Without doubt, the Board's decision is correct.
In a Football Club, the Board, the Administration, the Players and everyone else involved are working in a TEAM environment - that is, they should ALL work together.
Unfortunately, GT did not see it that way and his attitude towards control of most things by him has bitten him on the bum.
Good luck GT in your future endeavours.

Shouldn't there be some sort of debate on the Thomas sacking in the main forum before we go off half-cocked and start a poll?

To be honest, I don't know yet.

GT certainly took the St Kilda football club a long way, from wooden spoons 5 or so years ago, to consecutive Preliminary finals.

But having said that, we are not the superpower we were for the first 14 weeks of 2004. I think maybe other coaches began to work GT's tactics out, and it was quite easy to see where our weaknesses were. Pretty much, we were too predictable on a regular basis, which is why of late we struggled against top class opposition (ie Fremantle).

New blood in the coaching panel might just be what we need to make the next step. This could start a new era for STKFC, just as GT started a new era 5 years ago :)

Go Saints! :)

I'm a wait and see person in regards to this. I think it was a silly move to dump a Finals coach with no replacement that's all.

When they created LENNY HAYES (in the shadow of Harvs) they forgot to break the mold (again)- hence the Supremely Incredible Jack Steven!!

Looking back over the year

at some of the games and some of the selections

and reading between the lines

imho

yes it is the right decision

I am now extremely doubtful that GT could have taken us to a flag

he may have got us close

If this poll allows you to vote more than once then its pointless IMHO

About as much credibility as an Australian Idol voting line LOL...but 55c cheaper

I have reasonable doubt about whether or not the decision by the board was correct. However, i choose to take a wait-and-see approach. See how it goes.

This decision will go down in history as the dumbest move since Norm Smith was dumped....The ONLY reason you sack a coach is if he doesn't have the support of the players , thats all that counts....Listen to any of the players talk and you soon realise the way they are thinking . Once again we are in self destruct mode...Only hope LINFOX can fix things.

bad decision. even if we win it next year it would be a success built on gt's hard toil. i'm sure he'll be back at the club one day, probably as president

long overdue...
It was more a dictatorship than anything. This will go down in the list for mediocre coaches. No ground was made in 5 years and with the list we had a bum on the street would have done better. Constantly making excuses and ruining Riewoldts career. Playing riewoldt in the backline... whats going on there when the all australian forward pocket is played in the backline.

GT was his own man right from the start, definitely from left field and created what appears to be a new culture at Moorabbin. I was a fan of his right from the start. His level headedness in all situations was reassuring to those of us left hurting after years of being bottom scrapers and couldhavebeens.

Having said that, GT's thoughts about the value of ruckman often left me bewildered after beatings from teams who had the rucking goods at crucial times - last years final quarter V Sydney hurting most. He couls certainly prepare a team for battle but his ability to coach on match day when things were tight or we got behind were seemingly questionable and lacking inspiration.

The most unfounded doubt I had about Gt was his luck. There is no doubt that he rarely had at his disposal a full list and often it was top 10 players regularly unavailable to him. What he could have done with that may have been seen in those first 10 games of 2004 but will never be realised for him now. It may simply be that he was an unlucky coach and in the cut throat world of AFL where your premiership window is limited, how long could the board go before trying someone else. Maybe it was bad luck or could the team managed differently have produced the premiership we all dream of.

It's all conjecture and whilst I will miss GT, I'm anxiously anticipating who they'll appoint. I really hope Gary Ayres, Dennis Pagan, and Mark Thompson aren't on their hit list. Guy McKenna and John Longmire although not tested at top level both come from successful on field backgrounds and seem to have the mental goods to take over a top role.

Whoever it is I wait with baited breath and the hope for a true ruckman

GT may not have been the greatest coach around, and certainly did have some flaws however one thing is certain, he made some fantastic improvements to the stkilda football club that many others have failed to do.

In my mind this is not about GT, it's about the alternative. I think an untried coach is not what we need right now.

I'm hoping that the board will surprise me and announce that some highly respected coach has been appointed to take over, but I fail to see who this might be.

YES 28% [33]
NO 34% [40]
I'll wait and see 37% [43]
--------
= 116 votes
--------

Unless I'm mistaken, there is 116 votes there, poochy, not 1113 !!

BTW, nice to see all the people sitting on the fence (37%). Make a decision !!

They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.
