Name the best games in St Kilda's history and mention why they are special victorys (or losses).

Here are a few that iv got, bear in mind i havnt seen most of the earlier games so im just assuming they were good matches.

1900 – Round 1 – Beat Melbourne after an after game protest to win their first game in the VFL after 48 straight losses

1913 – Preliminary Final – Beat first placed Fitzroy by 25 points to produce one of the biggest upsets in the history of football. With the current rules the Saints would’ve been premiers but in the early 1900s the first placed side could call a rematch if they lost. The next week Fitzroy and St Kilda would play again only this time Fitzroy won by 13 points

1963 - Round 1 - Beat Melbourne by 18 points with young ruckman Carl Ditterich making his amazing debut. Future stars Ian Stewart and Bob Murray also made their debuts

1965 – Semi Final – Beat Collingwood by one point

1966 – Grand Final – Beat Collingwood by one point to win their first (and to this date, only) premiership

1972 – Elimination Final – Beat Essendon by 53 points

1973 – Elimination Final – Beat Essendon by 61 points, new recruit George Young dominated with 6 goals off the half forward flank

1975 – Round 11 – Having only kicked 1 goal to 9 at half time the Saints conjured a massive comeback to win by 12 points

1976 – Round 8 – Beat Carlton by 38 points on the mud of Waverly Park

1976 – Round 12 – An undermanned St Kilda side defeated eventual premiers Hawthorn by 25 points

1978 – Round 6 – Beat Melbourne 204 to 141 breaking the record for the highest aggregate score in a single game, a record which still stands

1978 – Round 20 – Beat eventual premiers Hawthorn by 56 points

1978 – Round 22 – After losing to Carlton by 100 points in round 11, the Saints thrashed the Blues by 40 points. 35850 spectators squeezed into Moorabbin

1980 – Round 4 – Beat Essendon by 3 points, Alex Jesaulenko won his first game as captain/coach for St Kilda

1985 – Round 5 – After losses of 110, 140, 113 and 39 points to start the season the Saints won their first game against Footscray by 4 points

1989 - Round 2 - Beat Carlton by 4 points ending an 8 game losing streak against the Blues

1991 – Round 1 – Defeated two time reigning premiers Hawthorn by 25 points in front of a packed crowd of 22060 at Moorabbin

1991 – Round 7 – Beat the newly formed Adelaide Crows by 131 points, biggest win in the clubs history until round 22, 2005

1991 – Elimination Final – Lost to Geelong by 7 points, Tony Lockett kicked 9 for St Kilda and Billy Brownless kicked 8 for the Cats. One of the hardest fought finals of the 1990s

1992 – Round 12 – Beat Collingwood by 1 point after a snap by Craig Devonport late in the game after he famously copped a spray on the boundary line from coach Ken Sheldon

1992 – Elimination Final – Beat Collingwood by 8 points to advance to the Semi Finals

1993 – Round 4 – Beat Collingwood by 22 points, after the game Nicky Winmar lifted his jumper and pointed to his skin in remark to being racially abused by Collingwood fans

1994 - Round 7 - Beat Sydney by one point after being down by 48 points at three quarter time. Tony Lockett kicked 11 goals

1995 – Round 5 – On the bottom of the ladder with only one win, the Saints shocked the football world by beating Carlton, placed first with only one loss, winning by 56 points

1996 – Round 5 – Beat the Western Bulldogs (then Footscray) by 26 points. The game was played two days after St Kilda legend, Trevor Barker died of cancer at the tragically young age of 39

1997 - Round 19 - Beat Sydney by 9 points after being 16 points down at three quarter time

1997 - Preliminary Final - Beat North Melbourne by 31 points to reach the Grand Final

1998 - Round 6 - Beat West Coast by two points at Subiaco after being down by 18 points at three quarter time, Brownlow Medallist Robert Harvey was in top form, earning 34 brilliant possessions in this game

1998 - Round 10 - Beat the then second placed Sydney Swans by 101 points

2002 – Round 16 – Beat Carlton by 43 points, the St Kilda supporters started the wooden spoon remarks against the Blues as they squandered to their first wooden spoon in history

2003 - Round 11 - Beat Brisbane Lions by five points in the year of their third straight premiership

2003 – Round 18 – Beat Richmond by 80 points in Nathan Burke’s final game

2004 - Round 6 - Beat Brisbane by 1 point after unlikely hero Troy Schwarze slotted through the winning goal from 55 meters out with less than a minute to go

2004 - Round 9 - Beat West Coast by 101 points, St Kilda's forwards had a field day with Guerra (7), Gehrig (5), Milne (4), Hamill (4) and Riewoldt (2) kicking 22 goals between them

2004 – Round 10 – Beat Carlton 196 to 88, completed a ten game winning streak

2005 – Round 14 – Beat the Western Bulldogs by 18 points in an exciting contest, was the first of a 7 game winning streak

2005 – Round 18 – Beat Melbourne 176 to 88, Nick Dal Santo kicked 5 goals and gathered 25 possessions as rover in a best on ground performance

2005 – Round 22 – Beat Brisbane by a club record 139 points, Stephen Milne kicked 11 goals

2005 – Elimination Final – Beat Adelaide by 8 points, winning a seemingly impossible final

2006 – Round 11 – Beat Sydney by 2 points after a super tight contest in wet conditions at the SCG

2007 – Round 12 – Beat West Coast at Subiaco, winning another seemingly impossible game, the Saints lifted for club legend Robert Harvey’s 350th game

But I have to admit I am old enough to say the 1966 Grand Final. You could ask rogerwa. He remembers our first ever game in the VFL. He said that was pretty good !!

My Favourite Saints game and favourite Saints moment!! McKernan had no idea what hit him.. the Saints were ferocious that night.

There was a pretty awesome game againts the Blues at Moorabbin in '89 IIRC. Plugger gave Sticks a towelling. It had been ages since we'd beaten the BlueBeggars. We were going off as though we'd won a G.F... My bro and I completely wrote ourselves off that night ( much to the disgust of our respective partners)

Beating West Coast and Carlton by 101 and 108 points in subsequent weeks in 2004 wasn't too shabby ... not really our greatest performances though

Against WC we couldn't miss ... 7 goals from the Manchild

So a game's greatness is only to be determined with the benefit of hindsight?

No - That was to the reference that the 'game' marked the end of Brisbane but didnt spark OUR era...

Yeah, we won by 139 points. But do you really see a good game from the players when obviously the other side hasnt turned up. It was like training, and the game was finished by half time. It was a good game, every win is...but not a great one.

Once a game is pushed past a 60 point margin, it ceases to produce a good standard of football, one that requires at least some form of competition on the field.

It felt exactly like waking up the following morning and reading a St Kilda win after missing the game entirely. Yeh a good feeling but not a great one.
