State Gov.funding not guaranteed for Frankston

Post: # 495709Post BelfastSaint »

Sports minister James Merlino was on SEN just before Frasers press conference and made it clear that the funding which was promised for the proposed Moorabbin development would not automatically be transferred to the Frankston development.
I believe the sticking point is community facilities such as the new pool and sports center which would have been used by the locals at Moorabbin.
Unless they are satisfied that Frankstons proposal will benefit the local community in the same regard then the $3.45 million is in no way set in stone.
Further meetings with St Kilda and the Frankston council should bring a response from the government within the next 7-10 days according to Merlino.

I'd be pretty confident that the frankston proposal will be backed more so by the state government in terms of community benefit.

also heard the interview.. got the impression that it won't be an issue and his problem was more with the fact that it was reported as though it will be a direct transfer

I personally wouldn't hold any of that against him...He is on SEN frequently and comes across as quite amenable.
I am not into sending emails to politicians but as his email address is included in that link perhaps a forum member could send a well worded email asking him if the State Governmant intends to derail the Saints over the Frankston move and post his response (if any) here ...

I doubt that there would be any problems - his department has to (be seen) to ensure they are covered on all angles when handling Government money. The way I see it politicians always get every eye dotted on the legitimate funding programs so they only have to deal the the feedback from illegitimate funded ones.

James Merlino is a good bloke (despite barracking for Hawthorn).

There is no way that the State Govt money will disappear from the Frankston project - the Victorian State Govt logo was on the media release last week.

Not guaranteed but revised. Will need to justify community benefit as most of the facilities were for the club and less for the community than Moorabbin(Merlino mentioned this).
Also I would think the local member for Bentleigh will also want some money for Moorabbin to clean it up. I would think this would be from the same pool of funds.

That's sad dolphin boy.

It makes sense a councillor would come on this site because the state government monitors this site for what saints fans think and want.

Who are you? Jeff Kennett.

funding is locked in, guaranteed, a sure bet.

merlino just posturing by reminding people he is still a player in all this - he suffers from small man syndrome but is a pretty good bloke away from politics.
