1. Wasting 2 draft picks on aquiring Brooks
2. Letting soft tissue injuries spiral out of control over years
3. trading draft picks for rejected players
4. trading a pick for Watts when we needed mids
5. failing to develop young players
6. Post Milne not fully exploiting the rookie list
This is the legacy that we have to overcome.....

Afraid not...do you maths again.....you needa cumulative margin much greater than that by abouta factor of two...Sam23 wrote:If we had've won by around 170 points....we would be somewhat a chance to make finals...if we beat the Tigers by 70 and Hawks win by 60.

Yes of course.....but we were going backwards last year....GT was not onlya dead end...he was digging a hole for us.JeffDunne wrote:Didn't you enjoy it when we were playing finals?saintsRrising wrote:There...now thats more accurate.JeffDunne wrote:1. Sacking Grant Thomas too slowly
We have stopped the rot....and have to restructure the list a bit....
You are blind to our lack of mids...just as GT was.

Well if you are correct JD...we will have a crap 2008....as Ross will still be here and implementing his vision.JeffDunne wrote:We were going backwards last year?
You been asleep for the past 6 months?
However I think you are wrong.
I posted in the first half of the year...that our second half of the year would be better than our first half...and it was.
And I will post right here and now.....that our 2008 will be better than our 2007.

He's gone and we are all better for it.
...have you noticed that GT isn't even a candidate for any of the open coaching jobs this year?
Why?
Because he's s***'!
This was an average year, but that's not to be unexpected.
A new coach
New tactics
....not to mention a few key injuries.
Start looking forward for Christ's sake. It's people like you within the Saint Kilda club that keep us perpetually losing!

it wasnt so much of an experimentation but a re-defining from within the coaches boxSt.Kenny wrote:Bakers bulls*** suspension affected the Eagles result i'm sure
Not to mention experimenting with the first "6 games' and a new coach !!
in my opinion a coach can watch his players train all summer and it will mean jack all in comparisons to seeing a player in the heat of the game and gaining an understanding of one's limitations and scope for improvement
every coaches has a different philosophy one would imagine and due to this various players as seen are better exponents of different positions due to a differing opinion - to both the players best interests and the team
it will gel

Lols, please. If we didnt have to play in Tassie last season and won against Freo, we would of finished top 4. This season was alot more spread out for the top 8, and we couldnt even make it.saintsRrising wrote:Yes of course.....but we were going backwards last year....GT was not onlya dead end...he was digging a hole for us.JeffDunne wrote:Didn't you enjoy it when we were playing finals?saintsRrising wrote:There...now thats more accurate.JeffDunne wrote:1. Face the facts, we have gone totally backwards this season, no doubt about it.

Tassie last year, eh? Would've finished Top 4 eh? If we do the Pies, Dogs and Eagles we finish Top 4 this year. And it means what, exactly? Jackshyte, that's what.
We were not good enough, last year or this. We could not run ahead of the pack - we never got ourselves clear of the rubbish. We have f*** all young footballers on their way up. Too many years for too many rehashed hacks like McGough.
The best at it is Mark Williams. Good kids, good recycled types - they're second. Why? Smart fella, that's why.

There isn't a team in the league we haven't beaten over the last two seasons. At our best, there isn't anybody we can't beat. To blame our disppointment on recruiting and development is missing the point I think. I think the list we have now is capable of so much more, and I won't let them off on account of a few mistakes at the draft table. We could have made finals with the list we have. We should have made finals. Here's a few reasons why I think we didn't.
Fitness: This year more than any other in recent memory we struggled to run out games. To this point we've won 6 out of 21 fourth quarters. RL implemented a game plan which required more running, but we didn't have the fitness base to excecute it. As games wore on, our basic skills got worse, we won fewer contests, kicked fewer goals and allowed our opposition to run over us. We need to get our players to a point where they can do what RL wants consistently for four quarters of football.
Injuries: Maguire and Hayes had big question marks over them coming back from bad injuries. Several players, including Max and Roo, had interrupted preseasons. Ball has been an ongoing management issue for some time now. Hamill and Gardiner never touched the field. Raph and X had ongoing troubles with fitness and form. We lost Goaddard in R7. We've had four guys who have played every game. That makes it a lot tougher to find consistently good form. Injury management is an ongoing concern with too many preventable soft tissue injuries. We need to get as much of our best 22 onto the field for as much of 08 as possible.
Skills: If RL had his time again, he'd probably have spent more time working on ball movement. I expect it to be a huge focus before the start of the 08 season. Our skills were attrocious for much of 07. The main culprits aren't the fringe guys who barely touched the ball, but the guys who saw a lot of ball and used it poorly. Some of this can be put down to fitness. Some of it was a result of poor decisions. But too often there was just an absence of the application of even the most basic skills. I expect a significant improement in this area in 08.
Anyone who watched us regularly could tell that there was a difference between what the coach was after and we actually got. Hopefully, with a year of experience, RL can now go away and correctly identify the problems which affected this club in 07 and take the necessary measures to ensure that, in 08, St. Kilda returns to where it should be - among the contenders for the flag.

LOL, I'd like to see your definition of worse.
No i hadn't....have you noticed that GT isn't even a candidate for any of the open coaching jobs this year?
But I did notice none of the prospective short listed coaches we interviewed last sesaon were in the running this year.
Not sure what that tells us, other than Lyon didn't beat out much to get the gig.

It's only naturally people will reflect on a season the minute it's over. Don't get your knickers in a knot about it.
