Our ruck situation.

Post: # 434212Post borderbarry »

With the apparent large amount of young potential ruckmen available for this years draft, we should look to use our second draft pick for one, and take another as a rookie. We should retain Matt Clarke as a part time ruck coach.

Certainly not as a player. Will be interesting to see which way Lyon goes with recruiting in this years draft.. In the previous era, it was quite openly stated that the best player would be picked, regardless of what position they could fill.

For all we know that was the arrangement from day one.

Actually...the more you think about it the more it makes sense that it was part of the agreement to get him on board, one year as a player then straight in to ruck coaching role.

He's an Adelaide boy ... why would he stay in Melbourne as ruck coach when all his ties are in South Australia, and he could play SANFL and ruck coach over there?

They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.

I am not sure what your source is....but having heard Sheehan talk on this years kids the views that I have heard was:

*that last year was the draft for talls...not this year

*Yes Kruezer at the top...but thin for talls after that....

Last year was the year for KPPs.

Gumbleton, Hansen, Thorp, Reid, N.Brown, Sellar and M.Brown all would go top 5 in most drafts. Then there were a heap of players throughout the entire draft that would usually be taken top 30.

However the only top quality ruck prospect was Leuenberger, while Renouf and Hampson were a couple who were ok.

This is the year for ruckmen. Kruezer and Bellchambers are both very good talents and should go top 10, while there are a heap of other promising ruckmen who could develop into quality players (McEvoy, Wundke, Connelly, Mulligan, Putt). Those guys will probably all go in the first 2 or 3 rounds.

He's also a trained veterinarian.
The club might have set up a job at a clinic so he can do that and ruck coach on the side.

I don't know...just guessing because the whole recruitment of Clarke seemed a bit strange from the start.

Maybe he could get a role with training services.

He could look after Goose, Fish, Roo

He might have been able to cure "Mad Dog" Muir too if he had been around back then ...

Absolutely agree with that. Cant for the life of me understand why Clarke would be drafted unless there was some sort of agreement about a ruck coaching role after his playing career ended, which could be argued that it already has.

I suspect he will be the ruck coach next season and I believe this was part of the reason they got him.

The thought of moving states for 1 more footy season IMO isn't all that appealing when you consider that he pbly could have made a fair wage back home in the SANFL or a more local comp...

SANFL has salary cap of only about $300K.

I dont think we have a problem in the ruck department.

Macca is coming along very well and we have Arch and Stanley in the reserves that could come on by the end of the year.

We may need a second ruck if Gardi retires at the end of the year and if for some reason Kosi is not at St.Kilda in 2012.

At this stage we are good with the rucks, and next year it should be
1st ruck: Macca
2nd ruck: Kosi
Back ups: Stanley and then Archer.

Your kidding. Macca is fragile, yes showing alot of promise but has a way to go yet and really a 2nd ruck. Gardi will retire. Koz is not a ruckman. Stanley has an attitude problem I am led to believe and Archer has a long way to go, still young and developing. So we have no experience. Big problem in my book and has been for a while.

Ben McEvoy is pretty much one of - if not the most - promising young ruck in the comp.

Rest easy.

Big mac is going to be a beauty, we still could do with a bit of a top up in the ruck stocks. Stanley and Archer look like KPP not rucks long term. I would be scouting out guys like Dawson Simpson etc someone who isn't getting a run at their club even Mark Blake and run him into players as a battering ram. They wouldn't cost much you would think. Does Collingwood have anyone we could raid? I would love to take something back from them. Oh thats right they don't have a salary cap.

Commentators were saying on Sunday that Geelong have 5 ruckmen on their list that are not in their best 22. Maybe we could pinch one of them. Old age has caught up with me and I can't remember who they were.

Not saying he won't be good. Just saying, if he gets an injury/reported we are up the creek. Eg - GFs last year. Loosing Gardiner was diabolical just like Spider in 98.
