I think the backline and the midfield is the most crucial, the loose man in defence that takes lots of marks and runs the lines scores well in SC, hence the high prices of the likes of Chadwick Cornes, Milburn etc

Correct, but you have to choose a player who hopefully was a fully defensive player last year (and got lower stats, therefore cheaper priced) and moved to a more attacking/loose role this year.

Likewise pick players coming off quiet seasons, players in their second and third seasons, and players who are coming off injuries and had an uninterrupted preseason.
