I agree with your opinion 100%, GO. Maybe you should have done the rankings.GrumpyOne wrote:Ill just stick with my own opinion.

The fact that Wanganeen or Farmer always top Nicky for best Indigenous footballer irks me as well, Nicky is clearly superior. And a damn nice bloke as well.

You are entitled to your opinion, but in mine, Matthews was the greatest and I happened to see both play in their prime, which still makes Sheahan a wanker.evertonfc wrote:I've got the same top three as Sheahan - in exactly the same order.
Carey is the greatest player of all time; I don't like the fact that scandal and what not has tarnished his memory.
He dominated for a decade; his eight year period from 1993-2000 was unlike anything the game has seen.
He is the only player I've 'feared' could kill us.
I'm happy with the rankings afforded to Lockett and Harvey - I just cannot believe Ablett was ranked at #4, and just as disappointed Dunstall cracked it at #5.
Also, Greg Williams ahead of Ian Stewart? Questionable.
But it's all just opinion. And Moccha, to call a bloke a wanker - on the basis of his opinion on football - is incredibly immature.
Another opportunity awaits!

dermie wrote:"Blokes like (Jason) Dunstall and (Tony) Lockett were supreme in their positions, but they were only there because they really couldn't play anywhere else," he said.
Dermie is fast losing it – sure Lockett played most of his career at full forward because he reigned supreme there but to say he couldn’t play in other position is a jucking foke.Mr Magic wrote: BTW, to Dermott (Harvey is a sad case) Brereton, I seem to recall "only 1 position" Tony Lockett winning a game for Victoria against SA when moved into the RUCK.
Many times Plugger switched into the Ruck after half time or 3 quarter time and turned the game in our favour. Quite a few times he switched to centre half forward and he actually started his career at centre half forward. He was by far the most amazing kick (set shot and general play) I have ever seen and one Peter Hudson also agrees.
The only real thing stopping Plugger playing further up the ground more often was his asthma - even then to say he couldn’t play any other position has me scratching my head.
The Devil makes work for idle hands!!!

if it were lockett versus carey, ablett or anyone else in a marking duel/test of strength i'd back lockett every time. was also a better kick for goal and had a better football brain.
he's underrated because he played much of his career in pretty ordinary sides (usually with two or three blokes on him) and often had to make the most of simply dreadful delivery.
probably won more games off his own boot than anyone else. i used to love watching him play even when he went to sydney where he became a property of the game.
simply an awesome champion

plugger got 3 brownlow votes playing in the ruck one game, in 87.
why play the one of hte greatest FF of all time in CHF ><
seriously though lehtal was the best.
could play any position in the ground, probably ruck too.
retired to the FF and dominated there as well.
With the exception of plugger no other player generated as much fear as lethal did in opposition sides, it was palpable (sadly even against saints players)
probably at the time only spud and barks had no fear of lethal, spud because he probably was one of hte few who could go toe to toe with lethal....and enjoy it, and barks because my memories of him are he had no focus for anything other than the football. (bit like reiwoldt in that too)

Well for one Winmar and probably Harvs. Would have Plugger as our best followed by Doc and Stewie and they would be in my top 10 for the last 40 years. Couldnt have big Carl in the top 50 in last 40 years even though loved watching him play.stinger wrote:plugger66 wrote:Only 5 Saints in the top 10.stinger wrote:plugger66 wrote:So you would have Winmar and Plugger in your top 10 you have seen. Judd didn't even make it on the shortlist.SENsaintsational wrote:Others like Len Thompson, Robert Flower, Chris Judd....close
Considering Robert Harvey is the only current player in the list is a testament to him. Everyone blows smoke up Judd's clacker, but it's good to see Sheahan hasn't succumbed to an easy choice on including him.
Harvey broke the mould in terms of what it takes to become a premier on-baller. Pure gut-running, deals with taggers in a fair way - he just burns them off til they're at the point of exhaustion.
Who of the modern day on-ballers could possibly possess the stamina that Banger has provided - don't forget he used to have to knack of doing extra running after training around the streets.
imo Judd will never be as good as Harvey - he may get close though.
And hell yes I am biased but I don't care!
FWIW my top 20
1. Leigh Matthews
2. Gary Ablett
3. Wayne Carey
4. Ted Whitten
5. Tony Lockett
6. Polly Farmer
7. John Nicholls
8. Peter Hudson
9. Dick Reynolds
10. Bobby Skilton
11. Ian Stewart
12. Haydn Bunton
13. Malcolm Blight
14. Robert Harvey
15. Darrel Baldock
16. Kevin Bartlett
17. Royce Hart
18. Kevin Murray
19. Alex Jesaulenko
20. Greg Williams

Did Mike Sheahan get the 10 greatest players right?
Yes. I agree with nearly all his choices.
12% (72 votes)
Close, but he's missed a handful who deserve to be top 10.
39% (232 votes)
No. I'd only have a couple of Mike's top 10 in my list.

don't agree.......winmar was pure magic....could play any position on the ground except maybe full back and in the ruck...even then...third man up he was brilliant...no one ever beat him...and he never played a bad game....well except for that one blemish against carscum and that little turd who baited him about his wife and kids.....play him at full forward and he could win the game for you....pity he wasn't playing now....surrounded by more class he would be close to the best going around.....
big carl made all the players walk tall......a ruckman who averaged 15-20 possessions a game....before his time...i will ignore your comments about banger....
