I Was Actually There : NickyWinmar’s Stand Against Racism

Post: # 2081672Post loris »

I know it’s a repeat of the TV program, but some on here may have missed it first time around.
It’s repeated on ABC TV Sunday 3 November at 9.30pm. It’s really worth watching - some great footy footage from that infamous day at Victoria Park when Nicky W proudly stood up against that baying Collingwood mob.

I was ACTUALLY there that afternoon, however like I’d say 99.9999% of us Saint supporters there, we didn’t see Nicky’s stance - we only knew about it after it came out in the papers a day later.
Most of us Saint supporters were trying to safely negotiate our way out of the ground. It wasn’t a safe place to linger around when playing Collingwood, especially after defeating them on their own dung hill😇

Or you can watch it on ABC Iview

Not only did I see Nicky Winmar lift his guernsey, I said to my mate, "That will become an iconic moment in Australian history."

No I didn't.

I was there with my Dad. I was 9. I was petrified.

Never saw Nicky lift his jumper, but I did have his number on my back that day.

It was my only ever visit to Victoria Park, so I didn’t really grasp the magnitude of the win until years later.

I was listening to the game on the radio in my parent's garage. Probably went through half a pack of smokes.

I listened to it in my garage too- and remember getting a bottle of bubbly to celebrate.

I was there with dad and my cousin in the outer.

I remember sticking to Collingwood fans with a couple of nearly physical altercations, but had no idea about the guernsey raise or the racial abuse of Gilbert & Nicky.

First I heard would have been the Sun, World of Sport or Harry Beitzel, don’t recall.

I do remember a newspaper report stating Winmar raised his guernsey saying the win showed guts, which has proven incorrect.

I had no clue about the significance of the action at that point in time.

I was there as well and sorry I didnt see it but Gilbert McAdam played well kicking 5 goals I think.
As I was bagging on the Tin advertisement on the ground side and giving it to the Collingwood supports they flung me over onto the ground just before the end of game and wouldn't let back over.
The blue coats were coming for me (security) just as the siren sounded so even one on ground so it was good.
I remember going home it took me quite a while on the train and I had to hide my saints scarf other wise get beaten up until I got to Flinders street and on the Glen Waverley train but what a great day.

Was there with my cousin and Aunt. Enjoying the win the coppers suggested we wait 5 minutes before we leave hence saw the famous jumper lift.
Only time walked out of Vic park with a win ( only went 7 times) over Collingwood. Done think we ever played them there again as got good crowds for a few years against them .

Had been to vic park a few times before that game and built up a hatred towards these feral reprobates
This game I was unwittingly invited into the Collingwood members area by a work colleague (free beer). By half time I was I asked to leave. I couldn’t let their crap go unchallenged I returned to an area at the other end to see us turn the game around and win.
Tbh I can’t remember seeing Elvis lift his kit I may have seen it but after what has been made of it and the multiple images saturating my old brain it’s hard to separate the both
Needless to say I was never invited back to the flea ridden skunk members area
Without a doubt the worst supporters in the league and will argue that to my grave

As a sidenote, so sad to see memory go there

One of the very few games I attended at Collingwood's home ground. All I can remember is the abuse coming all match from the Collingwood supporters. I was standing only 5 metres away near the fence and had a clear view of Nicky pulling his guernsey up and point to his stomach. This was after the Pies supporters called him every racist name they could possibly think of. At the time to be honest the only thing I thought was good on you Nicky telling them you are black, so what. Of course that only infuriated them more.

I was there and remember Winmar lifting the guernsey and pointing to his skin.

What is often forgotten about the game was Gilbert McAdam's role. He kept Winmar calm all the way through the game, was constantly in Winmar's ear during the game. He also had an almighty game himself, didn't he kick 6 that day playing on a wing?

I remember I gathered with about 15 other Sainters on the wing in the dying moments of the game, singing the song and also singing "Nicky Winmar walks on water" as we taunted the Collingwood ferals.

What I found surprising was that the filth women interviewed all had teeth,

And what I found unbeliveable was when that filth woman said that they now loved Cuz. bulls***.

I was there too, and if I recall correctly, it was one of the first times we had to get a get a ticket from a booking agency

Great game but I copped a few death glares when I applauded Michael Christian getting knocked out by Spud (pretty sure Mr Christian is still making us pay at the MRP)

I never saw it either, was too busy trying to navigate my way towards Vic Park station.

Was standing in the outer that day, between wing and southern flank.

Had no idea what was happening with Winmar after the game, but definitely happy we won.

It was one of my only times in the outer, and drinking beer as an adult, after spending my youth behind the goals with the cheer squad.

The men's toilets were really quite disgraceful, As I recall, just approaching the 'facility', was required to walk through a 'yellow river' of piss and slush, not ideal with desert boots. Then the urinal itself was just a concrete wall. And there were feral bogans in there.

Racism is not acceptable, but really, there were a lot of things not acceptable at that place.

I was also there as an 10 year old closer to the 50m line opposite the Winmar end. Only time I visited Victoria Park, it was absolutely hostile but I distinctly remember being with a number of fellow saints fans.

We knocked them off in a final at Waverley in 92. I remember thinking after this win, can’t wait until plugger returns as the win put us 3 wins from 4 games. I thought we’d be a huge chance to win the flag in 93.

This win is in my top 10 favourite wins as a supporter.

and that's the bottom line
