I think Kemp is a handy replacement for Battle while Shoey develops. I wouldn't want the Saints to pay more than a 3rd rounder for him

When Jimmy Webster and Dougal Howard were absent from the backline earlier this year, our backline struggled.

Now that we've lost Battle, can you imagine if another experienced defender like Dougal or Jimmy are missing again due to injury?

Cordy played 7 games from Round 2 up until round 8. We lost 5 with him in those early rounds. Not saying it was just him, but I think the 2 guys we really missed were Jimmy Webster and Dougal Howard. Both under rated and both often cop flak on this forum

Cordy is back up only if we are desperate. Similar to how Tom Campbell was used.

Playing Cordy does not improve our team.
Yeah, if the choice is Cordy or Kemp with no cost you take Kemp. But paying a second round pick + whatever else (noting he played over 20 games last season and Carlton aren't actively looking to get rid of him) doesn't necessarily improve us either.

But I said young backs need time too and if the club thinks our young defenders are close, maybe they split time early with Cordy as the back up. Putting Kemp in front of them basically guarantees they don't get a chance without injuries.
We had a guy that just finished 3rd in the B&F walk out the door...There is nobody on our list that can replace him at the moment.
Maybe Caminiti, but if we're letting Membrey and Hayes leave, then that says that he's a long term tall forward.
Unless we are going to get Tomlinson as a DFA from Melbourne, then we need to be having a crack at some key defenders.
All I am saying is look at our strategy with Macrae. Bringing in an old guy for a third round pick, not too get in the way of our young talent but to play a far few games next year and be transitioned out as those guys develop.

If you are writing off guys like McLennan or Keeler or Schoenmaker then sure, pay overs for a young guy from Carlton. If you think they have a shot, they will need opportunity that they will lose with another more mature/developed player in front of them.

I don't disagree the area needs support, I just think Ross is a defensive structure coach and the one place he can cover with an average/developing player is defence. But yeah if the club doesn't rate the kids we have and SOS wants to get back with a past draftee (and if he is as good as that samoht post says) maybe paying the premium is worth it.
What's overs?
Has there been a suggested trade tabled?
We currently have 7, 8, 32, 45, 47
Carlton have 3, 63, 68, 69, 72...Fair to say they might need some picks in between 3 and 63 and might be willing to deal.
Are you expecting to get a 23 year old who played over 20 games and is not being actively shopped around by their club for cheap? I guess they might give him to us for a future 3rd or 4th or something, but I wouldn't say it was likely.

Could do a lot worse than Kemp

More athletic than Battle and is only 23

Good mark, nice speed and skills are solid

Not sure what the knock is

Personally my only issue is the likely cost given he isn't on the outer at Carlton. A side issue is he disputes the development or young backs like Schoenmaker or the academy guy Cole, but if the club rates him higher than those guys that is up to them

I've had a closer look at Kemp and now believe that he'd be worth our Pick 32 - he definitely got better as the year went on, he's only 23, he can play forward when required, he's a good intercept mark, good kick .... sounds a bit like someone that just walked out on the club :D

Carlton reportedly wants a pick in the mid-20s from St Kilda for Brodie Kemp, according to the Herald Sun's Jon Ralph.

The Saints hold Picks 32, 45 and 47, along with selections 7 and 8 that could be used.

How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?

All is OK, was worth a crack if the price was right. 20's definitely not the right price. 32 is borderline.
