(NO) Surprise! We pick 2 DEF
Well well well
Once again we grab 2 defenders ( though the AFL lists Tobie as a MID he's played 99% of his career thus far as a DEF).
Surely there's options with Tobie who could slot into the mid easily and the Flying Viking could take a foreward spot in a few years easily.

Have you heard of best 2 available?
In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.

Re: (NO) Surprise! We pick 2 DEF
And yet once again they just so happen to magically appear as DEF lol.
When we going to select pure MID's?
Plenty of them left & I guarantee some will be stars.
We are dying for MID and could've traded into a better scenario.
I do say, as you read, Tobie can be a mid, but he's off the same caliber as others we can do the same who have 1-3 yrs on him.

Re: (NO) Surprise! We pick 2 DEF
We all wish them well but to say they or any other top 20 are the best in whatever pick is pure conjecture. 90% of the AFL draft history proves this to be true. Sooo pick the best mids available not the best player ( you think it is)

Re: (NO) Surprise! We pick 2 DEF
I've actually come around on those two.
They can both play on ball, and, kick goals up forward. And both have huge upside potential to go.
Whilst it won't be a 'Paddy McPuddin over Petracca' meltdown repeat from me this time, I will however, 'actively' contribute to the 'meltdown thread' if we have the 'Twin Ts' pencilled-in to be wasted as defenders.

Battle, Paton and Bonner are gone, Howard, Webster and Corby on limited time, so it makes sense.

Very debatable that these are best available. I think Allen and Armstrong are better prospects. Appears to be more need based recruitments to me.

Defense is our best area of the field so unless we are planning 2-3 years ahead (and still I think mids and forwards especially need more prospects coming through) I dont really see this as needs based.Brunswicksainter wrote: ↑Wed 20 Nov 2024 8:30pmVery debatable that these are best available. Plus our two NGAs are defenders so we have any need covered there.

Re: (NO) Surprise! We pick 2 DEF
Now Saintas, our 2025 first rounder, split for a pick in the late teens, plus one in the early twenties. With maybe a pick in the late thirties coming back out way if we're really lucky. We'll need some junk picks to match any bids on our two academy blokes.
Then, we go for Shanahan. His multiple VFL games kicking multiple goals has swung me on this guy. I'd then be prepared to waste the Hammer in defence.
And I want Martin's man Hynes! If we could get him with an early 20s pick... highway robbery on our behalf. If we can only secure one extra late first/early second round pick, then I'd actually use it on Hynes.
Make it happen Saintas!
Actually, if we pulled-off that split for our 2025 first rounder, that'd be highway robbery on our behalf too. Considering it'll be something like pick 15 or 16 (and that's before the likes of Carlscum's father n' sons are factored in).

Re: (NO) Surprise! We pick 2 DEF
Dont think Im not pleased, its just I KNEW we were full of s***. All nonstop talk about, "mids mids mids, gotta pick mids, gunna die without mids, wont see a granny ever without mids" then do nothing to position to grab the best mid and draft 2 defenders. What the actual

I don’t see it that way. We’re very light on for key defenders, although I agree we have surplus running half backs. Expect to see Sinclair or NAS play more mid minutes next year. Travaglia is more of a winger anyways and wood and hill are not getting any younger.
Re the two NGA’s Hoffman is a project player who is many years off it and Cole is a genuine dud, if we pick him I will be very upset. Given the trades we have made tonight I doubt that is the intention.

Sigh…
All posters are equal, but some posters are more equal than others.
Re: (NO) Surprise! We pick 2 DEF
In terms of the players we will have running around as mids, there are Clark, Phillipou, Wilson and Windhager
Then Owens if they go that route with him - and Wanganeen-Mileta who is quite probably just too good to park on a half back flank as his career
Despite all the commentary on here (and elsewhere) about is having no mid “stars” I think we have some kids heading for that description
On the kids now Drafted, we trust they impact as the kids named above have - so automatic AFL selections
There remains the need for support for Marshall, Howard and King
There are options noting one of the kids Drafted tonight is described as a key defender at 194cm, plus Schoenmaker plus Heath plus Caminiti but these options may take time given the responsibilities we are asking them to assume
Then there is Sharman to support King
In my view we do lack a “small lockdown” defender able to negate the key “small forwards” across the competition (acknowledging Webster’s age)

No complaints from me. They were both the best available and look like versatile athletes.

Don’t jinx the Nasiah selection. Still more likely than not he leaves us next year.

Re: (NO) Surprise! We pick 2 DEF
I do want to start by saying I like the picks, reading more about them and from a few on here, they seem like good potential players, just now over to the club to get the most out of them.Brunswicksainter wrote: ↑Wed 20 Nov 2024 8:51pmSt Dave wrote: ↑Wed 20 Nov 2024 8:41pmDefense is our best area of the field so unless we are planning 2-3 years ahead (and still I think mids and forwards especially need more prospects coming through) I dont really see this as needs based.Brunswicksainter wrote: ↑Wed 20 Nov 2024 8:30pmVery debatable that these are best available. I agree we are light on key backs, but neither of these guys are that (maybe Cole is though reading his profile). Like you say, Travaglia is likely going to push on to the wing, and Tauru seems like a third back/interceptor, but maybe he ends up more a swingman going forward as well?
I just think the fact they are more project players that we aren't really drafting for their primary position makes them more best available picks, rather than a needs based pick that helps us straight away.
I wouldn't write off Hoffman though, I was seeing reporting in the last few days that he is a bit of a bolter and might go early 30s.

Re: (NO) Surprise! We pick 2 DEF
I also hope we go Hoffman but think it’s more likely he slides to late 60’s or rookie draft. Pick 28 will be used on a different player, would be massive overs for Cole or Hoffman.St Dave wrote: ↑Wed 20 Nov 2024 9:19pmI do want to start by saying I like the picks, reading more about them and from a few on here, they seem like good potential players, just now over to the club to get the most out of them.Brunswicksainter wrote: ↑Wed 20 Nov 2024 8:51pmSt Dave wrote: ↑Wed 20 Nov 2024 8:41pmDefense is our best area of the field so unless we are planning 2-3 years ahead (and still I think mids and forwards especially need more prospects coming through) I dont really see this as needs based.Brunswicksainter wrote: ↑Wed 20 Nov 2024 8:30pmVery debatable that these are best available. On tauru he could definitely play as a key back, currently 193 cm with potential to grow another inch you would think. Massive verticle, seems to play taller than he is.
