exactly. his composure under extreme pressure is better than anyone else's in the team and possibly the competition.

he almost sealed it with a long goal in the last few minutes and next time he will kick it, imo.

reading some peoples comments on this thread just proves you can't please everyone.

Even when we win, you get people on here finding someone to pick on.
Its rather sad, espeically when the player in question had a fairly good game.

Hate to see what its going to be like when we lose, it will be a feeding frenze!

Yeah, I know, believe me I love the guy.
He has been our most consistent player over the past few years (except for maybe Roo) and he is a first class midfielder, however we can not protect players from criticism, especially constructive criticism, one of the things that has made Harvey such a good player is that he tries to improve himself at every opportunity, by identifying your weaknesses you can eliminate them from your game in the process making you a better player.

Just look at Ablett, he was a very good player up until last year, but he addressed his weaknesses and he has now become an elite player, this is the attitude I want all players at our club to have, I want them trying to see on what they can improve rather than resting on their laurels.

got hard tagged by kirk and was almost illegally tagged out of the game. Cream rises to the top when the game is there to be won and dal won it for us with some very impressive pick ups and kicks in that final quarter

this is true armooo and if dal wants to be as good as he can be you are right that there are areas in which he can improve.

a lot of the time it is horses for courses, though. for instance you wouldn't ask harvs to work on his contested marking. it's not his go and never will be.

also on dal, if i was RL i'd make sure each week that every st kilda player out there takes good note of who is tagging him.

they should all make it difficult as possible for the tag (within the rules, of course) because, freed up, dal is one of the most potent and creative attacking weapons in the game.

his use of the ball is second to none and his composure under pressure is as good as just about anyone i've seen

What exactly is Dal Santo being criticised for? He had a brilliant game last night. Won us plenty of ball and used it brilliantly. He was good in close and in space and beat his tag easily. If you're going to call him soft tell me where he shied away from a contest. It was a great start to the season for Dal, and Carlton will have to think long and hard about who his opponent will be next week.

I certainly did not refer to him as soft......

just pointed out a weakness that happened again last night.

Dal himself acknowledges he does not run enough sometimes when defensive play is required.

At least twice in last quarter IT WAS HIS TURN in back 50 to push and pick someone up.....he did not ...watched...still chose not to...and Sydney
used that player

When it is your turn you must go....

Yes he did play a good game as well but his biggest weakness still appeared.....

Yes he copped a heavy tag......pushes back into defensive 50 to help free up but when required MUST pick up and not give so much space....

Why do so many have a PROBLEM mentioning a known weakness....

Praise when praise warranted but also we must accept and acknowledge
a weakness....

What he does with that weakness from here on is the key......

He just got caught out a few times.......can not pick and choose at this level......

He is the most polished player we have by a long way.
He rarely turns the ball over, gets caught holding it or loses a one on one contest.

Like Spinner, I feel ashamed replying to this thread, but feel I have too...

True he may be

but also did not chase or man up when it was his turn in defensive 50 on a couple of occassions..

I just would have used a different words to the first post in this thread.

What is there to be ashamed about replying....... great that everyone sees his polish etc but also I think some just deny for denying sake his weakness...

as I have said think he could even be a more complete player......

Dal /coaches and varying media have acknowldged that.

Does all the attacking things but his defensive side of his game lacks when we don't have the ball. If you could add Clinton Jones' endeavor to Dals game he would be the perfect footballer.

I have no problem with balanced criticism. Too many people here will rip Dal Santo for allowing his opponent a touch without giving any credit for the many brilliant things he does each week. I didn't notice the incidents you're talking about in live play, but if I catch a replay this week, I'll keep an eye out for them. Either way, Dal Santo's play under pressure was brilliant last night and crucial in securing the win. He had to be awfully close to BOG last night.

Not sure if on replay...maybe out of tv angle

depends exactly where you are looking....directly at the play or looking for danger players or areas at the game.

but I am sure others would have seen St.k CS end last quarter....

If he dropped off his man and his opponent got the ball you'd think, at the very least, his opponent would show up on TV. You'd think somebody on the broadcast would pick up on it if Dal stopped working and just watched our opposition in attack. I haven't seen the TV coverage, but if he did something really bad, I'm sure it'll show up somewhere.

From where I sat at the ground, Dal had a brilliant game against tough opposition. Until I see something different, I'm going to stick by that.

Dal Santo had a brilliant final qtr last night, his skills were exceptional again but i have to agree with Chook23, the signs of him being lazy defensively were there again last night. I thought his first 3 qtrs were ordinary last night, he didn't seem to be working hard enough, but like a true champ he stepped up when it counted in the last.

I dont think anyone is picking on him, more so just pointing out a few flaws in his game that are separating him from becoming as good as the Judd, Ablett types.

Dal_Santos_Gal wrote:Bawhhhhhahaha, clearly someone was watching another game on this thread last night.

Dal played a serviceable game last night, he was not playing a true midfield roll and dropped back in defence even when the flood gate was not on.
NO one really stood out last night, you could say maybe only a couple did, as it was a very even contribution across the ground.

Dal was far from lazy, he was running backwards and forwards like every other player was last night in the tactic flood game that was played by both sides. Almost a lottery game in who would get the ball when you have 30+ players all within 50 from goal.
\
i actually thought he won ...or saved ...the game for us......was given bog by at least one newspaper this morning too......

I think the players needed to do what Geelong did a year ago with Garry Ablett Jr, tell him that his natural talent will be good enough for him to be known as a VERY good footballer, but a bit of hard work and he could be in the ELITE catergory up there with the likes of Judd. Dal Santo has got the ability to be one of the best players ever to wear the Red, White and Black but unfortunately he just doesn't put in the hard work. Saints hold on in gruelling contest

March 23, 2008

ST KILDA held on grimly to beat Sydney by two points in a grinding match at Telstra Dome.
A shot on the run by Swan Jarred Moore with less than two minutes left narrowly missed and the Saints then held out to win 6.15 (51) to 6.13 (49).

The highlight of the match was an outstanding moment of courage from Saints second-year player Clinton Jones in the third term, which led to a vital goal.

After Moore's behind, the Saints kicked in and were given a free kick on the half-back flank, with a 50m penalty ensuring they would close out the match.

A few minutes earlier, former Swan Adam Schneider had the mark in the middle of the ground, but took too long with his kick.

Sydney forward Barry Hall ran him down from behind and passed to Nick Davis, whose shot at goal did not make the distance.

Reflecting the dour nature of the match, the two sides took a combined total of just 12 contested marks and 213 uncontested grabs.

Saints key forwards Nick Riewoldt and Justin Koschitzke were the only multiple goalscorers with two apiece.

Nick Dal Santo was best for St Kilda and young Swans Kieren Jack was also very impressive.

The Saints beat the Swans at their own game early, “out-floodingâ€
