Patriotic Premiership gives Saints First Flag

Aug 13th 1940

St kilda have won the League’s first Patriotic one day carnival Premiership at the mcg

Beating Richmond by 24 points in the final. It’s the first flag won by St.Kilda who have yet to win a League Premiership. The match was played before a crowd of 30,000 and raised 3,500 pounds towards the war effort.

St. kilda were too strong for Richmond who missed injured Dyer in the ruck.

Final scores St. Kilda defeated Richmond 4.2 (26) to 0.2 (2)

We once had a much loved player who left St.Kilda to become the coach of another team.

This gentleman caught an infection from the dye from the new teams footy jumper. Unfortunately he died before he even coached a game.

What was his name and what was the team.?

Can you give me a clue? Was the other club a VFL club

Yes it was a VFL club and it is still here in the AFL today in its original format.

those 3 weren't actually finals. back then they would play 14 rounds and then have 3 group rounds as an extra little bit of the season before finals.
We more then likely finished last year in each of those seasons.

We didn't make the finals for the first time until 1907.

Yes it is quite tough but its actually an amazing story.

Clues.

It happened in the 1930's.

The player made the top 100 St.Kilda players of all time as per the book written by Russell Holmseby in 1995.

The Saints players name was Fred "Flops" Phillips and apparently he was a legend for the Saints and the fans favourite back in the early 1930's.

He was offered the playing/coach role at Hawthorn which at the time was only a very young club VFL wise.

As we know, Hawthorn have the most disgusting colours imaginable and they proved to be the downfall of poor old "Flops". He had a boil on his arm that became infected by the "Brown Dye" in the Hawthorn jumper.
He caught Septecaemia(sic) and actually died before the next season started.

He was buried with both the Hawthorn and St.Kilda colours draped over his coffin which I always thought was a bit rough as it was the filthy Hawthorn colours that killed him in the first place.

I can't believe this doesn't get mentioned much in history(was omitted from the 100 years of Football book). Hmmm, I hope its a true story.
