He should have just given the ball to Dockerty, not had the biscuit, and been smart enough to not say what he was thinking when asked.

Haven’t the club just hired Bolton as an assistant?

He sounds like a bona fide toxic twat.

Disagree.

It would have been a much better move to have given the biscuits to Dockerty and not taken the ball.

Sounds like Watty Scotters.

Highly rated assistant who tried to be the high end tough guy as coach and it back fired.

Similar story with David Noble.

Let’s hope he’s learned his lesson.

Support coaches are hired for technical intelligence not charm. Although Bolton has probably learnt humility and that AFL players are different from school kids. Paid more for a start. Cuddly Brendan?

So what would his response have been if Tuohy was out on the piss?

Bolton sounds like a guy I work with. 😫

Thank god I’m in the close out stage and I won’t have to deal with this dick again.

The absolute worst. I knew Melbourne were sunk in that first preseason when someone asked Neeld whose surprised/impressed you the most so far…

He answered words to the effect of… I don’t want to commit to an answer!!??

The Geelong trait of being arrogant arseholes has certainly rubbed off on him.

Tuohy is a ripper

Not whining, just recounting a story that shows how much of a dick Bolton must be

That's life .....some people get on some don't
some employees are loved, some are mistreated,
just like opinions on this site, how some players become "whipping boys"

I guarantee that there'll be other players coached by Bolton who will say he's a good bloke.

Don't think much of players coming out bagging people, the way Zac Touhy has done, calculated solely to sell their new book.

It'll end up on the remainder tables outside Dymocks for $2 before long!

Remember that was 8 years ago. Hopefully he’s evolved a bit from then. Importantly toohey reckons he’s a wonderful technical coach. As an assistant not sure a whole lot of this stuff will be relevant. He wouldn’t have survived otherwise

As I understand it he’s a footy nerd who knows the game inside out. Personal skills aren’t his strength. Hence a perfect assistant but not the main guy. Plus he will bring intel

I heard similar stories when Pagan was at Carlton. Being a hard arse over ridiculous stuff. All it did was turn the entire playing group against him and surprise, surprise, Carlton were shite under him.

It's weird. Guys like Watters, Neeld, Bolton, as first time senior coaches came in swinging like tough guys and they all failed big time. Then you have Craig McRae who takes the positive relationship building approach and gets himself a flag with a playing group that had appeared to have stagnated

It's fine to set standards, but you need to build relationships at the same time and being a complete dick over trivialities only gets the people around you thinking you're a d**khead. At that point, you've already lost them

Really good post.

I think it also really highlights what an important skill it is simply to be able to read the room and respond accordingly.

It’s absolutely not a cardinal sin to go into a situation and overreact, or have a joke go down like a lead balloon or cultivate a relationship/s in a really unhealthy or unproductive way.

The better coaches and leaders in general seem to be able to to see it when it’s not working and work through the challenges.

You look at a guy like RTB who has always had the reputation of being a hard a$$ and you can see that sometimes he opts to encourage/motivate/comfort a player as opposed to always cracking skulls.

There’s a lot to be said about versatility

Neeld and Watters totally disrespected the senior core of players the first day they walked in the door. A fatal error and unthinkably bad management. Both had been under the guidance of Mick Malthouse. I suspect he gave them some poor advice on how to approach their first senior coaching gigs.

After Lyon shot through in his first gig at the Saints, the club no doubt should have gone for a more experienced coach than Watters, considering we were weren't that far off finals then. Respect is a two way thing, and I think a few of the senior core of players didn't show enough respect for the new coach either, so it was never going work out- maybe the same went for Neeld
