Coaches rejigged per Cleary

Post: # 2083541Post WellardSaint »

Boris- Head of Game Plan n Strategy

Harves- Mids (derr)

Bolton- Fwds

Jared Rivers -Backs

I guess, a wild guess, that in 3 yrs maybe, Boris gets the Head Coach gig and RTB gets Director of Coaching.

Big wild guess but could happen.
But...Cats have already 'Cottoned On' to how good Boris is, and might seduce him back to replace the Kray thug

Pretty happy with this, as long as the backline doesn't go backwards. Harvey as midfield coach makes so much more sense.

St Kilda have made some big changes to their coaching structure as they prepare to return to the finals in 2025.

7NEWS chief AFL reporter Mitch Cleary has confirmed that a shake-up has taken place, with former backline coach and Geelong champion Corey Enright being promoted to head of game plan and strategy.

Meanwhile, Saints champion and fan favourite Robert Harvey will now be the midfield coach (he was previously in charge of the forwards).

It’s a role very familiar to Harvey, who won back-to-back Brownlow medals as a mid in 1997 and 1998.

The roles of the panel’s new additions — Brendon Bolton and Jared Rivers — have also been revealed.

Bolton — who was director of coaching at Collingwood — will now be in charge of St Kilda’s forwards.

Rivers (a former Melbourne defender who was a successful coach for the Collegians in the VAFA) is the backline coach.

Former Saints star and midfield coach Brendon Goddard was unveiled the club’s VFL coach in October.

It’s a muscled-up line-up for Ross Lyon who returned to the club for the 2023 season and had an immediate impact.

The Saints finished sixth in 2023 but struggled to back it up this year and slumped to twelfth.

In Lyon’s first stint in the chair he coached St Kilda to grand finals in 2009 and 2010 and was considered hugely unlucky not to get his hands on the silverware.

The 2010 grand final was famously a draw and involved a replay of the game the following week (in which Collingwood won).

Lyon also took Fremantle to their first grand final in 2013, which again resulted in a narrow loss (15 points).

Premiership cups have been elusive for St Kilda throughout their history and also for Lyon.

Their last and only AFL/VFL flag came in 1966 and they currently have the longest premiership drought in the competition.

Worried about Bolton being Fwds coach.
I reckon he doesn't play well with others.

Would've preferred a recently retired fwd from another club, fresh eyes, new ideas, etc

If Boris is now head of Game Plan and Strategy does he still go to games, does he sit in the coaches box on matchdays ?
Or is his new role more suited to during the week where he can suggest tweaks etc.

How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?

The change is now, Boris is coach and Ross takes the media and the cameras on game day.

Hinkley/Carr all over.

Still don't see RTB sitting on the boundary line during the game though.

I had the impression Pies won a premiership with only 2 serious fwd weapons, Bobby Hill and Jamie Elliott. Not bad for whatever coach engineered that.

Interesting that Enright is the strategist. I would have thought that was the role of the head coach.

Super smart by Ross
I’m convinced he was brought in now to resurrect poor football department structure and processes that has crept in
He may not be the premiership coach and that’s ok if he lays the foundations- he’s turned this lost over for youth considerably after many early doubters said he’d just top up with role players - nonsense
Harvs to middle - his home ground - makes a lot of sense
Boris will sit across the top of all 3 line coaches ….bht dobt expect Ross to drink tea and have little say ..
The good news from this is they’re clearly comfortable with “new” Ross and he himself is also ….the old one would never have publicly handed over the reigns like this
Bolton is the unknown…..I haven’t been a huge wrap in past but we’ll see soon enough if that forward half calls in a heap
Kicked 99 points 4 of our last 7 games last year ….ahowed we could score when needed….that style has to continue
I feel as a club we are in sooo much better hands than we have ever been
I’m just pissed we can’t extend Bassatt 3 more years ….change constitution the guys a gun

No mention of Lenny Hayes anywhere - does he still have a developmental role? Or, is his influence diminishing- I hope not!

Bassat instigated the changes. Not Lyon

Did you see Bassat on draft night next to the recruitment team? I love how he's overseeing everything that Ross does.

I don't think he would need to sit on Lyon's shoulder if Geoff Walsh was still at St Kilda.

I agree that Bolton is the unknown, but I'm not worried about our ability to score if Enright is now in charge of game plan and game day strategy.

I think Bassat is constantly demanding feedback from his assistant coaches and from Lyon. Bassat realised that Enright had a large say in how the team played in the last 8 weeks of 2024. Bassat wasn't prepared to just sit back and 'trust' that style to continue.

Lyon didn't 'hand over' the reins. The new structure is a formal method of allowing Enright to exert more control. At the very least, Bassat has decided that the way the team performed in the latter half of the year is how we need to be training and playing.

I see it differently, Bassat is a Lyon cheerleader.

And our new coach in Darren Flannigan ex Geelong ruckman as ruck coach he had Marshall, Keeler, Heath, and SSP Boyd in middle of ground working on ruck craft. Dobson was still running with the new recruiters. great Idea to have a ruck coach.

Ross is in it to win a Premiership himself, not to set it up for someone else. He still hasn't won one as a player or Coach, despite coming really close on 3 occasions. There is no way he wants to leave the game without winning one.

Agree on Bassat, we've got to change our Constitution and keep him. Everything could go belly up if his replacement isn't great. Like when we went from Butters to Westaway. Butters on the gear was a better option!
