Women's AFL

Post: # 2081698Post magnifisaint »

I didn't realise the women's side was so shitehouse. Does Dal Santo know how to coach?
Farken typical St Kilda! Mind you I don't know why I watched that last 5 minutes. It's complete crap.

Typical shallow misogynistic comment

Our men were shitehouse for 15 years from 1975 until 1990.

St Kilda had a decade of crap coaching and crap men's teams in the 80's

Our first 15 rounds for the men this year were crap

Comments are reasonable.
We started last year looking average but built as the season went on . Started this year well with three wins and a very healthy percentage.
Since then it's been 1 win and 8 losses , looking like we've gone backwards.
What's typical of the Saints is the shithouse performances at Moorabbin.
Giving our die-hard supporters who turn up nothing to cheer about this year .

I don't know if Dal Santo is any good at the coaching caper but what i do know is the Saints AFLW list needs a decent turnover in their off season.

There are way too many plodders in that team, on that list, but, it only matters if they want to succeed.

How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?

Harder to turn a list over in AFLW

Talent pool is nowhere deep enough to rebuild

I didn't watch today, but I have watched a few games this season.

One thing that has stood out to me is that they really struggle to perform in windy conditions. And it's been windy in most games, especially at Moorabbin.

The main part that has done my head in is they don't know, or haven't been coached in how to attack and defend in windy conditions.

When the wind has favoured a particular pocket or side of the ground they would continually use the wrong side of the ground playing into the opposition's hands, either wasting the breeze or helping the opposition by playing on the attacking side of the ground continually when kicking against it.

Since the girls are mostly going to play on suburban grounds they're going to have to get used to it and learn how to use it to their advantage, especially on their home deck.

Good coaches and players adapt to the conditions.

Hopefully you haven’t been watching when they boys have to play in a slight breeze then! 🫣

They have 6 decent players the rest are rubbish. Of the 6 a lot have missed games through injury and there is no depth. Trying to run the women's team on a shoe string and it shows onfield.

It's a disservice to the club.

You just confused him

Anyway..He's not interested in what the competition offers for female athletes and he's not interested in a discussion offering suggestions or solutions.

magnifisaint's headline ... 'Women's AFL'

It's complete crap.

Unfortunately the women's football is well short of acceptable standard, and the talent pool is definitely too thin.

The gap in many sports between men and women is quite narrow, women golfers for example, are highly skilled and only lack a little power on some of the longer holes.

I've got no problem with the AFL developing women's football, but lets be honest, the standard has a long way to go.

I was more to the point. I can't stand how they all follow the ball like a pack of U10s. When the ball is kicked to the forward line there is no-one there! The skills are terrible.

Men have been playing football for over 150 years. Over that time football has become second nature to generations of male players. Compare that to women and girls who have only been able to play the game seriously for about a decade. Give it time and stop comparing it to the standard of the men’s game. It’s not comparing apples with apples, far from it.

I can watch and enjoy womens cricket, 7's and sports like tennis, swimming, athletics but I can't get through a AFWL game, no matter how hard I try.

Over time the game will evolve but my gut feel is it is a decade away.

It is what it is and should be appreciated for that. Low skilled footballers trying to play a highly skilled game plan is a disaster. Keep it simple let them use their natural ability and it would be greater viewing.

It is trying to be something that it's not capable of being.
It's not a skilled game, so stop trying to play like the players are hihgly skilled.

Revert back to a positional game like footy used to be. Encourage more 1:1 contests around the ground.

It might be worth looking at implementing zones in the short term until the skills catch up.

As it stands, the players just go from pressure situation to pressure situation. There is no fluency to any play. Turnovers are extremely common and then there is no space to get clear, so it just becomes a congested mess.

It will get there, but I don't think it will take a decade. It only started 7 years ago and the girls that started highschool when it was a career they could aspire to have only just finished.

We are seeing good teams now averaging 50+ points a game (playing shorter games in worse conditions), so maybe another 5 years to have more young girls who know they can focus on it come through and maybe the overall level of quality will be lifted.

The coaches have a big part to play, some games have been ruined by overly defensive/negative game plans.

I don’t mind the idea of zones in the short term, a minimum and maximum amount of players should be allowed in each arc at all times.

Yep

And Dal is the biggest offender

Sunday Jesse Wardlaw got the ball behind the centre (should be i50

Kicked the ball, to three defenders- had zero players forward of the ball.

Because the ball moves so much slower in AFLW and the skill level is lower it’s easier to get numbers back

It’s like pre war footy or D Grade Ammos with todays team defence

No one can score!!!!

TAC Cup has a density rule - opens the game up

Why doesn’t the AFLW have it?!

That's really big of you...

It's great that men allowed women to have careers ...and enter the workforce ...and allowed women the right to vote.

All women thank you sincerely
