age in last years draft and had he not been picked, he would have gone top 10 in this years draft - So essentially he was a steal. I quite like the fact that Dangerfield is grabbing all the headlines, meanwhile our Jack is getting harder, tougher experience in the VFL without all the attention.saintly wrote:and people were crying out in horror when the saints picked him in the draft.
it just goes to show, even now, that it takes time to see if a draft prospect is worthwhile or not.

Miles...if the Saints site is accurate even though he played FB in the WAFL (where he also played midfield) I think he would be too small for FB. As a rookie I would have hopes that with his lightning pace that he could become a running HB or linking midfielder.saintly wrote:

Sam is not yet 26..so in a few years I would see him still very much in his prime and quite possibly rated then asa our best and star defender.

.
I thought the consensus was that he wasa good underage pick up...with only one or two canning his selection??
The 3 round selections were:
3 35 Western Bulldogs Sam Reid Western Bulldogs 0
3 36 Carlton Steven Browne Carlton 0
3 37 North Melbourne Scott Thompson North Melbourne 1
3 38 Adelaide Myke Cook Adelaide 0
3 39 Father/Son Essendon Darcy Daniher Essendon 0
3 40 Fremantle Christopher Mayne Fremantle 3
3 41 Brisbane James Polkinghorne Brisbane 0
3 42 St Kilda Jack Steven St Kilda 0
3 43 Western Bulldogs Easton Wood Western Bulldogs 0
3 44 Geelong Scott Simpson Geelong 0
3 45 Hawthorn Stuart Dew Hawthorn 2
3 46 Carlton Dennis Armfield Carlton 0
3 47 Collingwood Tobias Thoolen Collingwood 0
3 48 Western Bulldogs Jarrad Boumann Western Bulldogs 0
3 49 Port Adelaide Mitchell Farmer Port Adelaide 0
3 50 Geelong Dan McKenna Geelong
Howard the year before created a lot of debate about where he was taken. The biggest critic was St Mart...and time has proven him correct I would think. Though Howard may still make it....his price was too high.
Eljay this year did as well, but given where he was taken I think very few possible had any real issues with it.
MCEvoy had some baracking for other picks.....but again I do not think anyone was upset about us taking him.

I'm assuming that Steven played with Dangerfield last year and hence beat him in the B&F which is a great yard stick.
Yet, is it know whether Steven played representation football? It is not unusual for the best players within teams not to win the B&F. Especially when certain players are certain draftees (which Dangerfield would have been) and the teams/coaches advertise and allow for more opportunity the guys that are borderline selections.
I haven't seen much of Steven though.
Did someone suggest last year that he would have gone top 15/10 this year if he had stayed another year in thh 18's????????

Like many when Steven had his named called I knew little about him.
But on reading up on him and listening to the comments made about him......one of the comments made (and I can't remember by whom) was that one.

Lifted from WOM.
Pick No 42 Jack Steven Geelong Falcons 180cm, 76.4kg, DOB: 28/03/90 (med midf/fwd)
Jack Steven from Lorne played 15 games for the Falcons in 2007, averaging 20 possessions a game and kicking 17 goals. Jack is a competitive medium midfielder/forward who is able to win his own ball in a contested situation and won the Geelong Falcons Best and Fairest award and displayed consistent footy in the TAC Cup. Jack has just completed year 11.
Comments:
Ross Lyon said that Jack's quick (three seconds for 20 metres and 14.5 beep test) and is one year out of Lorne, is bottom age and won the best and fairest at the Geelong Falcons. A real competitor.
John Peake said that Jack is tough, and hardened-up with good endurance, not bad speed, who likens a bit to Paul Chapman.
Matt Burgan said that the Saints had to take him at pick 42 because Collingwood (pick 47) were eager.

I like the look of Jack Steven. Alot.
Very impressed that he managed to win the Geelong U/18 B&F as a bottom-age player... Also handy that he is a midfielder who (albeit in a lesser competition) kicked just under a goal a game. We need two or three midfielders like that!! Is hard at the contest as well.
Hopefully can become a super player for us!! I have high hopes for Stevo.

Precisely, if we got Allen at 27 and Howard at 59, I think we'd be relatively pleased. Allen was a steal at 59, and whilst we paid over the mark for Howard, I think we still came out of that draft quite well.
I'd still have Armitage at 9.
As for the '07 draft, time will tell. The recruting and development staff realised that whoever we recruit won't be able to play many AFL games this year due to a large number of senior and experienced players being on the list, so went with the more promising bottom age players with the view of them coming on a year later than the rest of this draft.
McEvoy was a good pick, and I believe he will figure in our ruck division for years to come. We still need one good young ruckman and I don't believe Van Rheenen is up to it at this stage.
