Cuz, had great delight at drilling us with 50m piercing passes at training, one night he hit me on the chest and it nearly broke my ribs and pushed my lungs out of my back. He just laughed and when I caught up to him in the huddle I said you nearly killed me to which he replied " Plugger use to take them out in front Cuz''
When he kicked the ball it didnt vary in flight one bit and got to you so much quicker it was incredible. His wet weather skills were amazing. After every home game he would walk up and down the Yarra river anyone whos been up to Warburton in the middle of winter will appreciate how cold that would be.

Walked up and down the Yarra because he was looking for a feed for tea, and his car CURLY
Very funny but shy bloke, I always remember a time when we got his new mouth gaurd after a game mabey a couple of games into the season i handed it to him he threw it in his mouth then smiled at me and said watch me now CUZ i'm going in head first (and he did) he was happy in 2000 which is the best thing i can remember about him.
Great man and i hope he is at peace with the world where he is.
Trying to shoot ducks swimming near the banks of the Yarra over the Warby HWY from his balcony with his bow and arrow will never be the same without that outbust of a laugh from CUZ when you nearly got one (never did) but you could tell that he was ready to go and get it if you did and who knows what sort of meal he would of made with it

it was one of those marks where the player leaps twice ... once from the ground, then again from the shoulders or back of his opponent. sort of a springboard effect. an unforgettable moment.
I am pretty sure the mark you are referring was against Richmond. And the player he leaped on was David Palm...
Best mark I have ever seen. There is only one picture I know of that exists of him taking that mark.

I was there that day, I'm pretty sure it was against Hawthorn and was Pluggers 100th game. We led all day and Brereton knocked out Danny Frawley and we ended up losing by a very small margin. That day and the time we lost to Collingwood by 1 point when Daicos got the softest free you would ever see really stand out it my mind. Winmar was a star, absolute genius of a footballer!

correct. david palm. june 1988. he was in the stratosphere
Very nice story with a young boy in our supporters group back in about 94 or 95 who was terminally ill.
His hero was Nicky, and this boys family contacted the club and asked if he could spend some time in the rooms before a game.
The club obliged and Winmar was fantastic. Took him by the hand and showed him around the rooms, introduced him to everyone, then held his hand as they ran out onto the ground.
A lovely touch that brought a huge smile to this child's face.

An article in the Herald Sun today "The Pulse" with Steve Perkin (page 107 in our Tassie edition) read -
We haven't heard from former Saint & Western Bulldog Nicky Winmar recently. Rumour has it he's working on a property in Alberton, Western Australia, shearing sheep.
Did they pay you for your info mate?
St Kilda's 2 premiership captains are Tassie born. The Doc & Roo.

Sounds like the one he took over Hamilton and Walsh V Essendon at Moorabbin about '87.
Best mark I have ever seen along with Barks over Ricky Quaid at the lakeside oval.

Proudly assuming the title of forum Oracle and serving as the inaugural Saintsational ‘weak as piss brigade’ President.
There is video footage of the "Palm" mark.
But it is poor, and misses the critical high point of his sideways leap.
Have never seen any footage/photo of the Essendon mark.
It would be fantastic is someone has access to a still of those marks if they could publish it.
Two of the "high" points of the 80's.
Agree with prev comments that Elvis was as near as you can get to the perfect footballer
- brilliant ground skills
- brilliant disposal
- brilliant long kicker
- brilliant athleticism
- brilliant reflexes
- brilliant tackling
- brilliant pace
- brilliant in the wet
- brilliant leaping mark
- brilliant anticipation
- brilliant versatility
Only (relative) weaknesses were
- his consistency (sometimes went missing)
- his goalkicking (missed a few he should have nailed)
- he was often sucked in/provoked by racist taunts (Brereton / Shaw etc.)
- not strong enough to take a pack mark (but his lithe athleticism allowed him to do so much more).
He literally could be played in every position on the field except for Ruck (and he even had a few tap outs there) !
A delight to watch.
I have two personal memories of Nicky
One was at a StK B&F at the end of the season when he copped 10 weeks for "retaliating" against Brereton who had vilified him and had him in a headlock.
Nicky personally went around the room and shook the hand of everyone at every table, as though apologising for letting us down.
A great gesture from a shy man.
Years later we once hosted an aboriginal boy down from the Tiwi Islands for a schoolboy carnival.
Took him to training at Moorabbin and asked an official if he could meet Nicky at the end.
Went into the rooms after and Nicky spoke with him for about 10 minutes.
Very friendly and generous with his time.
Can't speak highly enough of him.
Just such a shame that he has nothing to show financially.
Perhaps Peter Jess who was so quick to try and screw the Club and extort and exorbitant salary for him, could have actually done something useful and helped him to buy some long term assets.
Useless ponytailed prick !
