Draft Preferences

Post: # 2082517Post B.M »

Who do you want?

Nuts on the line, no Harry hindsight’s

Assuming the following are definitely gone
Lalor
O’Sullivan
Ashcroft
Draper
Smith
And Langford and Tauru are probably gone

My selections if keeping pick 8
Smillie
Reid

Very tempted by Harry Armstrong but went two gun inside mids.

Agree with those.

I personally think Reid could end up being the steal of the draft.

They seem like the right picks if we stay where we are.

If they aren't both there though I could see us trading back one of our picks for maybe Lindsay and a Whitlock?

I have never seen either play but have spoken to a current recruiter.

He said: both should be AFL 200 games.

Reid - similar player to Hunter Clark with time and skills, size and courage but better running capacity and gets more of the ball than Clark. Not quick, not overly athletic, but a sure bet as a half forward mid, don't expect him to play from round 1, maybe 10 games would be a good result due to light frame and not overly strong.

Smillie - huge beast like Cripps, gets the ball, strong, bustling, good vision and skills, ready to play AFL from round one.
Down side is pace (or lack of) which might see him found out at AFL level and the fact he is bigger and stronger than others at U18 level.

His picks of the draft (outside Ashcroft) is #1 O'Sullivan #2 Lalor #3 Smith #4 Langford #5 Travaglia

He reckons if we get Travaglia at #7 or #8 he could end up in the top 2 or 3 from the draft.
Quick, tough, good on both feet, good overhead, ready from round 1 at half back and will move to a wing or midfield in a couple of seasons.

Not sure if Reid (to a lesser extent) or Smillie fit the style of play RTB has with hard running being the key.

Anyway, just what I've been told.

I would be happy with any two of those top 8 midfielders.
(I've seen phantom drafts that give us O'Sullivan, Smith, Langford, Draper, Smillie and Reid at pick 7 -- so who knows which we'll get?)
If Tauru or Armstrong (or any other non-mid) are picked early, then we get both of the two last mids.

But what do we do with pick 8 if they're not?
Scenarios:
1) We get to pick the very best of the non-mids. Tauru or Armstrong, or Travaglia. That still has to be great!
2) Or we get to pick next best of the mids, which would probably be Xavier Lindsay, which would also be excellent.
3) Or we swap the pick for two of GWS's first round picks -- which, though possibly unnecessary given scenarios 1) and 2), I find very intriguing.
There'll be so many attractive choices still on the table that we'd get two of them for sure with those picks.
I've seen several phantom drafts having Murphy Reid slipping way down to the end of round one. If we could pick him up there, along with some other future champion, that would be the IDEAL.

Whatever happens, it's going to be an exciting and enjoyable draft to watch.

Not keen on HBs or medium talls or wingers

We have those.

As Ross said ad nauseam

We need to build out a midfield

If we get Langford at #7, I'm splitting 8

If not Smilie and Reid

Trade F1 for pick 20 (shanahan)

Some years I get really into the draft… other years not so much. Unfortunately this is a not so much year.

I think I like Similie and Lalor but the senses is Lalor will be long gone

Why would you trade future 1st round pick for 20

Yeah personally I wouldn't trade F1. Hopefully it will end up 10+, but with how even the comp was last year a swing of a game or two could see us losing pick 5

Agree, huge risk.

Look at Carlton, gave up a future first to draft Liam Stocker. The future first ended up #4 and Stocker was delisted 4 years and 28 games later.

The reasons you’d trade out of next years first round

1/ you consider this years early second as equal to next years first round

2/ backing yourself to finish top 8

3/ speed up your rebuild by getting a kid in 12 months earlier.

4/ their is a player available in the second round you rated very highly ie/Hotton, Shanahan, Hynes or Trainor

Normally I wouldnt, but the Top 20 are fantastic prospects.

Have a look at Shanahan. Be very happy to snag him or even Taj Hotton (formerly top 5 rated) with our F1 and develop them together.
Hopefully we are deep into LDU next year, and he would join McCrae, Steele, Phillipou and Pick 7 (Langford , Smilie or Draper) all of a sudden we've got a contending midfield.

Pick 8 alot have us taking Armstrong....any thoughts??

I want the best available future players.
St Kilda pays experts to choose who they are.
They had better get it right.

My preference would be those currently holding picks 1 to 6 to second guess themselves into silly choices so we benefit mightily.
It must be a burden holding picks 1,2 or 3 for a couple of months. Plenty of time to war game yourself into a tizz.

Cal twomey has us taking travaglia and tauru
Disaster if that happens

Must get a mid
Any of the highly rated but not Reid

Bite the bullet and trade out 8 and next year F1 for 2
Go hard now

Get a future 2nd back if need be

Don’t get bit players

He does have all 7 picks before it's being mids, but there is a 0% chance we take two backs first.

Cal Twomey’s phantom drafts have been incredibly accurate over the past 4 years, I think he’s barely got a pick in top 20 wrong over that time (last year only missed Phoenix Gothard).

He would have some intel on travaglia for sure, we’ll be picking him. I still think north would be crazy not to trade down to select Tauru.

I hate them as much as anyone else, but I’ve seen this referenced a few times on here now and it’s wrong.

Carlton swapped F1 picks with the Crows.

Stocker + Pick 8 (2019) for Pick 4 (2019).

Really disappointing if we get two guys that are not pure mids

The bulls*** of yeah, he will transition into a mid is rubbish

90% of mids are drafted mids

50% of drafted flankers were u18 mids

Travaglia is a running back we have them and we need a midfield
Tauru is a 3rd tall back

Beware the bolter (especially one pumped up by the media)

I don't mind Tauru, but not keen on Travaglia.

I hope we are trying to get up in the order to North's second if we honestly think they're not taking Tauru and leaving us a top mid.

Pick 7 and F1 for Pick 2 and late pick
Take Draper and Pick 8 can be split
