Ross Lyon...
...must have been licking his lips at the prospect of a boring, slow game against Sydney.
We could have sealed the game by running through the corridor and kicking long, but no, we play along with the kicking backwards and the possession footy.
That is the worst game of footy I've seen this year. Even worse than our display against Hawthorn.

our guys look as though they don't believe in the game plan. even with close to our best team out there for the first time in years we didn't get near the swans.battye wrote:We could have sealed the game by running through the corridor and kicking long, but no, we play along with the kicking backwards and the possession footy.
i don't know where we go from here.

Hopefully someone is the phone to GT offering him his job backbigcarl wrote:i don't know where we go from here.
Lyon must realize we aren't Sydney. And we will never win playing that gameplan.
We are an attacking team, we were doing it under GT before the Bulldogs and Geelong, and we have the same list, so there is no reason why we can't continue to attack.
Lyon has said he wants us to play attacking footy, well, what's coming out of his mouth at the press conference seems to be different to what's coming out of his mouth in the coaches box.
With 5 minutes to go and 15 or so down, we should have had a Gram or a Fisher unloading from the defensive 50 into the forward line (ala the final seconds vs the Bulldogs).

I love watching the saints, week in week out, wet & dry, Moorabbin, Waverley, Dome, losses, big losses, more losses, wins... But
I hate watching this rubbish Lyon is instructing them to play now.
It doesn't play to our strengths & if Lyon is half a coach he will recognise that & make some changes over summer. It was excusable when the team was injury struck but it's a disgrace now. And I don't believe him when he says that he wants to play attacking footy... you can't play attacking footy with your whole team behind the ball.

RL is a coach that is relevant in 2007, not one that belonged in bygone era (ie. GT).
You can't expect our players to all magically adapt to a game plan that will make us successful.
Quite simply, too many of our players aren't capable of doing what RL requires from them, and will be chopped at the end of this season.
Remember, RL came in as coach half way through the draft/trading season and will only have a full crack at it at the end of this season.
I only think it would be fair to properly judge him half way through next season once GT's influence is significantly reduced.

Heck,
Heare we go again. Coaches fault.
Yes the coach does contibute but the biggest mistake today again is effort by the players.
However, when the team is down mentally it is up to the coach to make game day moves. I used to groan and grizzle on this forum when GT woudn't make key changes. Too insistent to meet the game plan. Well if the oppo is too good the game plan wont be executed as expected without effort and mental application.
Ross, the game plan wasn't working after QTR1. After losing the second and third quarters with team application degrading by the minute some big change was required. Teams and people dont magically turn things around without a spark. A spark is unlikely to occur without change. I have read many good quality options presented on the match thread today. All I saw was Fraser being pulled when he could have gone to CHF, CHB or even FB. Give the man a job if he is not scoring goals.
Get Nick to the midfield for a while to provide more marking skill and better forward delivery if he is not moving as expected at CHF. Whats wrong having Nick or Gram run with Goodes if they aren't starring? Blake was being cut up early on Goodes.
If the team is not fit, only play fit players. Quality will generally beat lack of quality but if the injury list is extended noone sees the gain last into future weeks. Rest those who need it or we will never ever know who should not be on the list for the longer term.
Dont let games slide when the application is down and the game plan is not executed properly. Make the change. Unless you do this we will never ever know what could have eventuated. Without the change, we know the likley outcome. 1 last quarter win in the last 7 games just extends itself and becomes a blight on the teams pysche.
We need to ensure our list is not so susceptible in future years. A few key players gone and the team really struggles compared to other teams. This is particularly so with the midfield.

Midfield clearances and clear winners are needed to make an effective forward line.

A few additional random thoughts.
1) On reflection, I can see what Lyon was trying to do in selecting CJ. The way the Swans play, we didn't need any extra in-and-under players and an outside receiver-type player was useful. CJ got into a lot of good positions through hard running, but he simply doesn't have any skills. Armo or even Howard would have been a better option.
2) For the second week in a row, Attard didn't make an impact as a tagger. I think he really is on the chopping block for next week, even though he kicked a goal.
3) As one of the posters above seemed to suggest, the last quarter fadeouts are not just a question of our running out of puff (although that certainly plays a part). They are also a reflection of Lyon's failings as a match day coach. He is far too inflexible and won't alter his game plan until things get desperate: at which time he seems to send out a vague instruction about "attack at all costs" following which we make a couple of comical and disastrous turnovers and it's game over.
4) I note that a number of posters on here think that we can still make the finals. I'd be interested to know how on earth they think we are going to be able to get within 6 goals of the Eagles in their (and our) current form.

Once again, as I asked OWTS in another thread, I'm not saying you are wrong in suggesting that Lyon is going to be a successful coach, but I'm wondering what you have seen in his efforts so far that makes you so confident?saintspremiers wrote:You can't expect our players to all magically adapt to a game plan that will make us successful.

Ty this weeks opposition, Fremantle. The last time we beat them seems so long ago. They are also slow have some good talls but also seem to play larger grounds better than us. How will we beat them?
I would suggest kick long and quickly to the forward line, be hard at the contest, protect the ball carriers, set up plays that allow for quick movement, win the clearances.
Be prepared to make change if the game plan doesn't run to plan rather than hope this is miraculously going to change!

I dont know how much Ross Lyon contributed to our loss tonight, but if he is a selector he did. We had too many passengers again. We cannot afford the luxury of players like C.Jones, and I believe Attard needs a break as well. Gehrig, 2 goals in two weeks. Not good enough. It is not as though we have nobody in our reserves playing their guts out, while these weak efforts keep getting selected in front of them.

Teflon: the "agenda" -as you put it - is a product of the way the team is playing and being coached ATM. If we were playing something even approximating to a decent brand of footy, then nobody would be bagging Lyon.
