Sorry guys and mods. Please delete the below thread.

If you have all seen this pic already please delete and/or disregard. Absolute courage shown here and had me shuddering. That act alone would have inspired his 21 other team mates that much more.

Looks like contact to the head to me!

Can't believe commentators noted Mattner's bravery and suggested it wasn't even a free? Mattner had his body positioned to take the hit 5 yards out and was never making a play for the ball.

It was a good hit. I'm happy with the free. But brave?

Imagine if it was Baker on Judd? 5 weeks.......

Just saw this on On The Couch and couldn't believe my eyes. Surely it's not real?

It's not Photo - shopped - it's real.

Jones took the mark, Mattners eyes were nowhere near the ball on impact, and he was braced for a hit, not a mark.

Don't tell me it was play on please.

It was a mark to CJ, a free to CJ or a free and 50 with a report.

It was NOT play on.

That real photo shows two things...

1. It was a mark. Jones shows that he has the ball clutched tightly into his chest. The only reason that it comes loose and ends up on the ground is due to the contact by Mattner.

2. That it was a free kick for being too high.

I agree with Iceman, Mattner was lucky not to get a 50m penalty for that. Jones had eyes ONLY for the ball. Mattner, whilst courageous, did not.

True courage is knowing that you're going to get hit hard but still going on with the task anyway.

It's what GT always said...Everyone has to take their turn. That was CJ's turn. He took it, a goal resulted and the final margin was less than a kick.

How good was it being there?

We saw CJ running back - we saw him look up and see the oncoming player. We saw him keep going even though we all knew he was gonna get smashed.

And he did.

It was inspirational, even to all of us in the crowd, it was just great.

It was silent for a short time, ala Kosi, but then when he moved it became a wave of emotion.

I love this game.

That low life Carlscum Robert Walls said it was no free kick because Mattner was going for the ball  there was no head contact  ignores the fact that CJ took the mark  and then implies that the resulting goal kicked by Schneider should not have occured  with the implication that it was a charity and St Kilda did not deserve the win.

Put simply Robert Walls is a lying maggot.
He hates St Kilda more than any other team.
He has never forgotten a game against St Kilda at Princes Park where Jimmy O'Dea had avoided being tackled by him, Walls gave O'Dea a coat hanger as O'Dea ran past him.
O'Dea was carried off unconscious on a stretcher around the boundary.

Later in the day the pack went for a mark, Barry Lawrence's spoil was perfect.
Walls was carried off unconscious on a stretcher down the middle of the ground, delaying the game.
Oh how all the filth of Carlscum did not like it.
It was OK for their players to king hit there opponents out of the game but oh did they howl when it happened to one of their thugs.
Robert Walls has hated St Kilda ever since.
How dare a St Kilda player have the audacity to retaliate against his royal highness.

Yes I saw that in todays paper. Really gutsy mark, especially considering he knew what he was in for. Well done CJ.

Keep in your minds how fast both of those players are moving when the contact depicted in that picture occurs.

That HURTS.

Was fantastic being there and seeing his courage, I'm certain he knew he was going to be collected, but went for the mark anyway - that courage personified.

Will the AFL sight Mattner over the forceful, high contact? If the roles were reversed, I'm certain Jones would be in deep trouble.

I thought it was a great effort by Mattner. He gave himself every chance to mark the ball until he realised at the very last moment that Jones wasn't pulling out and would get there first.

If he hadn't protected himself it probably would have been a head clash which would have been worse for both players.

Mark / free kick? Yes

50m? I don't think so

Reportable? No way

that is absoloute courage.

shows how much he wants to be in the side and how little he thinks of himself over the team great stuff.

would earn anyones respect for that.

mattner didnt run through him or anything so well done by him so well done.

this is why we love this game, was a free/mark but no way was it a 50 or a report.

Was a little silly IMO looking up to see what was coming but didn't let the sight of mattner charging at him put off keeping his eyes on the ball. Awesome courage and hopefully this is his moment to step up.

Perhaps he was just checking to make sure it wasn't a team mate he was about to collide with Solar. Not so silly if that was the case.

Yep...Mattner got him with a very legal hip and shoulder I thought.

Barry Hall would have tried to put him in a wheelchair

If players show guts like Jones did; there's a good chance he'll be a good footballer. Didn't he come 3rd in the Sandover medal count a couple of years ago? If so, he has SOME talent. It's up to our training staff to add the polish to play AFL. He's raw but well worth persisting with IMO.

Almost sickening. But so couragesous. Well done CJ, you brought the crowd to its feet.
