4 ACL's in 2 weeks

Post: # 523744Post Otiman »

There must be something wrong with the way players are treated in the off season, there have been 4 ACL injuries all season ending, all requiring a reconstruction.

Brown
Dick
Hasleby
Malceski

It's quite disappointing to see guys miss out on a full season, and I'll use this thread to give hope to Goddard and Attard for a speedy full recovery.

Eagle Brown struck down

February 25, 2008 The AFL's pre-season curse has now hit West Coast, with emerging key position player Mitch Brown needing a full knee reconstruction following Saturday's pre-season match against Collingwood.

On the same Albany outing that saw Magpies youngster Brad Dick ruled out for the year with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, Brown was found to have exactly the same injury.

A club statement said he would undergo surgery later this week.

"Brown hyper-extended his left knee during the third quarter of that game and his worst fears were realised upon visiting surgeons this afternoon," the statement said.

"He ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament and will undergo surgery on Friday."

Recruited from North Ballarat with the club's first selection (No.16) in the 2006 AFL draft, the injury comes at an unfortunate time for the 19-year-old, having emerged strongly in the Eagles' pre-season.

And Brown's injury, almost certain to have ended his season, is the latest in a rash of serious injuries to strike several clubs in a brutal start to 2008.

Fremantle onballer Paul Hasleby, Adelaide ruckman Rhett Biglands, Sydney defender Nick Malceski and young teammate Kristen Thornton have all needed surgeries, ruling them out for 2008.

Who is Brown?
Mitch Brown from WCE

....and there have actually been six, those listed above and Kristen Thornton from Sydney and Nathan Grima, NM rookie!

Not a good start to the season.

Further proof as to why the StKFC training department needs to be investigated - not good enough!!

There was panic in the glee club for the word had got around that the ghost of old Grong Grong was back in town.

If you count Beau McDonald, its actually eight. And then there's Nathan Ablett who's gone walkabout which means there are nine 2008 listed AFL players already that are unavailable.

Mitch Brown
Brad Dick
Paul Hasleby
Nick Malceski
Rhett Biglands
Kristen Thornton
Nathan Grima

I feel sorry for everyone of these players. Bad injury to have.

Malceski a chance to play in three months: Swans

A revolutionary operation has given Sydney defender Nick Malceksi the chance to play football again this year, as early as Round 8.

The 23-year-old suffered an anterior cruciate knee injury nine days ago, which would normally leave a player sidelined for an entire season, but Malceski underwent a ligament augmentation and reconstruction system (LARS) on Friday, whereby a ligament made of industrial-strength polyester fibres is used to replace the torn natural ligament – a process that has seen athletes return to action in 12 weeks.

The European-inspired surgery could see Malceski running in six weeks.

Swans’ medical staff are confident the surgery will work, despite a slight risk that Malceski could still miss a year if the rehabilitation is unsuccessful.

Just heard a replayed interview on SEN, from some guy who got a similar operation done Over 20 years ago and had no end of grief from it.

Biocompatible materials and coatings have come a LONG way since then, through about 3 generations of new technology, and the 4th (implanting protein sequences into the materials) is well on its way to being used in mainstream implants.

I don't believe the '3 months' thing, because he will need quite a bit more overall rehab, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him playing again before finals.

heard interviews this morning on the ' revolution' much will still depend on which ligament and how recovery goes, each is differant but it appears that its been revoluting for many years.

More likely just horrible luck rather than off season managment. This season already has been crazy but it probably balances out last year where there was only 2 in the season proper (and I think 2 in pre season - Thompson & Bradshaw).

I agree.

Dick was stiff.

How far down the rabbit hole do you really want to go?
