Rookie Ruckman We Are Into
Into a SANFL ruckman Harry Boyd hailing from Shepparton VIC.
Stated we are potentially going to be drafting him for the rookie draft.

Re: Rookie Ruckman We Are Into
check out SaintsTVpod on youtube.
Nice 6 min discussion.
If you don't find it, here's the main points
First ruckman to win Magarey Medal since 2001
26 y.o.
198 cm
108 kgs
Avg hitouts 41
had 40+hitouts in 75% of his games
gets big disposal numbers
Seems to be more of a tap ruckman than RoMa
Can direct taps better
He could free up RoMa to patrol Fwd 50 and create big headaches for defenders
May get picked up by other clubs, although we have spoken to him

Maybe he can jump!

Re: Rookie Ruckman We Are Into
Not sure about this one. He'd want to come cheap.
Ok, haven't seen any footage of the bloke, but at 198cm, for a ruckman, he'd need to have a decent leap. Has he?
A great tap ruckman. Directs the ball really well. But, this is at SANFL level. I mean, if Will Snelling can share the Margary Medal , the standards can't be all that high these days. Or, putting it another way, check out Marshall's highlights from before we drafted him... he also tapped very accurately back then.
So, if this bloke's accurate tapping doesn't manage to translate into the AFL, then the question becomes, what's he like around the ground? Does he take marks? Does he provide us with an extra mid when the footy hits the ground?
But IMHO, most importantly, what would his recruitment (if it happens) do to Heath and Keelers' development?

Re: Rookie Ruckman We Are Into
I thought 198 was a bit short as well, however he won the BnF in the SANFL.
I don't think we'd pick him after delisting Campbell.
Club maybe hoping our other young rucks develop

Re: Rookie Ruckman We Are Into
I think they should have their own interchange so you can play two ruckmen if you wanted to.
As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”

Re: Rookie Ruckman We Are Into
His strength is his body giving him the ability to push and shove in the ruck contest (giving away frees) then continue as a very effective bullocking clearance player (so much like Marshall except without the football skills of Marshall including, by his own admission not being quick so needing the ball to come to him). Plays exclusively in the ruck for this reason - so not an option forward (see later). And he does not jump - it is all push and shove where 198cm will find him out at AFL level (noting his weight and bulk which is his asset in the SANFL)
In terms of SANFL domination, much the same as Hayes except Hayes was able to be deployed other than as a ruckman which was his strength at SANFL level (so playing forward where he was of limited ability to adequate at AFL level)
The question is, why an option to Draft at his age (as with Hayes) so previously was seen to have deficiencies at AFL level
What he did do was limit a young ruckman with potential to the Seconds (because he rucked the entire game hence “refer later” earlier) exclusively that young ruckman moving to North Adelaide - and a better option as an AFL prospect because tall and mobile (and competitive hence leaving Norwood because he was consigned to the Seconds)
Look at the competition around the AFL and you will see where the problem is - noting the honest (and taller) Campbell could not impact at AFL level
I note also that Heath has been promoted from the Rookie List (and hopefully they continue to work on his mobility noting he was impeded by Campbell as Boyd impeded at Norwood)
My opinion anyway - too short, too slow and deficient in the skills that identify an AFL ready ruckman, which he should be at his age
But very effective at SANFL level (and particularly on the smaller Norwood Oval and other smaller suburban grounds - and in the wet)

Re: Rookie Ruckman We Are Into
And just to add, our lack of options for “talls” is a problem
That said we need to ruck Heath on a full time basis developing as multi functional - so make to create a mismatch forward or release Marshall looking for that mismatch
This is where Keeler comes in, tall, athletic and with all the skills - but not of the height or weight to ruck other than to give Marshall a break - including to allow Marshall a mismatch forward
I see Keeler even on a (nominal) forward flank such is his athleticism and skill set - and creating a real problem for opposition sides (and from there he can glide around the ground causing mayhem)
So complimentary to Heath as he further develops (hopefully very early in 2025)
I see Keeler as a real asset given the development I expect to see
And this is what footy sides seek - unpredictability causing mayhem for opposition sides
Keeler has such potential

Re: Rookie Ruckman We Are Into
And their own interchange place
Two ruckman nominated by each team for each match.
They only get to interchange with each other.
Only ruckmen nominated by the team can contest centre bounces, throw-ins and ball ups.

Re: Rookie Ruckman We Are Into
We need to rookie Barron Trump 206cm
Daddy is allegedly very wealthy, will not tolerate opposition, could be very persuasive to have opposition ruckmen feign injury.
He could be a rookie "B" having been "born in the USA".

Re: Rookie Ruckman We Are Into
He would be the slowest AFL footballer in the country, nick named 'iceberg'. He is absolutely not a ruckman we want, I would much rather Tom Campbell who is much better around the ground.TheGreatZacsby wrote: ↑Wed 13 Nov 2024 12:13pm Into a SANFL ruckman Harry Boyd hailing from Shepparton VIC.

Didn't Campbell dominate in the 2s aswell?
Not sure why we got rid of him if we have nothing to replace him with?

Re: Rookie Ruckman We Are Into
There are quite a few very good ruckmen playing AFL that are not super tall. For instance, Paddy Ryder is only 197 cm but was an absolute gun.
Like many physical aspects of life, it is true to say about AFL ruckmen, "size isn't everything"!
"Any candidate for political office, once chosen for leadership, must have the will to take the wheel of a very powerful car, tasked from time to time to make a fast journey down a narrow, precipitous mountain road – and be highly skilled at driving. Otherwise, he is disqualified from the company of competent leaders."
