All the best in your retirement Joel, you will always be admired as a fair and skillful player. You carried yourself with distinction at both The Saints and The Hawks. Once a Saint though always a Saint and I hope we see you back sometime soon.

They said on sen he broke his leg in 97, would he have made the difference?

was actually a ruptured ACL.. missed a year or so with it.

Was in outstanding form at the time (Round 18 against Pies at G) and would have been extremely handy in september....he and spider remain fit, we probably have flag number 2.

missed 2 years, his knee was totally trashed by that filth scum osbourne. sad year imagine smith vidovic and spider would of won the grandfinal. still hurts to think of it, i hate adelaide.

anyway turned a potential star into a run of the mill player.

Admired him till end of 97.
Was there when his knee went.
The surgeons likened it to a severe car accident.

From memory we offered to pay him something like $150k in 98 despite the fact that he was out for the year.
That was good money back then.

Hawthorn offered him more and he walked, or should that be limped.

I was always pretty pissed off with him about that.
A sort of a pre-Colbert Colbert.
But at least he never really lived up to the promise he originally showed, though he did make all-Australian with the Hawks.

I seem to recall we were prepared to offer him a 1 year contract and Hawthorn offered him 2-3 years?

I don't think they offered more money, just a longer contract.

He always followed the money, even in the Ovens & Murray League before he was drafted. Played for 3 or 4 different teams up there, and not well liked because of it.

seriously these guys have a working life span of at the max 12 years so in that time they would want to make as much as they can especially the players who wouldnt be getting $$ from sponsership and endorsments lets put it this way if the company down the road was going to offer me more money for the same work load i would go for it

He was drafted in 1994 at 17 years old and came direct from Murray U18s. I don't think he ever had the opportunity to chase money.

Might be thinking of his father who played for Rutherglen, Wodonga, North Albury & Myrtleford. Inducted to O&M Hall of Fame 2005.

He was chasing money at 15, and the only reason he left the Saints was money.
Saints offered him $200,000.00 for the year of his rehab after knee surgery. Hawks offered him $400,000.00 for 2 years.

BJ is sticking with the Saints. Not sure what he is being paid, but I know who I'd rather have.

From memory he was demanding a deal that would have seen him get paid more for 1998 sitting it out than his contemporaries (Jones, Brown etc) would have got if they played every game under their performance based contracts. This at a time when we had salary cap problems because of the (relative) success of '97.... He walked away from a team primed for success and craving stability for more money... I know that in some ways that's just the modern game but I've hated him ever since and am glad that I won't be reminded of his narcissism every time I watch Hawthorn play. And that stupid headband....

There is no way you would stay in his position the saints should of made him stay because his efforts at the hawkes would of gone a long way at our club.

Hawkes thought he was worth more than what we did end of story good on him he is one player that i still think highly of even though he left us.

That was Smith.

Any soft spot I had for him was concreted over when he made that remark.

Bit harsh on Smith IMO

He was a young kid going into a long long rehab eventually trying to get back into a midfield consisting of Harvey, Winmar, Burke, Brown, Jones, Lappin... to name a few

i'd pbly would have jumped at a longer contract... there was a good chance he would never have made it

He had a huge career ahead with us.

Anyone who doubts it should look at our win against Collingwood in early 1997. He won the game; went on to have a good year until he did his knee against the Pies at the MCG later in the year.

Never played for us again.

I don't entirely blame him, but he was very money hungry and cashed in while he could.

Now he'll be well set up for retirement. Won't have to work ever again if he doesn't want to. Sound financial planning.

Have to say, losing Smith hurt me more than any of the others we lost over time, Plugger excepted....

I barracked for North with passion in 96 as I just couldn't bear seeing Plugger get a premiership medallion.

That is utter crap. Played for Yarrawonga as a junior and was drafted at 17. And i think he went away to melbourne for school. Never chased money then, and i have never heard of a player being paid for U18's.

Just to elaberate how do you suppose someone that gets drafted at 17 played for 3 or 4 different teams, expecially when he lived in yarrawonga which is at least 30mins from the nearest Ovens and Murray team and over 1 hour to most. Did he ride his bike to training to these places when he was 15 cause im sure his parents wouldnt have driven him all this way for no reason other than a little money.
