I draw the line at jokes about pedophilia, sexual abuse and violence. Having dealt with the consequences and effects on clients in a professional capacity, there is a clear line, IMHO.
Never normalize sexual abuse and violence, not even in the guise of humor. If you've ever been a victim of these vile acts, know a family member or friend who has, or had to assist a victim in their recovery, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.
Fortunately, most people haven't, but I'm sure many don't realize how common and unreported these incidents are.

Re: GWS Players in the gun. AFL has gone mad.
Sam McClure (is he a good source or just a gossiper)
says that a young player of Ghanian heritage wanted to dress as Django (slave in that movie)
Asked 4 other players who are coloured, if they object (2 indigenous) prior to event, they said it's fine (allegedly).
Player did a skit- wrestling with another player (maybe playing a slave owner)
Disclaimer: I'm simply quoting McClure's allegation on X

Re: GWS Players in the gun. AFL has gone mad.
- Josh Fahey dressed as a former NRL player and Jake Riccardi as a taxi driver. In the course of the skit, Fahey simulated inappropriate acts on a sex doll. Riccardi was not involved in that part of the skit.
- Toby McMullin and Cooper Hamilton simulated the September 11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre in costume related to that event.
- Harvey Thomas dressed as a particular professional sportsman and Joe Fonti as a girl, acting inappropriately during their skit.
- Connor Idun and Lachie Whitfield enacted a scene from the movie Django Unchained characterising slavery.

I'm told you are, or were, a lawyer, Saynta. I don't know if the criminal law was your speciality, but I reckon you'd have a reasonably good grasp of what I'm talking about.saynta wrote: ↑Thu 17 Oct 2024 6:39pmYep, Poor choice and not at all funny.Nick DalSanto Claus wrote: ↑Thu 17 Oct 2024 6:32pm I draw the line at jokes about pedophilia, sexual abuse and violence. Oh no Curly and others, you jumped in too early and now you have to stand by your defence of jokes about sexual assault as PC gone mad or whatever.

Seriously you know exactly why we are frustrated at this. FFS two players came dressed as movie characters. If you don’t think dressing as Pee Diddy was taking the piss out of him you need help.

Re: GWS Players in the gun. AFL has gone mad.
Curly… this isn’t new.
Why should AFL players get a pass at something the rest of adjusted to long ago.
I’ve been in healthcare for 17 years… this was never allowed. I’d never post a joke like this on FB - 100% it could cost me my job.
Police officers, teachers, chemists, librarians, taxi drivers, retail people… none could get away with this stuff.
Maybe the issue is that a certain segment of the population that has been coddled for too long and always been told how great they are whilst the admin look the other way for their discretions, suddenly have to play ball like the rest of us.
I’m ok with that too

Re: GWS Players in the gun. AFL has gone mad.
I don't even think you understand why you are frustrated. You seem to think the sky is falling on comedy, but in your last message you got so close to why it isn't and then just moved on when I tried to help you with that last little step. I also wasn't the one who jumped in to defend people I don't know before we knew what actual they had taken.
I know it's easy to make up things to be mad at (Diddy isn't mentioned) but did you read the AFL article detailing the issue? The people involved in the movie scene was acknowledged as "very complex" and got the lightest punishment. The real issue was the depictions of sexual acts and terrorism.
I guess if you ignore them you don't need to acknowledge that they might be inappropriate, but remember the standard you walk past is the standard you accept, so by again failing to address the actual issue what you are saying is you don't see anything wrong with it.

Absolutely reduliculous.
RiP comedy any any sense of humour. Very sad.
Yes some were in bad taste. Some probably should have had something said to the player.
Private party, closed to outsiders.
How can it possibly end up with missed matches.

CURLY was there. CURLY knows 'exactly' what happened. CURLY also 'knows' how everyone should have responded if they saw anything...and he 'knows' how people should be feeling.
CURLY doesn't believe that any staff present during the time actually witnessed the acts and they were ONLY offended afterwards when they watched the cctv footage.

I don’t think it’s hard to grasp that re-enacting Jarrod Hayne raping someone as a skit/joke isn't going to go down well at a work event when your employer finds out.
Pretty sure that’s been a no-no for a long time now.

Re: GWS Players in the gun. AFL has gone mad.
I don't agree with the suspensions. I think they're excessive... but y'know...I thought Webster copping 7 weeks was excessive.
I think in the long run, there are always some players who have to bear the brunt and be made examples of. I think this is one of those occasions.
It's what happens when people ( I'm not talking about corporations but the community/real people) decide there needs to be change, and of course you'll initially get some over correction.
People reluctant to move with the times will resist and be outraged... but again... what really fascinates me is that the bloke who started this thread pretends to know all the facts...and pretends to know who the people are who complained (and their personal circumstances in life) and how these people should be feeling.

Curly is entitled to his opinion and whilst I don’t agree with it, he’s expressing it in an objective way. This shouldn’t get personal.

Trust me I’m not worried.
What I am worried about is where we are are headed when people are selecting when or if they will be offended.
I am sure those that live in imaginary worlds don’t see how ridiculous this is.

Re: GWS Players in the gun. AFL has gone mad.
No-one is selecting when or if they are offended, they are telling you they are and you aren't listening.
No one cares how offensive you are in your private life, just don't expect that everyone should like it if they hear it.
Talk about living in an imaginary world, if you were genuinely worried about people being offended you would engage with the topic rather than just ignoring it. Go out and actually see live comedy and you will see jokes about a lot of things by people who actually know how to navigate the line, rather than sitting on your couch complaining that you can't say anything anymore.
There is a great Aussie song from last year that I think about a lot that starts:
I had invented a type of guy
That I couldn't hold on to in real life
And he made me so mad
That I lost my mind
Nothing is as bad as you think, just engage with it rather than assuming everyone is out to get you.

Re: GWS Players in the gun. AFL has gone mad.
So you admit that you're out of touch with changing community attitudes. That's understandable
I know what world you'd like to be living in. The 1960's or 1970's. Sorry... you can't go back in time.I am sure those that live in imaginary worlds don’t see how ridiculous this is.
What do you reckon happened to some vulnerable or naive girls who met footy players and blokes with high testosterone levels mixed with a bit of a night out on the alcohol? What do you reckon happened on some footy trips? Or in some discos and nightclubs?
I'm not talking about violent sexual assaults or rape. The other stuff. The touching. The groping. The language. The innuendo.
Do you reckon all of them deserved it? They should have stayed home right? Or they shouldn't have worn a skirt that night. Should have been in a ballroom gown...right?
Remember how Jordan De Goey nearly got traded from Collingwood? Was his behaviour seen as acceptable in the year 2021? In 1980 it would have been.
Now... I'm not accusing you of anything...or saying you condone any of this behaviour...but just want to highlight that what you believe was a 'joke', is part of the reason women have had to deal with sexual harassment (and worse) for so long. Yes mate!
Wolf whistles and stares and men talking about their desires was a daily occurrence for some women. Even touching was commonplace.
'Masculinity' was celebrated. Trump was still doing it 10 years ago. He was boasting about how he thought he was 'allowed to grab women by the pussy'
https://www.vox.com/2016/10/7/13205842/ ... ding-women
Remember when every 2nd or 3rd film we watched from the 1960's and 1970's you'd see a man 'take what they wanted'. Again...I'm not talking about sexual assault or rape, but you'd see them grope a woman or forcibly kiss them on the lips? Even James Bond used to do it didn't he?
The films mirrored what was acceptable in society. Men mirrored what they saw from their role models and those role models at home were their fathers and grandfathers.
If it happened to a young girl or woman in real life back then ...no one went to report it to police... A touch or feel or grope was something they had to put up with.
It was seen in society as totally normal. Men and testosterone.
However...What do you reckon happened behind closed doors to some women in their own homes by their husbands? Men believed they were entitled.

Re: GWS Players in the gun. AFL has gone mad.
Again you're missing the point. A person has decided to search for something to be offended by. Do you think they would have done the same if it was a local sports team a teachers break up or god forbid a female netball club.St Dave wrote: ↑Thu 17 Oct 2024 11:59pmNo-one is selecting when or if they are offended, they are telling you they are and you aren't listening.

We live in a world where songs like Darling it's Cold Outside in USA STATES have been banned while My Neck My Back and Slam that Arse remain top sellers in the same state we have serious issues. TV shows that kids watch like Family Guy have an old guy chasing a young boy around for sex and other offensive topics. we again pick and choose whats offensive.
Now for Scollop come down to a local sports club one that has both genders of football and also netball and if you will quickly see the double standards of what is deemed offensive and by who.

Re: GWS Players in the gun. AFL has gone mad.
Except we aren't talking about sending players to jail. We are talking about people making jokes in a workplace at another workplaces staff function.
This isn't the state punishing people, this is an employer punishing their employees. In my job I wouldn't get a few weeks off, I would be out on my arse, these players are experiencing a privilege that the majority of the public wouldn't get and people are still rushing to say they are being treated too harshly.
