Curious question.Harvey related :P

Post: # 496390Post saintbrat »

Musing last evening and this morning as I realised that many that harves Played against are doing a myriad of activities.

Harves Started in 1988-
is there a record of who else started in 1988?
what are they doing now?
how long did they last in the game?

My first up search hasn't found a source :)

Brett BOWEY great rover
Jayson DANIELS great tackler and handballer
Mark DWYER very good midfielder
Gordon FODE good average player
Peter FREEMAN looked like a superstar in the reserves
Rodney GLADMAN don't remember him
Robert HARVEY no comment
Bob JONES Tasmanian aboriginal ruckman
Glenn MacMILLAN don't remember him
Ian MULLER Carlton reject
Sean SIMPSON went to Geelong and played well
Steve TURNER good average player

All started their VFL careers in 1988 along with Banger, and played for us.

IIRC Brett Bowey also debuted the same game as Harvs.........

Can't entirely remember when he finished up at the Saints and have no idea what he's doing now.

So I guess 1 out of those 3 answers isn't too bad!

Funny you say that.

I remember when I was a wee lad, I was down at training one night when Peter Hudson was assistant coach to Kenny.

He had to pull Jack aside about his handballing. He was explaing to him that when you handball, you don't just whack it with your fist and let it float through the air.

You need the ball to spin correctly (like a drop punt) so the bloke you're handballing it to to can catch it easily.

If it's floating like a helicopter, it can be difficult to receive.

I was about 13 at the time, and was perplexed that an AFL footballer had to be pulled aside at training to have this pointed out to him!

In hindsight, now I'm perplexed that none of his previous coaches had actually told him this!

A more mindblowing list would be a list of players who retired in 1988.

Rodney GLADMAN don't remember him
Ballarat Boy who never managed a senior match to memory. Went to Collingwood after Saints and played twos the back home to the Ballarat league I think. I worked out with him (gym) a couple of times, he was a hard worker and a gun at local level but just not VFL standard.

Ian MULLER Carlton reject
Knee problems hampered this guy, he could really play in his early years and was as tough as nails. Currently grows garpes and (I think makes wine) up in the Shepparton district. Married a gorgeous woman. Was a hit with the ladies at the Saints Disco as he was a bit of a Christopher Reeves lookalike.

No offence Enrico but I think you use the word great a little freely!

How did the draft and zoning work in conjunction?

I think zoning took precedence, ie Harvey was selected by St Kilda as he was withing their zone, this selections, and others like it, took place prior to the draft taking place.

I think this meant that the draft was for those players outside of the clubs zones and those overlooked, delisted or retired etc...
