Ethan Phillips

Just delisted from Hawks. My hawk obsessed mate tells me he’s a good size (198cm) moves well and should be AFL ready. Reckons he’s above VFL standard. Is a backman

I see hawks delisted him today. Wonder if we’ll give him a go? Sounds like he might be worth a try. Interested in the thoughts of those on here who watch far more VFL than I do

Hope we look at him and Grainger-Barras. Don't know how they will go, but they are both young enough and being squeezed out of the Hawks backline isnt a knock on them given who they brought in

He had a medical with the club yesterday. I dont know a lot about him other than watching his highlight vids, he is a good intercept marker, not quick but reads the ball in the air well. I think Id prefer Tomlinson at CHB but Phillips being younger might be the way we go.

It just feels like we are continually going through other clubs cast offs, the competition will start calling us the 'bin chickens'. It would be nice to get the list to a point when fringe players we push out out are worth something to other clubs trade wise. But I guess the environment has changed since the AFL brought in the SSP function.

No way I want Tomlinson. He’s been in system long enough and shown he’s not good enough. Phillips worth a go I reckon. My Hawks friends were stunned when Frost went down in elimination final that Phillips didn’t come in

Maybe the Club is looking at him to eventually replace Howard?

Following on Ethan Phillips -

After deciding not trade for Port Adelaide ruckman Ivan Soldo during the AFL trade window, the Saints have also shown an interest in Western Australian ruckman Lachlan Blakiston, according to the West Australian.

The 26-year-old, standing at 204cm, has been one of the dominant ruckman in the WAFL for East Fremantle averaging 16 disposals and 33 hitouts a match in 2024.

Given Hawthorn have recruited Battle at a price that gives us tier 1 compo, and paid a bounty of picks for a 29 year old Barass, I’m guessing the two young Hawks backend are not much chop.

Yeah maybe, I don't know much about them but getting pushed out by two good players doesn't mean they are bad, just not as good as those two currently.

Grainger-Barras was pick 6 and is still only 22. Getting cut by the Hawks isn't a great sign given he is a high pick and still young, but he must have had potential and getting cut might be the kick up the bum he needs.

Don't know anything about Phillips but he sounds interesting at least to have a look at

Worth a go. Young and could be moulded still.

Tomlison is an average player that is now old. Old average players don't improve. They get slower or injured.

Can't see Tomlinson improving.
Phillips might.

At least 2 outlets are saying we're looking at Ethan Phillips.

Trade periods are always interesting

If I remember correctly the biggest knock on Phillips was his speed, or severe lack of it

Should be more than 2 outlets as he has had a medical. So they should all say that we are "looking" as him.

Looking is not the same as taking though.

He would be solid depth.

Good intercept mark, in the slow side and offensively is nota good kick like Battle is.

'At least' indicates it could well be ESPN, Al Jazeera, The Barcelona Express, New York Post, UK Daily Mirror...

I recall a Power guy called Logan Austin that we had for a season, he might've been slow too.
Hugh Goddard was said by some here that he had the turning circle of the Queen Mary.

Hope Ethan's speed or lack of, is a myth

I don’t reckon Battle was that quick or a great kick. He was passable at both facets. I recall quite a few clangers from Josh and also recall quite a few kicks smothered because he was too slow getting boot to ball. He had a nice technique though but wasn’t an overly long kick. His strength was reading the play and marking. Footy smarts which is probably the best asset a footballer can have

There's a reason the Hawks delisted him. He couldn't get a game even before they recruited Battle & Barrass. A pass for me.
