Local Councils and Club Memorabilia in new rooms

Post: # 2081140Post CURLY »

Off season thread but a hot topic amongst local sporting clubs.

We’ve all walked in a local sports club social/club rooms and wandered around looking at honour boards, photos and trophy cabinets. With the building of new pavilions this could all be a thing of the past. Local councils have in a majority of cases forbidden the displaying of club memorabilia in newly built rooms. The reason these are for the entire community not just the clubs that inhabit them for large periods of each year.

Thoughts

Just reinforces my long held view that Councils ought to be abolished. What a ridiculous disgrace!

Sporting Clubs don't understand the game, you need to bribe Councillors like developers do.

What I do know for a fact is that at the Club my 3 sons played at, and where each of them has their names on the Honour Board across their playing careers both in cricket and football, the Oval surface was relaid by Council and the antiquated Club rooms were replaced by a two story facility funded by Council and the State government following on a tender process where there were only 2 tenderers

The building was prefabricated and is more than acceptable

However, the front of the building is window (with a balcony) with the rear accomodating the bar and rooms for community use, each with a doorway for access plus the male and female conveniences (the change rooms at the lower level). Plus there is the access from the stairs to the first floor function centre

The side walls are only of a certain length, the result being there are no walls of sufficient dimension to accomodate the Honour Boards which are now in storage

The story is the Club are looking to put a recurring image of a Board onto a wall, the image recurring so each Honour Board in turn and the size to accomodate the wall dimensions

The old building was configured to one long wall at the rear which accommodated the Honour Boards

The boys would prefer the Honour Boards remain, obviously, but the “businessness” of the walls is such that they just do not fit - and it does depreciate from the character

But then you have the facilities you enjoy now versus the old facilities which were dated and in all facets

And the function rooms and office rooms are used by community which was not the case previously

Mind you, back in Adelaide, due to a benefactor who contributed 50% of the costs on the basis the Club and Council provided the remainder, the cost running to the millions, the History section is the attraction describing the history of the Club and its players - so you are on the walls forever

So Council was the minority provider of funds - and issued the permits

Councils are just an unnecessary third level of Government.

Who in their right mind would be against sports memorabilia being displayed in a sports pavilion.

I repeat, it is not being opposed it is the ability given the reconfiguration of what is being built including the requirements to add community facility and ambience

And these facilities are funded by Councils and also in some instances State governments and in other instances by the Federal Government (sports rorts anyone?)

Many of the rooms have plenty of wall space for displaying memorabilia.

I don’t think any Councils would be instructing as to what can go on the walls

The opening post referred to the majority of Councils

In the instance I do know about the reconfigured now upstairs entertainment area walls do not accomodate the Honour Boards of the football and cricket clubs

There are however photos and premiership sashes on the walls

So who are the Councils dictating what can go on the walls?

Given they have been referred to as they have

It's definitely a council law that doesn't allow memorabilia.

So now it is down from "majority" to "a Council law".

So which Council, because I would suggest that any community pressure would see them renege on such an edict.

Ok I will let the clubs know that aren’t allowed too. Maybe leave his number.
