Armitage not too dissimilar to Luke Hodge

Obviously he has a long way to go to be as dominant as Hodge but there are some similarities in kicking style and body shape.

Anyone else noticed?

tbh i think armitages early form reminds me a bit of caydn beethams early form.

big build, strong, beautiful kick of the ball.

another player he reminds me a bit of goddard when he first came to st kilda, although armitage looks much stockier.

Was thinking exactly the same thing. Virtually identical body shape.

Anyone notice Eljay Connors moves very similar to NDS as well?

Comparing him to Beetham is frigging harsh. Beetham was a terrible kick (always tried to kick it way too hard and had very poor vision), had shocking lung capacity and was very fragile and uncompetitive. The only similarity is that they are both fairly powerful. Beetham was a freakish 15yo, looked like an adult Tim Watson, but got slowly worse. Goddard was and remains an outside player who can play third tall back or forward or move up to the wing. Main strengths are his kicking, vision and height for a running player. At this stage, Armitage is a fantastic inside player, a very good close in tackler and a reasonable kick at best. He couldn't go back or forward and is no good above his head. He needs to keep losing weight so he can win some easy possessions. He is actually most similar to Luke Ball at a similar age, but Ball was already fit and better overhead. Either way, Armitage will be a fixture in the Saints (or Gold Coast) midfield for a very long time.

Have to agree on this Armitage looks everybit a ready made AFL midfielder hard at it, finds the ball in close and has a penertrating left foot. The thing I like most about him is that hes in where the heat is and is earning his possesions. The comparison between him and Geary are laughable while Geary also has played well, his possesions have come a lot easier. Hes being eased in to AFL off a half back flank were you cant help but get the ball. Armitage will be part of our best 22 at the start of the season while Geary may struggle as hes in the mix with 5-6 others of a similar style.

Beautiful? He had a booming kick, but there was nothing beautiful about it. It was often off target and totally misguided.

I too have always thought that Armo has many of the same qualities of Luke Hodge. His running style, left foot kick and especially his attack on the ball and the man with the ball. I can't remember a player as young as him come in and tackle as well as this lad. We've got some good tackling players in this team but I think Armo is the best of the lot. When he tackles someone they stay tackled for a long while.

Spot on Eastern, we have a strong tackling unit at present. A lot of work over summer has obviously been done on the tackling aspect - use it as a weapon against teams that like to play on quickly (like the Cats!!). Especially around midfield and up in defence. Has been the most telling part of our 2 games thus far - ferocious at the man with the ball - pressure him relentlessly.

Yep like I said we have got a great tackling team, but in my opinion, Armo will be the best of them all.
When he gets the opposition the look like a truck just hit them.

they have been working with the storm coach on tackling over the pre-season......

Plus Jones while still rough on his disposal is also a brilliant tackler....made even more useful as he has the pace to catch guys who have had head starts.

So yes our tackling is looking up.....
