KANGAS v 17th Team

Post: # 485426Post RooandKosi »

At first I didnt want the kangas tro go to the coast but NOW its a MUST!!!

Id rather the kangas go than the AFL get in another 17 team and gift them (like they always do) a premeirship within the firsat 5 years!!!

Its ineviteble and id rather the history of the roos kept than a newbie team come in.

Also in another 5 years we will see the WESTERN BULLDOGS relocated to SYDNEY.

I must have missed Freo, Brisbane Bears, Adelaide and Port Adelaide premierships in thier first 5 years, then.

The only one that happened to was West Coast of the interstaters.

The reasons to avoid a 17th team is the awful, gone and unlamented bye. It would be a logistical nightmare, anyway, I think.

Either bring in two new teams (Tassie? You could promote the Devils) or remove funding from Norf, watch them die in about 17.5 seconds from a terminal lanck of cash and then introduce a GC team as #16.

Gifted a premiership? Not likely.

Brisbane entered AFL in 1987 and even with the Fitzroy merger in 1996, still took 5 years to get there.

West Coast joined in 1987 also, took until 1992.

Adelaide joined in 1991. Took them 6 years.

Port Adelaide joined in 1996. Took them 8 years.

Fremantle joined in 1995. It took them until 2050.

Now you are moving the goalposts. First 5 years or first 10 years?

Don't move the criteria to suit your argument.

And by going with your argument, then you DON'T want the Kangaroos to go to the Gold Coast, as they will win three in a row like Brisbane?

Exactly what I was going to say.

What does a terminal lanck of cash mean?

or do you mean a terminal lack of cash?

i have a massive problem with the afl bringing in a 17th team.

once upon a time st kilda had a theoretical 1 in 12 chance of winning the premiership in any given year. didn't turn out that way, but in theory it was a 1 in 12 chance.

then it was 1 in 14 chance; then 1 in 15.

now it is 1 in 16.

enough is enough.

where is it going to end?

a 1 in 24 chance?

two divisions?

we might never see a st kilda flag the way things are heading.

imo if the kangaroos can't survive here, they should go to the gold coast.

i feel for their supporters, but in the harsh market reality of afl football victoria doesn't appear able to support 10 viable clubs.

if we were in the same position as them ... a spiralling $5million debt; unable to pay their own way and dependent on AFL charity and handouts to survive, i'd be looking at the gold coast as a fresh start and a golden opportunity.

sorry roos. that's life

Would hate to see a bye.

Bad enough that footy only goes for six months as it is.

Big Carl I like your theory but it needs to be balanced by the reality that there was more than meets the eye when it came to the twelve team comp then too. Not all teams had the same financial resources, there was no salary cap, some were just cheats and even religious affiliations meant that a one in twelve chance of a premiership was guaranteed for the likes of the Saints, the Roys, Roos and Tigers perhaps, but the Filth, Demons, Blues and Bombers...their chances were more likely closer to one in six given the above factors. Which still makes your theory hold I suppose!

Bottom line is that Vic centricity needs to do a 180 here. For the good of the comp the Roos must go to the coast. Sad but a fact. I'm not sure if this is the same sort of relocation as in the past. The Roys and South went for the good of the game itself, to spread into the unknown and all that (plus they had F*** all money). The Roos need to hop to the coast for the good of the competition as it stands...the game is already very healthy here in SE Qld, the other clubs suffer because the Roos have to be propped up financially and let's face it Melburnians, aren't you sick of all that Shinboner sentimental bullshyte which is just smoke and mirrors disguising an average team who has overachieved, with no real home, crap facilities and a coach who ends every sentence by audibly sucking back in about half a litre of saliva into his mouth.

All this whining about increased travel is ridiculous. We will not win a flag until we can consistently win on the road. As Brisbane, the Swans, Dealers and Power have shown over the last decade. So get used to it.

Besides, who actually barracks for the Roos anyway except for Ricky Ponting.

End of Rant.

Totally agree.

As it is to win a flag you need
- RECRUITING - to recruit the right group of players together
- COACHING - you need to have the coaching staff to bring the best out of them
- INJURIES - you need to have a relatively clear run of injuries
- WINDOW - the above three things combine to give you a Window of opportunity which might only last for 4 or 5 years before it is time to assemble a new look side and begin the cycle again
- COMPETITORS - the above 4 things enable you to get the best out of your team, but to win a premiership you need to hope that your peak is better than the peak of any of the other clubs in any particular year
- LUCK - even with all the above factors working your way you still need a bit of luck, or a lack of bad luck.

Fact is that with more clubs it is much harder to be the best.
I believe we need to ensure that there is no more than 16 clubs.
And indeed if anything they should be working to reduce the tot number of clubs.

I also feel for North.
But at least they are in a position to negotiate a pretty good deal that will preserve their past and give them a promising future.
Unlike how the South and Fitzroy cultures were obliterated in forced moves.

Yes the Shinboner spirit is never raised when they get thrashed.
Didn't see much Shinboner spirit when they played Geelong !

Agree Laidley has some strange mannerisms. If you told me he was a junkie I'd believe you - the Junkie Dog ?
