Should we Relocate to the Gold Coast?

We'd get a 'helping hand' from the AFL.

We'd get real 'home' games, against real 'away' teams.

We'd get to build new facilities.

We'd get real 'home' finals.

We'd still be the Saints.

We'd still have our jumper.

We've already moved homes 4 times in our history, what's another one?

Melbourne clubs start about 30% behind non-Melbourne clubs these days - just the way the AFL want it.

Thoughts?

Oh in answer to your question no, the saints aren't the saints if they are at the goldcoast.

Whilst i prefer the club stays in Melbourne if a move to GC was going to benefit the club for the future and provide a long term home, success and longevity for the club i would not be adverse to it. The club would have huge support in Melbourne for "Away" games and hopefully would have enough support for home games. Essentially this is the question no one can really answer will people in the GC adopt and AFL club that re located there? If we lmoved i would look into moving to South Brisbane myself.

The question is -

If we moved to the Gold Coast, would it be 'our' club?

When we win the flag within a couple of years (which would happen), would we have the same feeling as we would if we won it from Moorabbin, or Casey, or wherever we currently are?

Then the next question is, if we won the flag next year or the year after, would it feel the same as it would have 5 years ago? When the AFL wasn't corrupt (or as openly corrupt), if we were in Melbourne still.

Does a 'modern day' flag really count? They are effectively allocated out to the clubs who could provide the best $$ for the league.

The support in Melbourne would drop off like it has for fitzroy as people will start barracking for teams they can actually watch

4 moves? What are they? I can only think of one junction to moorabin, the others were only stadiums, this is a moving of the home base which is different.

I'd be a Storm only supporter if we became Gold Coast/Tassie/Canberra Saints.

It just wouldn't be the same.

Abuse doesn't faze me one iota. Why would it?

And why would I get abused for asking a question?

I'm sure it's a question that has been discussed at Board level at the club - so why wouldn't we discuss it here?

No-one will abuse you ... it's against the rules.

It's a very interesting question rodgerfox.

Personally, my answer is HELL NO.

But if you take a step back and be more objective, it's worth consideration.

We would almost certainly win a flag ... guaranteed home advantage gives you 10 wins per year + 3-4 away wins and you have your top four spot.

The club would have to agree to 8 matches in Melbourne each year for the next decade.

What a draw that would be ... 11 games on the Gold Coast, 8 games in Melbourne and 3 interstate trips.

Financially, in terms of AFL-backing and in terms of on-field success it would be sensational.

But it would tear the soul out of the club, and a lot of Melbourne-based Saints people would give up on St Kilda, and not follow them anymore.

This is the massive advantage non-Melbourne clubs have. Even when they travel to Melbourne, they play at the same ground they play at 4 or 5 times a year.

Southport Saints.

Has a nice ring to it.

We would have far superior facilities.

However, it's not something we'd consider at the moment, but if we had the same membership levels and support base as the Kangaroos, I'd jump at it in an instant.

Living in WA I can look at this quite dispassionately, which is something that Victorian supporters would have trouble doing.

Whilst I am not totally in favour of the idea - largely because of the number of people/supporters/members it would disenfranchise - I think it is a very attractive proposition that should be fully explored.

In short ... No I suggest if Westaway and co suggested this, they will get thrown out of town.... besides the AFL have a master plan, North to Queensland and the doggies to be the second Sydney side, with the doggies Smorgan signed an agreement to relocate after the doggies were bailed out financially the second time, they will relocate around 2010..... this is the sole reason these clubs were and still are kept afloat by the AFL......
