The way things turn out.

Post: # 497037Post karnak »

When Gehrig retired it freed up a large amount of room in the salary cap, enough in fact to relieve the Swans and Cats of some salary cap pressure.

Had Gehrig had stayed on we would not have been able to pick up either Schneider or King. Which were 2 of the type of players that we desperately need.

Then as it turns out Gehrig announces his come back and we pick him up for 57. Some people were annoyed that we would spend pick 57 on him, based on his age and seasons left etc. However; we need to keep in mind that really we spent pick 57 and about maybe 20-30% of what he was previously on financially.

In this entire process we've got a top 22 player for pick 57 and an absolute bargain, (we wouldnt' have got any value from a 57 pick for 2008 or 2009 you'd think)

So yes we've spent pick 57 that otherwise we would not have had to. So that can be construed as a negative, but what we've really done is get schneiderman and King into the list for pick 26 and 57, and Gehrig has kindly donated 70% of his salary to help the saints pay for the 2 new recruits.

I am a huge Gehrig fan and was disappointed when he retired, however; the way it has turned out has proved to be the best possible outcome for St Kilda.

Carn the Saints, I am pumped for 2008!

:P :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

fraser's "retirement" might be the best thing to have happened to the club in a while.

not only did it free up salary cap room it forced us to recruit a ruckman so kosi could play forward and forced us to think about recasting the forward line.

Yeah that is a really good point,

We've been forced to think out of the square which otherwise may not have happened.

With King/M.Gardiner on the scene and with the big G a one spot player, we may just find Kosi at CHB (which I called before G's selection even, not yet proven correct though)

Either way with setup though, I think we'll see all sorts in the forwardline, including S.Fisher and Maguire at points if other things arent' working. I see an awful lot of flexiblity being introduced helped with our new recruits.

Very exciting times.

i think it will be kosi chf, fraser ff, roo roaming forward and imo roo will chop them up if freed of the pressure of being the sole focal point of every attack.

as you say, exciting times ahead if we can get all our good players on the park for an extended period
