Lots of professional comedians have made similar jokes. People get offended by comedy and they leave a bad review. Footballer offends someone for similar and they get fined 10’s of 1000’s and get suspended??

OK, of course rhetorical motherhood statements rule. Assume the worst, smite quickly and fair enough, can't be too cautious about possible false witnesses.

So then why is it for the AFL Secretariat to be the secret morality police. Are there not independent regulatory agencies to deal with the allegations. The Club that employs the guys dobbed in by the crusaders for good who only want what's best for society? Does GWS have an active role.

So what is your line for too far?

I would probably say that professional joke tellers might have a bit more nuance and be a bit more likely to not be offensive (walk up to the line without crossing it) than a bunch of footballers at a party.

But also cancel culture leads me to believe that comedians who make those 'similar jokes' get cancelled and never work again, so at least the footballers get to keep their jobs...

Are you actually surprised that a public entity (in the entertainment space too) would want their employees to not offend some portion of the community?

Like it or not lots of kids look up to footballers as role models, the AFL doesn't want those role models (who get paid a lot of money to be in the public eye) to be turning off potential viewers.

More on topic, what's your line for the sanctions being appropriate?

It was a private function. What has it got to do with anyone else? Wouldn't have been a problem 2 or 3 years ago. The world is going nuts.

Its a private function, but also a work function, and their workplace has a code they stand by.

A little part from an article I read that might help clarify the upset...

“But any kind of behaviour including jokes that are sexist or about sexual violence are not harmless,” she continued.

“They normalise harmful attitudes toward women, minimise violence and reinforce harmful stereotypes. They contribute to a culture where violence against women is accepted and thrives.”

Initially I was kind of with Curly…
But the more I’m understanding about this… the reality is if you’re in a public area you’re in a public area and you have to stand by the code of conduct that we as a society are moving towards.

Yes it’s a private function but if there’s members of the public there e.g. workers, you’re really rolling the dice making the type of jokes that Dud is alluding to above.

If that’s your sense of humour and it really is jokes… that’s fine but the setting for it is in your home or the car or something. Somewhere clean of unwanted ears

Being a healthcare professional, a lot of my colleagues have very very dark senses of humour. One in particular likes to say very outrageous, shocking things to wind people up. He wouldn’t say it in public/meetings etc… only to the people that really understand that it’s a joke and won’t be offended.

That’s the world and IMO rightly so

Most AFL kids are often as immature outside footy as they are mature inside. Even Roo was involved with a photo or something in USA back in the day, and whether it was true or his fault or not it doesn't look good for the club by the many prudes who are always looking to throw some s***.

If there was issues regarding misogony at the Giants thingy you can blame the club for not educating their players, outside that, no matter what crap the kids come up with shouldn't shock anyone, surely, we know they'll be running amok. I just hope our players can have some fun without doing anything that attracts the media sharks, but most things wouldn't be any worse to me than a missed tackle, mark or kick during the playing season.

We can see that if they did a skit about how words/actions could have consequences might have been too far for you, but you never properly said Curly, what's your line for when sanctions would be appropriate?

See here's the thing everywhere you turn there is something that pushes the boundaries sometimes oversteps. TV, Facebook, Instagram , Tik Tok the music videos. As I live in the real world and things aren't black and white I don't get outraged on behalf of others. I defend and look after but I don't act offended on their behalf. I also don't tell people what they should and shouldn't be offended by and I most definitely don't expect young people to make sound and rational decisions all the time.

But isn’t the argument that the person that witnessed it was offended. If it’s a joke about sexual violence or offending against children where the complainants (so to speak) have experienced it…
I think that’s completely justifiable.

It’s not illegal by any means but the players put themselves in that position by making those jokes in a public area. I wouldn’t want to overreact to this by any means… but it is absolutely worth a free kick

The staff member went through the CCTV though. What if the players that were out of season and at a break that the club wouldn't have organized said nothing while they had them in the room. Then when they left told jokes that they were all comfortable with?

If this was say a house party and a girlfriend was bothered and complained to the club… a tap on the shoulder and be careful is in order but look, you get sprung in public you get sprung in public and have to own it.

I agree in that a wouldn’t be calling for heads to role here by any means but to these guys have to get the memo too. Those types of jokes are not ok in a public setting. Society doesn’t want that.

If I did that, I’d get the sack. I’m not going to sit here and say I’ve never made an inappropriate joke… but you haven’t heard any of them.

This outcome here is very very predictable as it’s not really ambiguous about whether or not it’s ok.

In a discussion about going too far with words and actions, and those are the words that Curly takes issue with.

It's actually a disgusting thing to say and the comment is basically scare mongering and trying to make more of this incident.

See here's the thing everywhere you turn there is something that pushes the boundaries sometimes oversteps. TV, Facebook, Instagram , Tik Tok the music videos.
If people are overstepping the boundary everywhere, how come everyone isn't getting in trouble all the time?

You really sound like you are making my point for me, people can still make jokes, just if you are touching on delicate topics (eg sexual assault or terrorism as has been insinuated in reporting) you would want to make sure you are doing it with nuance and with a point, not just saying the first thing that pops in to your head. And critically know your audience, as Skeptic explained, don't go pushing boundaries unless you know people are on board for it.
As I live in the real world and things aren't black and white I don't get outraged on behalf of others. I defend and look after but I don't act offended on their behalf. I also don't tell people what they should and shouldn't be offended by and I most definitely don't expect young people to make sound and rational decisions all the time.
No-one is telling anyone what to be offended about, they are telling you what offends them. It is up to you to find your own line (which is why I have been asking what everyones line is, still waiting for yours by the way).

You are telling people what they shouldn't be offended by though. That is basically all you are saying. Joking around at a work function should have no limits is the argument you are making right now.

Not just that…

I also can’t fathom a logic whereby the person being offended is to be criticised for being offended or is being too sensitive…
But the person making the offensive comment shouldn’t be as scrutinised/held to account. This is foggy thinking IMO. Especially in the context of the lines being kind of well defined.

So going in the next day and watching the CCTV footage and then complaining is ok?

Seriously think about what’s gone on here.
