riewoldt tipped as sole leader: herald sun

ST KILDA forward Nick Riewoldt has declared he wants to captain the Saints. While last year's co-captain Luke Ball ruled himself out of the running, Riewoldt says he is committed to the leadership role.
The club is expected to make an announcement this week. Riewoldt as a stand-alone skipper is expected to be the preferred option over shared captaincy with last year's other co-captain Lenny Hayes.
"I relish the chance to lead," Riewoldt said.
"Sharing the job with Luke and Lenny was terrific. We all complement each other really well. It's definitely something that I thrive on.
"However the club wants to go, whether it's one or two captains, I'll support what's best for the club.
"If that was to come about (sole captain) I'd lead to the best of my ability. Same as I did last year and I'll do that this year.
"I'm here for St Kilda to win the premiership and that's all I'm focusing on."
Players voted on the leadership group during last week's community camp in Ballarat.
Former captain Aaron Hamill and former coach Grant Thomas are both adamant that Riewoldt should remain skipper.
Thomas said he was an outstanding candidate.
"You couldn't get a better example of work ethic, you couldn't get a better example of courage, you couldn't get a better example of consistency, you couldn't get a better example of performance under duress, you couldn't get a better example of adaptability and versatility," Thomas said.
Hamill said Riewoldt had all the qualities a leader needed.

is this like apolitical campaign- press releases
Hayes keen to keep a leadership role
While Luke Ball has decided to give up his role as St Kilda co-captain, Lenny Hayes is keen to maintain his leadership position with the Saints this season ... The 28-year-old midfielder is now one of the most experienced players at Moorabbin and said he had grown into the role of a mentor for younger players over the past two years. Hayes said he felt more comfortable in his role as leader now than at any previous time in his career. More Karen Lyon/RealFooty/10Feb08

Comments from Grant Thomas and Aaron Hamill are part of a feature piece on Nick Riewoldt in today's Herald Sun titled "Wanted - St Kilda Premiership".
Both Grant and Aaron discuss Nick's personality, work ethic etc. and Nick also has a bit to say.
Can't find a link on the Herald-Sun page at this stage.

Re: riewoldt tipped as sole leader: herald sun
Funny, I thought the sole captaincy was taken off a bloke who is the equal of all that, if not more, in Robert Harvey. I could be wrong though.bigcarl wrote:

IMO riewoldt is a star, and puts in 110% every game.
but i still see him as a little cry baby who hurt his arm.

If you think that he was crying out of pain you are just nuts, he cried about half an hour after breaking his collarbone, he would have been on pain killers it wouldn't have been that bad, if it was out of pain he would have went down to the rooms. Roo stayed out there to support his team, he knew he was going to cop it for being a sook but he didn't care because he put the club above himself.saintdooley wrote:IMO riewoldt is a star, and puts in 110% every game.

He was shattered at that point because this was supposed to be his year, the year he would lead St.Kilda to the holy grail, the year he would really put his mark on the game and it couldn't have gotten off to a worse start.
I don't know how you can look down on him for that, I love him for that, it shows he lives and breathes for the club, anybody who believes that Roo will go to the Gold Coast needs to rewatch that incident and they will see how Roo truly feels about the red, white and black....

hear hear armooo. i'll never forget how angry i was at a badly-injured riewoldt being mauled by those couple of brisbane dogs as he made his way off.Armoooo wrote:He was shattered at that point because this was supposed to be his year, the year he would lead St.Kilda to the holy grail, the year he would really put his mark on the game and it couldn't have gotten off to a worse start.
the fact that his captaincy year under the rotational system was largely wrecked by injury is one more bit of ammunition for him to lead us to the holy grail this year as sole captain.

I believe Riewoldt must be made captain.
He has matured enormously since 2005, primarily because his mentor got sacked.
It gave him a mental challenge, and he overcame it in the most spectacular of circumstances with his form in the second half of 2007.
He carried St Kilda to 9th.
That was leadership.
He is the face of the club, a superstar of the competition and the natural choice as our skipper IMO.

They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.

Disagree strongly matured primarily because his mentor got sacked......
Natural maturing with age along with a desire and want to lead .....
along with many other life experiences has helped him mature
the sacking ....part of the maturing process
opinions only by both of us though.

Ok Jethro, you've had your fun now just leave to save the mods from having to ban you...
Back on topic...
We really are in a great situation having so many great options to choose from...
Lenny - A proven leader and a source of on and off field inspiration.
Riewoldt - The face of the club, a man who leads by example.
Luke Ball - The epitome of the St.Kilda attitude (after Harvey)
Harvey - He's Harvey
S. Fisher - The general in the backline
N. Dal Santo - IMO the most underrated leader at our club, one of the most consistent and durable players I have ever seen, he often (especially in Lenny's absence) sets up the midfield plays, putting players in position and giving encouragement.
If I had to make the choice I would probably go with Roo as captain with Lenny and Dal as Vice Captains. Give Ball a year off to get his body right and fill out the leadership group with Justin Koschitzke, Sam Fisher, Fraser Gehrig and Robert Harvey.
