Judd to captain Blues
Article from: Herald Sun

CHRIS Judd is the new captain of Carlton. The Blues have just announced his appointment, with Nick Stevens as his vice-captain.
"It's a pretty exciting time at the footy club and I'm looking forward to it," Judd said.
The game's most brilliant player, a high-profile recruit from West Coast Eagles, will replace the retired Lance Whitnall in the role.
Judd, 24, skippered previous club West Coast to the 2006 premiership and has been appointed Blues captain without playing a game for his new side.
But senior players indicated their support for the 2004 Brownlow Medallist to take on the role, and coach Brett Ratten said the club's match committee had plumped for Judd in what he called a "very difficult'' decision over Stevens.
"It's been a tough one for the match committee and it was pretty close,'' Ratten said.
"You reflect on what Chris has done as a captain already and it puts him just in front of Nick.''
Judd is recovering from off-season groin surgery but the club say they are confident he will be ready to play in round one against Richmond next month.
Judd was captain of the Eagles for two seasons and led the club to the 2006 AFL Premiership.
Since making his AFL debut for the Eagles against Collingwood in Round 2 of 2002, he has become one of the game's most decorated players.
Apart from a Brownlow Medal, he won the Norm Smith Medal in the 2005 Grand Final, the Eagles Best and Fairest and has twice been selected in the All Australian team.
The former Caulfield Grammar School pupil left the Eagles to return to Melbourne after the 2007 season and was the subject of a four-way battle between Collingwood, Melbourne, Essendon and Carlton before opting for the Blues"

You missed the point, Carlton have appointed as captain a player recently recruited from another club because they have no homegrown leaders at all...hence poor leadership development.....Bevan Shorluey wrote:Clearly. You missed the point also. He's the best player in the country, has captained a premiership team, and from all reports is a standout role model to his teammates. That would make him front-runner at probably about 12 clubs in the AFL.saintlee wrote:You missed the point, Carlton have appointed as captain a player recently recruited from another club because they have no homegrown leaders at all...hence poor leadership development.....Bevan Shorluey wrote:Clearly. The point is exactly that.
They have recruited/paid for a "captain".
Sad state of affairs.
No matter how much they spin it, there is no doubt there would be some very bitter boys at Carlton who saw themselves as the next captain.

you would think they'd give it to a long serving player who has been with the Blues thru thick and thin.....
All posters are equal, but some posters are more equal than others.

So what? Captaincy used to be a position you earned through hard work, loyalty and respect of your CURRENT CLUB.Bevan Shorluey wrote:You missed the point also. Judd has been at Carlton for a cup of coffee, just because he is a good player dosen't mean he deserves the captaincy. If Saints did that I'd be appalled.

Where do you work Dud? Do they hand out promotions/senior roles based on longevity, or to the best man for the job?

Bit like David Beckham coming straight in to captain the LA Galaxy, and only played 5 matches for them last season.
I think Judd is a great choice for Captain, however I do agree with the idea of a long-serving player should get priority. Judd is young and can captain later once he has settled in. Even though Stevens has only been there 3 or 4 years, I think he deserved it more than Judd, simply for the time already served at Carlton. I guess time will show whether this was a good move or not.

Totally different Kernahan had actually played for the team, he didn't come swanning over from Perth (media scrum in tow) on a massive contract.Bevan Shorluey wrote:I recall Carlton appointing a one season veteran to the captaincy, and in the process overlooking guys that had been at the club for years. And, IMHO that team was so good, I could have captained that team to a Flag.

I'd have given up Pick 3, 20, Kennedy and the capataincy to get Judd...an absolute steal.
I get the you've-got-to-earn-it thing, but he's one of the most switched on blokes in footy and has already captained a premiership winning team.
If that doesn't engender respect from your teammates, even new ones, very liitle will.
They lack natural leaders at Carlton and while it might be a controversial move, but I don't mind it.
Who else is qualified to lead them? Nobody. Good luck to him, he's a wonderful player to watch.

The flag bit wasn't really my point/prediction in this case, but thought it was a handy example.stinger wrote:Bevan Shorluey wrote:I recall Carlton appointing a one season veteran to the captaincy, and in the process overlooking guys that had been at the club for years. Good to see Carlscum reverting to form - with them it's always 'the best that you can buy!'Bevan Shorluey wrote:The_Dud wrote:but hes been at the club for 5 minutes, probably can't rememeber the names of all the boys yetBevan Shorluey wrote:You missed the point also. Why grow your own when you can always go out and buy what you need?
And the really sad thing is that this practice is generally accepted as normal behaviour by the Carlscum faithfull.
So along with the captaincy does Chri$$y get to keep Lance's brother and sister-in-law?
Oh, and BS, I would have thought that there are very few occasions in VFL/AFL history where a Club has gone out and bought itself a captain? Normally the player has to put in some 'service' with the Club to be given that honour. Well I suppose Chri$ has attended some press conferences for Carlscum so that is all he probably needed to do under his contract?

Fairly sure he's ok at footy as well as being a good leader. I reckon his footy ability might have even been Carlton's main motivation to trade for him. I could be wrong, but I doubt it. The fact that he's a great leader as well is a bonus. If Carlton had a great leader in the Captaincy role already I seriously doubt he'd have replaced them. But they didn't, and he was the obvious choice.
Everton, I totally agree re watching him play, I think he's the best bar one (#35). I have watched WCE games just to watch him play.
But it's the concept of the Boos going to the open market option of buying a captain rather than the traditional Aussie Rules method of someone doing their time with a club, gaining the respect and admiration of their peers at the club, the staff at the club, all those around them, and actually playing a season at least before they are elevated to the position of captain.
Yeah LA bought a captain in Becks. Again my point, I'd hate to see our game go that way. Just reinforces my own thoughts.
I would have thought a team like them would have had some respect for tradition, being one of the oldest and most successful clubs in the history of VFL/AFL.
I personally think it just shows them to be exactly who they are.
