Re: Brad Crouch?!
Does it really matter if he's a rookie, or if it's one of the others already on the rookie list? Surely we don't have to elevate them all this year.

Re: Brad Crouch?!
Nick name: Benjamin Button.
Seems a farcical situation even in the context of the sureal opaque labyrinth that is the AFL equalisation mantra.
Anyway hope his development as a rookie progresses nicely. I guess a lot can be forgotten if you miss 22 games or so. Mentor TBA.

Re: Brad Crouch?!
Can someone please explain to me why we need to re-draft Brad as a rookie? How does it benefit us? I don't get it.

It will be contract/cap related if so.Selhurst Saint wrote: ↑Fri 01 Nov 2024 9:01am Can someone please explain to me why we need to re-draft Brad as a rookie? How does it benefit us? I don't get it.

Re: Brad Crouch?!
He is not playing.
He is owed 'next year's salary' due to triggering his contract for another year. I assume that's why he is now a 'non-playing' Rookie.
There appears to be some financial gurus on this site who can explain.

Re: Brad Crouch?!
Yeah, as other people have noted he has a contract for next year, so from his position he could sit on the list and collect his salary and just never play (if as rumoured he is completely stuffed).Selhurst Saint wrote: ↑Fri 01 Nov 2024 9:01am Can someone please explain to me why we need to re-draft Brad as a rookie? We are committing to redraft him as a rookie at (I assume) his current salary to shift him from our full list to the rookie list, which frees up a full list spot for us.
Given he has accepted being delisted, I assume there would be some commitment from the club in place to retake him as a rookie, so we couldn't just back out of it without some kind of financial penalty.

Re: Brad Crouch?!
What the go with redrafting him?
He’s either on the list and can play
Or
Off the list and he can’t play

Re: Brad Crouch?!
We did a similar thing with Jarryd Allen in 2010. His body was done, I think it was a hip or back injury, but he had a multi year contract.
We delisted him at the end of 2009, then rookied him in 2010 so he could see out his contract rather than the club paying him out early.
The only difference being that our salary cap was maxed at the time, whereas now, we're just meeting the minimum.

Re: Brad Crouch?!
My understanding of Brad Crouch's situation is that the club is merely moving him to the rookie list because they are obliged to continue to pay him until his contract expires in 2025.
Technically he can be brought back in to play next year, but it sounds like his body is stuffed, and won't play again.
We will know more when training resumes and whether or not he turns up for the pre-season sessions.

Re: Brad Crouch?!
Ah that makes sense. Instead of paying 100% now we pay him over a 12 month period. I guess we immediately put him on the LTI list and free up the rookie spot.Beno88 wrote: ↑Fri 01 Nov 2024 2:17pm We did a similar thing with Jarryd Allen in 2010. Re: Brad Crouch?!
Isn’t he taking up a rookie spot
The idea is just to open up a senior list spot
But why not just pay him out??

Re: Brad Crouch?!
Odd
Have we maxed out the salary cap for 2024?
Or
Are we concerned in not meeting the minimum payments for 2025?
Isn't there a long term injury list?
Can't work out why we just don't pay Brad out and thank him for his service. If he is done move on.

Re: Brad Crouch?!
I don't know how the LTI list works, so can we put a player on there this early?
Moving him to the rookie list gives us an extra draft pick (because I believe we get one for each available full list spot), so that is why this is happening now.
Is it true he is completely cooked? I know all we have is rumours because the club isn't exactly going to confirm it, but maybe he doesn't want to be paid out because he is holding out on the extreme long shot that he gets his body right and can get a game later next year?

Re: Brad Crouch?!
Still not sure why he needs to be on the list if he’s not playing?
He could simply be paid out - and that money is still counted in our cap because he’s contracted
Leaving a spot open for a rookie
Every spot on an AFL list is worth gold - until it’s not.
Ie/Rowan Marshall Rookie pick 10
Or is he planning on playing? At Sandy??
I don’t understand the situation

Re: Brad Crouch?!
Without knowing anything about this situation, could it be as simple as :-
it's Crouch's wish to have his money spread out over 2 financial years rather than receiving a lump sum (by being paid out now) in this financial year?

Re: Brad Crouch?!
Can do that without the complexity of rookie draft manipulation though? Just a mutually agreed payment schedule?

Perhaps being paid out could be a cash flow issue for the club?B.M wrote: ↑Sat 02 Nov 2024 10:44am Still not sure why he needs to be on the list if he’s not playing?

Perhaps the club perceives he can add value such as mentoring young players?
If he is being paid not to pay, perhaps the club want something in return?
Perhaps he’ll work as a pseudo assistant coach?
Just speculation, but if he’s going to be paid regardless, and is respected, why not get some value?

Re: Brad Crouch?!
You mean he realises that some liar in Canberra wants to take 47% of all that lump sum and squander it.
A rookie real estate agent would get less income than an AFL footballer and have lower marginal tax bracket.

Re: Brad Crouch?!
Good point.
Looking at the broader picture however, what I don't get, is, with so many 'deductions' available to them, why do high income earners whinge about the tax rate? For them, the tax rate is pretty much irrelevant.
And for anyone who may disagree, all I can say, is to see if Kerry Packer's old accountant is still practising.
And as for the club paying Brad his full dues, well if so, then he won't have the free time to work a full time job on top of his commitments to St Kilda. That said, I wouldn't want us to go all hard line/'getting our pound of flesh' on him. Hopefully an arrangement can be reached which is fair to all parties, and leaves neither with a 'bad taste in their mouth'.

Re: Brad Crouch?!
Agreed. He’s been the epitome of an excellent free agent. Cost us no draft capital and played very very well over a long time. Body failed him in his final year which is hardly surprising given the way he played. Loved his contribution.

Re: Brad Crouch?!
I can tell you categorically that if you are a high income earner (classified as >$180K pa) but earn that income from salary and wages then the tax minimisation options available to you are proportionally the same as someone in any other income bracket. The good old days of using Trusts and FBT-able expenses to reduce your income are long gone. Different if you own a business but not markedly so.Dave McNamara wrote: ↑Sun 03 Nov 2024 11:16pmGood point.

Re: Brad Crouch?!
There must be some sort of cap benefit/concession to us in choosing to redraft him as a rookie rather than paying out his contract for next year in full and cutting him. Either that or they think he’s a small chance of actually playing.
