Expansion team names
while the afl wants to move into western sydney and of course the gold coast did you ever think what they would call the teams.
just in theory if the kangaroos dont go to the gold coast (im not saying they will btw) what will the gold coast team be called?
what would the western sydney team be called?
what would a tassie team be called?
this is just about opinion so no offensive comments please.

Yep definitely...The AFL would cash in on the 'Gold Coast' name.....No chance they will be called Southport, although they may originate from them...Will probably maintain a 'beachy' nickname, ie Sharks, SandStorm...something like that.ausfatcat wrote:I doubt they will be called the southport sharks. They will be the goldcoast ??????
North will either now cease to eist or merge but they wont move to the Gold Coast this has been made painfully clear.
Maybe they might call them the Goldcoast Yuppies and the South Sydney Girls
Western Sydney? No idea.
Re: Expansion team names
I am pretty sure this is no longer a theory, but a decision was made not to go to the goldcoast. Something about it being a leading headline for a week seems to ring a bell....saint edward wrote: just in theory if the kangaroos dont go to the gold coast (im not saying they will btw)

Although I can't speak with any authority in regards to Western Sydney; I can, after being involved with AFL footy on the Gold Coast for 15 years, offer some observations in regard to that market.
Whilst the Sharks are the biggest and most successful AFL club on the Gold Coast, they are certainly not the most popular.
There's a real Sharks vs Everyone else attitude amongst Gold Coast AFL supporters. They're the team everyone loves to hate and beat; and they're seen as arrogant mongrels by the reat of the Gold Coast clubs.
There is no doubt that Southport will play the major role in establishing a new team on the Gold Coast; but I don't believe taking on the Sharks name and colours would be a popular move with the locals.
Their club song is just a bastardised version of the Collingwood tune.
Whatever happens, a new Gold Coast team will have to have it's own unique identity in order to acheive maximum local support.
Maybe the could be called, 'The Gold Coast White Shoe Brigade', and their song could be, "We're in the Money"?
Having said all that, I couldn't give a stuff as to what the AFL has planned for the Gold Coast. I've supported the St. Kilda F.C all my life and there's nothing they can do to change that allegiance (and the vast majority of QLD-based Sainters would feel the same way)
About the only benefit a Gold Coast team gives me, is the chance to see my beloved Saints in one extra game each season.

what about the GC titans and the west sydney roosters?

The west sydney seagulls.. just because the AFL seem to like bird names...and i can tell I wont like this team already...seagulls therefore being a perfect name
Or the west sydney whales might be nicer.. not that whales have much to do with Sydney? Then again its just a name.

Depend on the colours.
Any GC team would need the support of Southport to survive, so the Gold Coast Sharks is a gimme.
Maybe Western Sydney could leech some support from one of the NRL teams, as unlikley as that sounds given the huff and puff coming from Gallop and co. Maybe West Sydney Panthers (for Penrith)?

Not officially, though. It was only that from media and supporters in the early days before teams made nicknames a priority (Richmond used to be refered to as The Wasps, for example).SaintBot wrote:stkilda at one stage were the seagullsmilney044 wrote:The west sydney seagulls.. just because the AFL seem to like bird names...and i can tell I wont like this team already...seagulls therefore being a perfect name

The only other name we've officially tried was the Panthers in the 1950's, which went down like a lead balloon, apparently.
