Brodie Atkinson
Taken with Pick 16 in the 1992 draft, there were big wraps on Brodie when he joined the club from Sturt.
On debut in 1993, aged 20, he picked up 25 touches and two Brownlow votes - a tremendous effort. A week later, he picked up 14 touches and played respectably against a Hawthorn outfit who pumped us.
He never played for St Kilda again and was delisted just a few months later.
In 1999, Adelaide threw him a lifeline after he again dominated the SANFL. He played five games before being cut, largely a result of injury.
However, I can't remember why he was delisted by us or why he was even dropped? Was it due to a bad attitude or go-home factor or something else altogether?
Do people have any memories of Brodie and what type of player he was?
Another in the what-if category...he clearly had some talent.

Speaking of Damen Shaw, and sorry for going off on a tangent but he was another very talented young player.B W and R all over wrote:That's right. He was an alright player. Probably some other factor there.
He also got a Rising Star nomination in that first game (which was also Damen Shaw's debut from memory)
Injuries cut him down too which was a real shame because he played some very good games for St.Kilda as a youngster between 1993 and 1996.
dont remember brodie that well outside the name.
damen shaw copped some knocks to the head and either he or someone purporting to be him claimed thats what ended his career.
was a geniune running talent, could tag, and get teh ball on his own. for those who are a bit younger, not as good but in a similar vein to aussie jones on his offensive abilities, and many of the talents that Baker brings to the club without the mean streak.
gave paul roos a bath one day. Tony Brown is another with similar abilities.

Great bloke too - no ego at all, gave his best and whilst not pretty, he tried his heart out. Genuinely loved playing for us. Respected that.HarveysDeciple wrote:Speaking of Damen Shaw, and sorry for going off on a tangent but he was another very talented young player.B W and R all over wrote:That's right. One of his best games for us was against Fitzroy in 1994 when we won by 13 points in a really tough and torrid affair, and he really stood up when it mattered. Picked up a Brownlow vote too from memory.
The tangent is perfectly acceptable, as I doubt a thread about an ex-player who played two games would kick onto a second page

just on Brodie though, it did seem a mystery.evertonfc wrote:Great bloke too - no ego at all, gave his best and whilst not pretty, he tried his heart out. Genuinely loved playing for us. Had a look at some of our stats from 1993 and it didn't make sense that a bloke who could play one great game and one solid game and then dissapear off the face of the earth without having suffered a major injury.
I would love to hear from someone in the know as to what happened there.
Hmmm wikipedia says he was dropped after two games,,and got the Rising Star nomination in his first game
Certainly no hint of injuries in his bio there...I'm SURE someone here has some inside goss hehee
Just on Damen Shaw ..did he not post here a few times 4-5 years ago?

I'm a Sturt member as well as a Saints member.
Brodie retired from SANFL footy after Sturt defeated Central in the 2002 GF. He went away and was a player/coach at Portland in SA's South East, & won a premiership in 2003.
Returned to be Reserves and Assistant coach in 2006. Now an assistant at Norwood for 2008.
Rumours over hear in SA say he just got homesick and didn't really want to commit to AFL footy.
He was drafted from North Adelaide, by St. Kilda, at no. 16 in the 1992 National Draft.
You maybe a Saints member and a Sturt member Sax, but you know nothing about geography.
Portland is in the south west of Victoria, not the south east of SA.
Sorry! My mistake! Western Border Football League is a Victoria/SA League. They played Sth Gambier (SA) in the GF, & won by about 4 goals.
