Post: # 491455Post rogerwa »

at a friends place last night for a bbq....made my stomach churn to see him with his bloody geelong premiers cap & shirt on

to make matters worse those present were geelong,w/coast & swines...naturally they starting talking about their FLAGS....i just drifted off into a dark little corner & sat all alone crying over the fact we dont have one

i've had enough....I WANT A BLOODY FLAG TOO

A sad and inexcusable disregard for history. You should get a job with the AFL--you'll fit right in. They also have no respect for the past.

Only when I have to.

It's just that I'm an historian. I take the past seriously. I'm sorry you don't.

Then live in the past and don't look forward

Woah, hold up there!

There is a big difference between respecting the past, and living in the past.

Thats like saying in 5 years time
"Oh, yeah, Robert Harvey...he was ok, but that was so long ago now, he doesnt matter"

Respecting and having pride in the past is important, but so is keeping the eyes on the horizon, looking for that next flag

Perhaps a few tips on personal hygene might embarress him enough to get the shirt off.

"...If there has been one recurring theme through this whole shocking mess, it has been the misguided, inflated egos and their ill-judged determination to cling to long-standing old boy friendships. The bad advice that has guided the selfish and culpable James Hird has not only punctuated this saga but symbolised it..."

Exactly right, Broodruff. No one should live in the past. Historians certainly don't. Like everyone else, we live in the present--mortgages, rising prices, the kids' welfare. All of those things are here and now. I live in the present. But the past is important and worthy of respect and as it applies to St.Kilda that certainly goes for the team of 1966. Heroes. Never to be forgotten or blithely disregarded.

That's it from me for this subject. Having to defend history is just too stupid and demeaning. Cheers.

You should tell your geelong friend "it's time to get a life that was 2 months ago"
