They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.
Montagna has ball, but has a lot of Tiges around him. The toiges tae it away. But both Gardiner and King are there... and S. Fisher gets it. Back to King, back to Fisher. S. Milne in back pocket, goes to max Hudgton. He goes to Kosi. We are kickign short, to Montagna. Tempo football. To Allen through his fingers. Throw in at half forwrad. Tiges get it. Went through a number of hands, but now 55m out from Saints goal. Kicking to Lockett end. Steven King again dominates. Slams it to Montagna, Kosi almost gets it, but its already a point. It was a great try by Montagna.

Boundary throw in now. King, playing in front, to Dal Santo. Players pile on him.
score 70 to 105.
Saints work ball to boundary line. Tippendale tries to pinch it, Newman tries to break tackle, but Charlie gardiner does great, tackles, and gets ball, runs, bounces... brilliant goal. He has had a terrific night for teh Saints. 21 possessions. 1 goal 1.

King is donig really well, gets it out into forwrad line. Kosi has it. To Jones, to Birss. But he can't hand on. Free kick advantage... intercepted by harvey. Fumble by Gardiner.
McMahon turns it over... Eddie kicks, but into McMahon. Takes it into Richmonds half forward line. Cartlidge to hamlyn, squeezed kick out, drifts out for a behind.
Richo limps off field. Injured? Commentators don't know.
23 mins gone in final quarter

Fiora kicks to HF line. Foley gets crumb. Kick to Tippendale. Tuck gets it and does a throw... so Rix has it.
71 to 111 is score.
Rix kicks it high... target is gardiner. Doesn't get it. Pressure and ball is in contest. Whistle is gone again... called it back. Ball is in centre square now. Looks like ball will go to Tigers. Tippendale... time clock is ticking away.
Siren sounds...
We've won!!!!

Thanks "Markin"
Nothing like a win to make you feel warm and fuzzy.
From Markin's description we seem to have a more direct and aggressive game plan.
Looking forward to the season

I am still hurting from 71;
my gut churns thinking of 97;
2009 was agony,
2010a was a pleasure to watch only to be devastated by 2010 b.
It hurts barracking for the Saints

cannot complain...11 best team players beat a full strength 22
best of all gardi had a bit to say at the end...the boy is coming good...heaps of man love there
king looked bloody good though...there is a lot to like about the new duo plus kosi who was playing more a full forward role with fraser leading to the left...
and if charlie can keep that form going throughout a full year we have ourselves a good 3rd tall...the forwardline as another dimension and its a seemingly decent one
the kids showed a bit which is all you can ask...the second tiers showed grunt, attitude and fire...pircha in particular got pissed off a few times which was good to see

INTERVIEW WITH MONTAGNA POST GAME
Well, the one thing my comments haven't really piked up on has been the game of C. Jones. I heard his name often... I would like to hear from others how he did. People have often raised questions over his disposals, so I'd like to hear about that. But you know, he got a lot of the ball, and he also seemed to be a real presence. They commented a number of times that he had bulked up during the off-season. Which is good, considering he had such a badly broken collarbone last year.
-----
C. Gardiner 21 possessions 10 marks.
C. Jones 21 possessions. Played almost entire game.
L. Montagna 17 possessions 63 minutes
-------
important: INTERVIEW WITH MONTAGNA
"It's good to start with a win" he said. Attitude of boys" We spent a lot of time in the preseason working on our structures, and the pressure. That was really important without out best player tonight. The boys were super on pressure tonight, but that got us over the line. We really focused on turnovers too.
We've worked a lot on structures, and calls, and when you have 2 experienced ruckmen it really makes a difference.
(Young players did well question)
Those young guys are some of our fittest players. Geary, might be a spot for him with Baker out.
Jones, Miles and someone else mentioned favourably by Montagna.
Fraser more than happy to take a more back seat role this year.
Question about Raph Clarke: highly rated by players and staff key is consistency.
Question on Nick riewoldt: not too serious, just a little bit sore, still 5 -6 games to go. they just want to nurse him and be right for round 1.

I thought Montagna's comments post-game were interesting (especially re: young players, Geary taking Baker's place while out suspended) and also how they have been working on a bunch of new calls and structures, expecting to win more ruck contests. great stuff!

Thanks for the radio links Snakeman66.
Only came in at the end of the MMM commentary. Does anyone know if Aaron Hamill is a permanent member of their commentary team this year or was this a one off.
As I said, I only caught the end of their summary, which featured Aaron and Kosi lightheartedly having a go at each other.

just got in - some quick thoughts from seeing the game live
well balanced side despite the injuries
quality of the opposition wasn't great
dal santo - a class above anyone else out there, so much time and vision. he stands out like the proverbial at this time of the year
clinton jones - could be a useful player if he keeps this up
charlie gardner - worked hard all night, hungry and it paid off
kosi - did it all end to end, shame about his kicking
king - very handy pickup, composed
xavier & joey - both ready to take a big step up, we're looking well served with talented players in their mid 20s

agree apart from jb's endoresment...if we have a best 22 i dont see a place in it for himBatnoe wrote:Great watching Charlie Gardiner
Great pick up, i think he is that player that we need on the HFF,
Good to have some ruckmen, Clinton Jones, fantastic even with his kicking and disposal
Why dont people like Jason Blake- Courageous, always gives his all, worthy of playing AFL footy
