it also robbed us of kosi forward and i counted four or five times when we kicked to riewoldt, the ball spilled to the ground and it was carried away for a goal to essendon.Saintschampions08 wrote:A key point in the Essendon game was when King went off, we got killed in the ruck, and Essendon started being a lot more competitive in the centre.

Huge dilemma this week in the ruck.
Assuming Gardiner is no chance, I'd resist the temptation to rush Rix into the team and go with a more mobile ruck division. We've gotto do something different against Lade and Brogan and exploit them with pace around the ground.
Blake to ruck against Brogan at all times (and run off). Kosi to go head to head with Lade. In Port's forward 50 always 2nd man up to stop Lade's set play domination (usually with S Burgoyne).
Throw in a couple of extra mid-fielders to ensure we run out the game and use heaps of rotations to run them off their legs. (Baker, Birss, Geary back in)
As long as we've got their key forwards covered (Tredrea v Goose, Westhoff v Max, Fisher v Motlop, BJ v Ebert), we can win this with speed and endurance.
Riewoldt to be given license inside 50. Charlie Gardiner to hit up on the lead. All remaining forwards are crumbers / mids. Milne, X, Ball, CJ.
Mids - Dal, Hayes, Joey, Harvs, Armo, Bakes, Grammy, Birss, Dempster, Geary
Still no room for Gehrig.
Ins - Bakes, Geary, Birss,
Out - King, Gilbo, L Fisher (unlucky)

We need someone to take Lade when resting forward. For this reason I think Lyon will bring Rix in. Dempster is too weak...BJ could be an option but I'd rather not have him stuck in the goal square.SB10 wrote:As long as we've got their key forwards covered (Tredrea v Goose, Westhoff v Max, Fisher v Motlop, BJ v Ebert), we can win this with speed and endurance.
My preference (assuming Schneider and Gards are out)
OUT: King, Gilbert, Jones
IN: Gehrig, Geary, Baker
B: S.Fisher, Hudghton, L.Fisher
HB: Gram, Maguire, Goddard
C: Baker, Hayes, Montagna
HF: C.Gardiner, Riewoldt, X.Clarke
F: Milne, Gehrig, Armitage
Foll: Koschitzke, Ball, Dal Santo
Int: Blake, Harvey, Geary, Dempster
My guess
OUT: King, Gilbert
IN: Rix, Baker

I've told you a million times, don't exaggerate!saint66au wrote: For the 500th time in the last 24 hours...Mini is now a rookie listed player and cannot play seniors without another player being put on the Long Term Injury list :-0
The question is then, with Sammy out for ten, why isn't he on the LTIL or perhaps it will happen this week if we are just patient?

whilst our ruck stocks will be down unless Gardy comes up, losing Gilbert for Bakes is a massive plus for us.......in reality, Gilbert was likely to be dropped anyway for Bakes IMO due to poor form...bit of bugger he's got an 8 weeker injury though!
So....our defence should be stronger which may help offset our rucking loss a bit.

from the discussion neitz had on F C tonight it would seem that it is 8 weeks- he has given himself 8 weeks to see if his body can recover and cope with football- then will stay around the clubOtiman wrote:What is the minimum time out for the Long term injury list?
sammy they have rated as 6-8 so would assume they will bebhoping for the 6 week rather than the 8- no strong reason to LTI
as it was in the last CBA
Clause 25: Long-term injury list
25.2: 31st July deadline for placing Player on long-term injury list amended. Clubs are unable to transfer an
injured Player to or from the long-term injury list after round 18 of home and away matches. Players on long-term injury list ineligible to play for minimum of eight weeks.

And as you say....the huge concern is the ruck....and what we do about it...
The GT tactic (given his ruck stocks which we may well have for this game) is to "compete" at the bounces and try and make up for it by gaining more of the ball witha monbile ruck in Blake or Kosi.
Blake did do this in one stunning game in Tassie where he cleaned up sandlinads. however most other times his poor disposal has failed to do it.
Kosi can hurt the opposition around the game...but has not been in that type of form recently. Maybe Ross needs to give Kosi this challenge...that he needs to dominate the game asa fllower. He can float back with Lade if he goes forward...and is more mobile than Lade.
We will lose the taps....but Kosi if he applies himself can hurt Port.
Another possibilty may be to have Rix contest bounces...but then have someone as BJ play as the follower....to really try and hurt Port with true extra midfield class.
Another option may be Charlie Gardiner who has the tank to run all over the ground.
Midfield Our midfield group has work hard in the last two weeks...and it will be extra vital that they do so againts PA if we do not have Gardi coming in.
Back to Port though
They do not have good options for full back. This neds to be exploited.
Which Saint Kilda player will exploit this the most....though watch out for Cornes damaging us at CHB.

Whether or not Rix is in, I'd be instructing Kosi to model his game against Port on the first half of last years WCE game.saintsRrising wrote:...SB10 wrote: Blake to ruck against Brogan at all times (and run off). Yes, it's important to get back on not allow free reign to Lade up forward... but at the same time, given that we've got 3 KPP in defense, I'd say the best way to beat him is to burn him at the other end, wher Port don't have the KPP.
zone off in front of Lade when Port have the ball and let Maguire or Fisher (Fisher is very good defensively these days on all but leading opponents... if we can get a man in front of his opponent, he rarely gets beaten), and push forward hard on the rebound. If we can get Lade to tighten up on Kosi, and play as a defender, we've got an edge.
I'd tackle Brogan the same way with Blake, idea being to create a situation where they've got both there ruckmen on the ground as often as possible to try and shut down the key forwards, and allowing the forward pressure game we saw against Essendon to create our goals.

if we are going to persist with aiming nearly attack at riewoldt then he should be played deep, as you suggest, and made accountable for putting a score on the board.SB10 wrote:Riewoldt to be given license inside 50. unfortunately, this means there's no real place for fraser unless they could somehow both play deep.
what you suggest might work, but it would look a hell of a lot better with kosi down there as a contested marking option.
unfortunately our hands are tied to an extent because if m. gardiner doesn't come up then kosi will have to ruck.

So, if Gilbo goes onto the LTI list, which should take some pressure off him coming back after 6 weeks, and gives him the full 8 to get his body right - who gets promoted?
Keeping in mind that we should ONLY promote rookies to play AFL games at a better standard than current listed players.
Mini - arguably 3 BOG performances in the VFL, but has had his chance at AFL level before.
Eddy - Showed good form in the NAB cup, young bloke coming through.
Miles - Injured
Chivers - Injured
Van Rheenen - Injured
Attard - Injured
Haretuku - Playing Scorps 2nd's.
