I saw a podcast appearance recently from Stocker where he clearly outlined the lingering disdain that he has for the coaching staff from his time at Carlton. Bolton is a strange appointment

If the AFL is anything like local footy, and from what I hear it is, the difference between being a head coach and an assistant is huge.

And like local footy every club and head coach will give different levels of responsibilities and autonomy to their assistants.

A lot of coaches early days will largely copy their mentors, especially if their mentors are successful. They'll do this until they have learned enough and have experienced enough to develop their own ways.

Problem is their mentors are usually from the past, and their methods are out dated.

As a coach or manager, you can't please everyone all of the time. Trying to make change as a new coach, will require making waves, and to get everone on the same page, young and old, intraverts and extraverts, and good to average players is difficult. Only one side ultimately gets it right each season.

Even when things are going well, there's always someone who has an issue, let alone when things aren't going to plan.

There is also the players ability to be coachable. Some players are good at it, some players aren't.

Sounds like Tuohy wasn't as coachable as he could have been at that stage of his career. It also sounds like Bolton wasn't the best communicator, and was possibly using out dated methods.

Bolton would then play 24 games for the Tasmanian Devils in the 2001 and 2002 Victorian Football League seasons.[3] At twenty-four, Bolton was appointed Captain-coach of North Hobart and he led them to the 2003 premiership. He won the Horrie Gorringe Medal that season.[4] His playing career was cut short by a hamstring injury in 2008.[5]

So he was a good local footballer? So what? I would imagine that everyone who has coached footy has played it at some level. Turns out Bolton played it at a lower level than 95% of the players he’s coaching ( given some will never play AFL even though they’re on a list)

Interestingly Chris Fagan never played AFL ( and was a good TFL player) but he has never tried to impose himself on a team. Obviously doesn’t have the same insecurities. Players and employees see right through managers who are trying too hard due to shortcomings of some type. Best to be transparent and own them I reckon

Absolutely. Combination of pure water, a climate to toughen the body and solid gene pool ? Hard to choose the best, being biased I'd go for Baldock and Hudson was just freakish. Probably silly to try to rank, just appreciate them all.

That's what lead to us doing what was/is/always will be the worst trade in VFL/AFL history. Ian Cervi for Billy Barrot. An 'incident' outside a primary school was the final straw for Yabbie.

Definitely cost us the 1971 flag. Very arguably cost us a three-peat in 72-73 too.

The Tuggers were able to handle things with Stewie (to the tune of two flags), so why couldn't we..?

I'm sure the burns survivor who first made this quip will take great comfort in knowing an anonymous poster on an obscure footy fan site is fighting the good fight for him.

I stole the line from my daughter, who is an ICU nurse. It was a commemt made by one of the patients. All the doctors, nurses, patients and other staff thought it was hilarious.

As my daughter said, it's that dark 'first/emergency responder' humor.

Maybe I'm warped, but I do not get offended easily, especially when someone on whose behalf you are 'outraged' found it funny.

For mine, The Doc, Stewie, Hudson (the most underrated of the champion full forwards - the competiton's all time highest career average of 5.64 goals per game played) and then Nick R.

And to be controversial, both Hart and Richardson were certainly very good players, but also, a bit overrated IMHO.

As far as nurses and ICU staff are concerned, it's understandable that they need a good laugh to be able to deal with the trauma every day.

What you need to learn about humour numbnuts, is that it's all about the timing. You were too keen. You can't just use a witty line from one situation and think it's going to be funny in other situations.
