Trouble with chanting is that it can degenerate to be highly offensive. Tottenham are a case in point with versions of "one man went to mow" and "Tottenham are on their way to Wembley" aimed at Tottenham fans. This has been posted before and of course I loathe Tottenham but this is brilliant.......
Foul Language chants like "my old man said be a Tottenham fan" or "The ****** Tottenham Hotspur went to rome to see the pope" would probably get you chucked out of telstra dome too.
I think the nature of each individual game determines the amount of passion from the fans.
Soccer's advantage over AFL is that the lower scoring means both teams are a second away from going in front or drawing level so it's more on a knife edge, hence tension in the crowd = excitement. In a lot of AFL games, teams get blown away, more goals means more of a gap, too much caviar and it ceases to be special.
None the less i have enjoyed many a final a quarter, thats where the excitement lies if the scores are close.
Another point the AFL set up is very good over the Soccer A league at the moment. Soon as the A league expands to 16 clubs and there are say 4 or so clubs in melbourne, then i would consider going to the A leaugue. At the moment too few clubs and just Melbourne Victory. (i can't stand their fans) It need's teams that appeal to all of the Melbourne population.

we have 400 members, but only get given 200 seats each week.
"...If there has been one recurring theme through this whole shocking mess, it has been the misguided, inflated egos and their ill-judged determination to cling to long-standing old boy friendships. The bad advice that has guided the selfish and culpable James Hird has not only punctuated this saga but symbolised it..."

You dont need chants at the footy because there is action all time. Soccer needs them because most games are boring. I love it when they talk at about the atmophere at soccer but never the game. In footy we talk about the game which is exciting not the stupid atmophere.
