Yep, no offence to the blokes we picked up (who I’m sure are good, just not what we need), but that win while good in the moment, is going to inflict long term pain for the club I fear.Teflon wrote: ↑Wed 20 Nov 2024 9:31pm Well….i said it at the time when everyone was high fiving giving beating Carlton late in a season for a nothing win…thatll cost

Yeah, we don't take any NGAs naturally. Maybe that was why we shifted up slightly, to get in before a Hoffman bid?Brunswicksainter wrote: ↑Wed 20 Nov 2024 9:30pmI also hope we go Hoffman but think it’s more likely he slides to late 60’s or rookie draft. Pick 28 will be used on a different player, would be massive overs for Cole or Hoffman.St Dave wrote: ↑Wed 20 Nov 2024 9:19pmI do want to start by saying I like the picks, reading more about them and from a few on here, they seem like good potential players, just now over to the club to get the most out of them.Brunswicksainter wrote: ↑Wed 20 Nov 2024 8:51pmSt Dave wrote: ↑Wed 20 Nov 2024 8:41pmDefense is our best area of the field so unless we are planning 2-3 years ahead (and still I think mids and forwards especially need more prospects coming through) I dont really see this as needs based.Brunswicksainter wrote: ↑Wed 20 Nov 2024 8:30pmVery debatable that these are best available. I think Allen and Armstrong are better prospects. Appears to be more need based recruitments to me.
Plus our two NGAs are defenders so we have any need covered there.
I don’t see it that way. We’re very light on for key defenders, although I agree we have surplus running half backs. Expect to see Sinclair or NAS play more mid minutes next year. Travaglia is more of a winger anyways and wood and hill are not getting any younger.
Re the two NGA’s Hoffman is a project player who is many years off it and Cole is a genuine dud, if we pick him I will be very upset. Given the trades we have made tonight I doubt that is the intention.
I agree we are light on key backs, but neither of these guys are that (maybe Cole is though reading his profile). Like you say, Travaglia is likely going to push on to the wing, and Tauru seems like a third back/interceptor, but maybe he ends up more a swingman going forward as well?
I just think the fact they are more project players that we aren't really drafting for their primary position makes them more best available picks, rather than a needs based pick that helps us straight away.
I wouldn't write off Hoffman though, I was seeing reporting in the last few days that he is a bit of a bolter and might go early 30s.
On tauru he could definitely play as a key back, currently 193 cm with potential to grow another inch you would think. Massive verticle, seems to play taller than he is.

Re: (NO) Surprise! We pick 2 DEF
So we should have gone thru Season 2024 not winning a game so we received the Number 1 Draft Pick (being an elite mid)?
Really?
EVERY time you go onto the park, you do so to win, to build confidence and to attract the profile winning affords
That profile also puts the Club in an advantageous position in regard any desired Free Agency players
Plus, given a culture where we lose what does that say to the kids who are our future?
That they should move elsewhere to achieve success
The win against Carlton, against Geelong and against the other Clubs late in the season send a message - both within the Club and outside the Club
We look to build on those wins
The lessons were against Adelaide in the wet over there and against Brisbane, the wins more positive given the rebounds from those losses
We will lose matches but we can draw on those comeback wins as the business model - the players knowing they are good enough including as a team

Fantastic and astute picks and exactly what we needed. Pure footballers is what we need and this is exactly what these two are. Think Hird, Sicily Goodes Tom Stewart that’s what we have drafted.

Dogs.
West-Coke.
Dogs.
That's what stands between us and a Jobe Shanahan steal.
Paper tigers have picked Faull and Armstrong, and already have Sampson.
Dogs already have Ugle-Hagen, Naughton and Darcy. They need key defenders.
Therefore, I have West-Coke as really the only danger. They need key forwards. But, the taller of the Wittlocks is, surprisingly, still there. Would double as a ruckman too. And they need rucks.
Reckon we're in with a pretty damn good chance here.
This bloke does some pretty fair player assessments, IMHO.
Just don''t pick up some undersized half back flanker type Saintas!

You get a first round pick every year. That's a pretty good chance at drafting a gun mid. The last mid that we drafted in the first round who made the AA team? Brendon Goddard in 2002

Re: (NO) Surprise! We pick 2 DEF
I would have loved a Ute mid or two, but you cannot overlook the best talent available to draft for specific need.
Maybe we will buck tradition and have elite power running on all lines as opposed to pure midfield.
Talking to a GCS recruiter last week and he was pretty certain we would take Traviglia with one of our picks, and he rates him very highly.
I think we have drafted two athletic talents who are well suited to the modern game and our hard running game plan, who appear to be the best available talent at our picks.

Don't like the two defenders.SAINT-LEE wrote: ↑Wed 20 Nov 2024 8:18pm Well well well
Once again we grab 2 defenders ( though the AFL lists Tobie as a MID he's played 99% of his career thus far as a DEF).
Surely there's options with Tobie who could slot into the mid easily and the Flying Viking could take a foreward spot in a few years easily.
Well which would you prefer.
Toby Travaglia defender
+ Alex Tauru defender
OR
for the next 15 years
Harvey Langford midfielder
+ Josh Smillie midfielder
Oh plus an egotistical useless pointless insignificant last minute win over Carlton.
I will repeat it again for the idiots.
Winning premierships is more important than wins over Carlton.

We had to do the right thing and not tank they say.
Well Richmond didn't.
They took Sam Lalor instead of calling Levi Ashcroft.
North didn't.
They took Finn O'Sullivan instead of calling Levi Ashcroft.
Carlton didn't.
They took Jagger Smith instead of calling Levi Ashcroft.
Adelaide didn't.
They took Sid Draper instead of calling Levi Ashcroft.
Collectively they have gifted Brisbane enough points 897 to be precise.
That is worth pick 21, a late first round pick.
Like Brisbane need a bonus first round pick.
But those clubs marketing departments will be happy, they got the man they called first.

Re: (NO) Surprise! We pick 2 DEF
As usual many of the Saints supporter 'experts' who have limited knowledge in what the inner sactions of the football departments development plans and tactics are, but continue to carry on like pork chops anyway.
The draft can be very frustrating for all of us supporters sitting on the edge of our seats as we have much more invested than many of the decision makers at the club, and with the clubs draft history of major stuff-ups in the past it's not too surprising that we are all nervious.
However there is still plenty of time to improve our midfield (both within the club and with new inclusions) and we have no idea what the club has planned, and if we did the opposition clubs would know as well. So what's the point of yelling and screaming now?

Yeah but you don't need to be a club insider to see our midfield is very poor, and the part of the ground in most need of attention (and most important in AFL).SaintWiki wrote: ↑Thu 21 Nov 2024 9:07am As usual many of the Saints supporter 'experts' who have limited knowledge in what the inner sactions of the football departments development plans and tactics are, but continue to carry on like pork chops anyway.

Over the last few years we've only drafted 2 out-and-out mids, Wilson (who looks to have a lot of potential) and Windy (who looks good especially on the defensive side, but no gamebreaker) and the rest are flankers, wings, forward/mids, utilities, talls etc. Pou has shown signs, but is he a mid? Is he a forward?
So its frustrating when this isn't addressed with our top picks, whether that's drafting the best mid available, or taking someone a few picks early, or trading back/out if there's nothing of value there.
I just can't see us solving our problems by playing 8 wingers/HB flankers every week.

Re: (NO) Surprise! We pick 2 DEF
The question is how many Top 10 Draft Picks since we were a basket case, hence Riewoldt and Koschitzke (then 62!!) then the immediate years post that period?
And the reasons you get Top 10 Picks (leaving aside the nonsense of Father/Son and Academy which distort) being that you are ordinary, at best?
Yes, we missed a period to re-establish on the back of McEvoy, McCartin and Billings.
Now we look to establish on the backs of Clark, King, Phillipou and the 2 from last night.
And we do not continue the Boom to Bust cycle

Geez, this bloke is obsessed with me!
Pou is a mid/forward, that's what he was drafted as and currently listed as and played as, like I clearly say above...
He also averages just over 13 touches a game in his first 2 years, not really midfield numbers...
