Mids mids mids mids mids.
Surely we can't stuff up something so obvious??

Agreed
But we will, we’ll overlook the obvious and take a chance on a HB like Travaglia or a medium defender like Tauru

Yes, but the people who made those decisions are no longer there.
Out first picks in the last three drafts have been Nasiah, Phillipou and Wilson. All three have bee excellent picks for where they were taken.
Nasiah in particular had the media roasting us.
No club gets all its picks right, but based on what I perceive we have gone from underperforming on our draft selections, to outperforming.
Picks 7 and 8 are likely to be difficult decisions as the more obvious picks are most likely to be gone by the time the Saints get to call out a player's name. If we are lucky a club or two will take a tall before our picks (ie If North trades done, but is still before our picks). If they all go mids, then our choices will be difficult ones. Hopefully one of the better mids is left for us, with the mix of qualities we need most.
Flying the World in comfort thanks to FF Points....

Didn’t Toce make those decisions?
SOS
He made decisions like
Jono Rourke pick 2
Dom Tyson pick 3
Lachie Plowman pick 3
Jarred Picket pick 4
Matt Buntine pick 5
Will setterfield pick 5
Caleb Marchbank pick 6
Paul Ahern pick 6
Liam Sumner Pick 10
Kristin Jacksh Pick 12
Aidan Corr Pick 14
About half or more of his swag of first rounders were busts!
Then he doubled down - and when he went to Carlton traded for them!!!

To be fair I looked at his height at 199cm and assumed.
Would hope Harris Andrews type.

Re: Hit this draft hard
If we get 5 mids in this draft as some people wish we might as well pack up and move to Tassie.
2 maybe 3 we Peckett but we need Ruck, KPF,KPD (Cole) and get the Sandy rookie or go to DFA as a few KPD and KPF in there.
Weideman is there at 76 games 77 goals as a swing man at 197cm and 27 who has rucked as well could be a go I know there is a knock on him but what players don't have some deficiency's.
He has said is might retire but if offers are there he might look at them its worth a try and cost us nothing except a list spot or rookie list him.

Re: Hit this draft hard
Puh-leeezzzzzzze Sainters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No more half back flankers!
No more medium defenders!
No more small defenders.
And no more small on-ballers!!!
We big bodied on-ballers. Who can also be a marking danger when up forward. (Smillie/Langford types.)
Then a couple more of them. (Martin's man Hynes.)
Then, a key defender. Doesn't need to be a high draft pick/big money consuming star. Those resources need to go to the 'match winners' - key forwards, big bodied on-ballers. Just needs to be able to quieten an enemy big forward. And we have plenty of blokes to whom he can give-off the footy. (Would be perfect if Cole could become that man.)

Re: Hit this draft hard
Lets do a trade, picks 7 & 8 and a two point(less) win over Carlton.
For picks 5 & 6
Guaranteed two of the best midfielders.
At pick 7 St Kilda gets the 8th best midfielder, the midfielder that John West and 7 other clubs rejected (chose) not to take.
Those who don't like losing meaningless games are the biggest losers.
A meaningless win over Carlton, how many hours did the inner glow of that win keep you warm.
I would rather see our picks 5 & 6 crushing Carlton for the next 15 years.

Re: Hit this draft hard
Never tank!!!
Building a winning culture is far far more important than moving one or two spots higher up the draft!
Even more so in such a (touted to be) even draft.
Besides, who would want to forego seeing the anguish of those Paperbaggers' fans?
Ok. Flip side of the coin. What gains to our list would we have actually made if we'd tanked for the recent the drafts since our recruiters finally got their act together (big time)...?
2023 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_AFL_draft
Darcy Wilson. (Rested or not.)
Harley Reid aside, (whom we were never going to get anyway), how many of those blokes would you have liked to have ahead of Darcy Wilson? My answer: none.
2022 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_AFL_draft
The Poe.
How many ahead of The Poe? Will Ashcroft? Maybe. Maybe not. But he was father n' son, so irrelevant to this discussion.
2021 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_AFL_draft
Nas.
How many ahead of Nas?
JHF prosably. But at pick 1, again, we were never going to get.
(For any fanbuoys of Darcy or Diacos, they were father n' son, so not relevant.)
Never tank!!!

JHF could not play half back as well as NWM. NWM stayed true to his draft club. NWM didn't need a public cuddle and a there there from the coach. JHF is not ahead of our champ.Dave McNamara wrote: ↑Sun 03 Nov 2024 10:38pm Never tank!!!

All true. Also, Naz hasn't cost us two first rounders in pretty decent drafts.Yorkeys wrote: ↑Mon 04 Nov 2024 12:10amJHF could not play half back as well as NWM. NWM stayed true to his draft club. You're relying on history to repeat! Seriously, which mids are likely to be available at our first pick? I agree that our priority should be mids, however will there be 2 gun midfielders different to what we already have, worth investing both picks 7 & 8?B.M wrote: ↑Fri 01 Nov 2024 4:52pm Agreed

Most pundits suggest there will be only one left by our pick, if North don't go with a midfielder.

Re: Hit this draft hard
Most definitely. High picks guarantee you have a better chance of getting who you want. Once you've selected, all the confounding variables come in to play.
It's never going to be an exact science, but recruiting is improving, overall. The one thing I rate at number 2, right behind who you select, is development and ongoing coaching/teaching.
We have one of the best developers in the business in Damian Carroll. It's why I believe our selections over the past 4 drafts or so are looking way better than those which preceded them.
I also support the appointment of "Biscuits" Bolton. A strong playing and teaching background has given him the foundation for a successful career as an assistant.
His interpersonal skills, or lack of them may have prevented him from making a successful transition to senior coaching. As Clint Eastwood said, "A man's gotta know his limitations."
I think Carroll's influence over the past couple of years is already gaining traction. Nas, Windy, Mitch, Pou, Darcy, the Hammer and Hugo are all progressing well.
Clubs like Geelong, the Swine's, Dorks, and 'Pies have a proven ability to improve players traded in, and those selected later in the draft.
We're in good hands. Dalrymple will get us the raw material. The rest is up to the coaches. I believe the immediate future is exciting. Don't be surprised to see us return to finals in 2025.
"There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about."

If we stay with picks 7 & 8 I'd love to get:-
Murphy Reid at 7 (he is one classy customer - think Nasiah)
Harry Armstrong at 8 (Max King and a developing Harry Armstrong could be very deadly up front)
Then at 32, add the best remaining mid

How do you know DC is a great developer of talent? Know him well??
I’ve known him for a long time, having played under him.
A nicer bloke you’d never meet!!! Very good leader and footy coach - especially at local level. Very professional!

Does that suggest DC may have a significant role in advising on who to draft?
(apologies for use of quote, it's just that I tend to lose track of what I'm commenting on if I don't)
